We have had our older daughter at the Center for 4 years and her little sister joined her 6 months ago. We have been very happy with our experience there and would highly recommend it. As with most places, the tone is set by the leadership and the Center Director Daniela is excellent. She has created a warm and caring environment while maintaining the level of oversight expected from a Center setting. She and the Assistant Director Laura are organized and responsive, and have good relationships with the families and teachers.
The facilities include a gym area and dedicated art studio. There are lots of age appropriate toys and books everywhere. They provide creative planned crafts and activities, even appropriate for babies. There has been soccer sessions as well as a music teacher who comes to entertain the kids weekly. There are walks for infants when the weather is nice and the older children go to the park down the street and/or walks during the day.
The staff at the Center are responsible and caring. All of the teachers and other staff at the center know them, even those who aren't often in their classrooms. The teachers are often helpful with childcare advice. They are the ones who first alerted me of my oldest teething at 4 months, which is not something we were anticipating so we weren't looking for it. They really led the potty training process which took just less than two weeks. Everyone is well trained such as in CPR, childcare best practices, safety, baby sign language, etc. The center policies match and sometimes exceed AAP and state recommendations.
A note that there is some teacher turnover. This is something you have to get used to in any center setting, especially one in Boston or Cambridge where the teachers are young and the cost of living is high. We have been lucky in having consistency with teachers but I know that some parents have had a hard time with the turnover during their tenure there. I will say that Daniela does a great job with hiring good people and training them. My younger daughter adores her teacher who was new when she started in the classroom and this teacher is wonderful caring for her.
They call you before doing anything unusual, even something non-controversial like putting vaseline I provided on her dry skin, unless you tell them it is not necessary. I would say these calls are fewer and further between as they get older and more independent, but it is nice when they are still infants to hear from the staff on these things. Parents with kids with allergies can be at ease knowing they are very strict about what your child eats and track allergies closely. There is only food/drink you bring under 12 months and then the Center provides snacks as they get older. The schedule is handed out in advance so you can let them know if you don't want something given to your child.
You get great data back. An app provides real time information about your child's naps, bottles, food, drink, diapers in the infant program. The data you receive is less and less the older your child gets but you still receive photos throughout the day and a daily newsletter with pictures and notes on what the kids did in the classroom that day. You also get a physical personal journal about your child with pictures and notes from the teacher. There is also written notification whenever a contagious illness is reported anywhere in the building.
The Center is a great option for working parents. They offer long hours if you need them. They are open 7 AM - 6 PM, and you can sign up for 11 hour days if you need to. And they are almost always open. They are closed on major holidays and a couple minor ones like Patriot's Day for professional development for the staff. Tthe days off have matched our work holiday schedule so my husband and I have never had to take an additional day off to cover Center holidays. There will never be a staff vacation day or sick day when you have to keep your child home. I think they were only closed one day during the horrible winter a few years ago which is kind of close to a miracle.
The location is on Mass. Ave. and within walking distance to the David T stop so very convenient for those commuting in the area. There is a parking lot for those who drive and a bus stop one block down from the Center. It I would encourage anyone to visit the Center for a tour to learn more! read more
