I have attended several universities and colleges. The experience I have had at BYU Idaho online is the worst experience I have ever had. They keep putting me in Institute courses I have already taken. I submit a ticket and they close it without solving the problem. I have 2 friends who are about to graduate who have had endless problems with administration. They add courses, tell them that some courses do not count anymore, refuse to answer questions. A remarkable university. I did not see much of the campus, but met with the facilities and power plant team that maintains the utilities on the campus. Now that was a remarkable tour. The technical knowledge of the staff is remarkable, and Mike was a wonderful host. Only down side to the meeting was when returning to my rental car in the parking lot...I had received a parking ticket for not having a permit to park...bummer, costs me $10 to learn that lesson. read more

I graduated from this school with just an Associate's because I couldn't take being at this school anymore. When I first came here, I absolutely loved the school. The professors were kind, the school felt supportive, and the atmosphere was great. But as the years passed by, the more I learned about everything that made this school less impressive. If you're looking for student employment then good luck unless you're an international student, freshman, or sophomore. They rarely hire anyone who has a knowledge of the school or has experience in a working environment. Just about everything in this school is geared towards students who are new and if you've spent a couple years here then you know just about as much, if not more, than the students working in the offices. You can also just search things on the school website if you have any questions since you can have a quicker and more accurate answer than going to any office anywhere on campus--since the student employees search the same things on the school website anyways but take forever to find it. Some professors don't care about your academic performance and a few will make your classes even harder than they already are. I once had a professor tell the class that they don't care about our grades but that we learn the material, which you get only three retakes total through the school. Any student who works is at a disadvantage because you are given a lot of busy, meaningless homework that count for a majority of your grades so working and going to school means you'll have to sacrifice homework and get lower grades. The biggest con about this school is that it sucks you dry of money over time. If you're not on private insurance, you have to purchase the school's insurance and it's virtually useless and overpriced. Tuition may be cheap but you have to live in BYU-I approved housing, if you're a single student, and that itself can be anywhere from a quarter to three-quarters of tuition for a semester. For those who are married, any housing you find that is less than $800 a month for a 1 bed, 1 bath apartment is a miracle. Overall, this school is nice if your a freshman or plan on transferring to a different school. However, unless you are still covered by your parents' insurance and have no financial worries, be prepared to live here stressed out, working a horrible job and spending more money than you plan because this school seems to always find a way to take your money away from you. read more

I added a course a week into the semester and I went to the byui store to rent a textbook for that new class of mine. I then looked up the textbook later online and found it to be a fair chunk cheaper, so I went back to the BYUI store to return my rental, after only renting it for 2 days and still in the same condition I got it. When I went to return the $80 book though, they wouldn't give any amount of refund for it since it was apparently past the rental date, even though the rental date was earlier than the day I even rented the book. They best they said they could do was take the book back from me. Never renting from them again. They're books cost more than the surrounding competition and they're rental policy is close to a scam. read more

Do not go to this school. Everything is run by students that know less than you in just about everything. Especially when it comes to financial aid, they will just tell you to keep waiting until you get tons of late fees and then when you appeal to have the late fees removed, they will tell you it was your fault even though they kept telling you to "wait". The teachers are a joke. Majority of the teachers are unqualified as teachers or instructors, they are always quick to give excuses for why things are not working or technical difficulties and they expect your understanding, but if the power goes out city wide (which happens 3-5 times per year in Rexburg), or you have an emergency, they tell you "you should have gotten it done earlier". The rules of the campus do not allow you to be an adult in just about any way. You cannot go, do or wear just about anything at any time of the day, and you are constantly judged if you are not just like everyone else on the inside and out. I will be finishing my last semester online because of COVID-19 but all of my issues with the school come from the previous 4 years here. Although it has some good qualities, I will encourage my children to go where they desire but to refrain from enrolling at BYU-Idaho. read more

I received my degree from BYU-Idaho. I loved my time there. Professors: PRO: The professors are dedicated to their students, I still maintain a good relationship with some of them even though it has been a few years since I graduated. CON: Some of the adjunct faculty members are not that great. Rules: PRO: While I'm not a rule-nazi (as others here have put it) I came to appreciate the Honor Code. If it weren't for the Honor Code I wouldn't have done as well as I did in my classes. I was pretty social in college and I'm glad there were boundaries that most people respected. It kept me doing the right things at the right times and helped me to be successful. CON: It's true, if a lot of rules make you uneasy, this may not be the right place for you. Don't go to BYU-Idaho with the intention of only following some of them, it will just cause you and the people you live with stress. Sports: PRO: I LOVE that there is a very robust sports program that (theoretically) all students can participate in. CON: No sports teams that compete with other schools. :( Social: PRO: Because of BYU-Idaho's size and culture, being social is a very easy thing to do! It doesn't take much effort to get out there and make good, solid friends. Many of the friends I made there I will be friends with for life. CON: Rexburg doesn't have much by way of commercial entertainment so students must be and are very creative. Depends on your perspective on whether this is really a con or actually a pro. Obviously, we have people on here who are biased and only saying "This place is awesome!" or "This place sucks!" If you seriously think this place is awful, then it just means you can't handle a school with rules. Here's what I would think most people here think about the school. Great School For the Price Since it's a church school, LDS church members get a great price. The tuition is prorated and then capped at 12 credits, so no matter how many credits you take (i.e. 13 ,16, or even 20 credits) you only pay for 12 credits. Many other universities will make you pay a prorated rate no matter what. Not here. Also, most people here are not bigoted and hating the school. There are programs here that some other schools don't have. My major, for example, Financial Economics, is usually a master's degree and is not offered at the other BYU schools. Rules - The Honor Code Yes, the honor code is much stricter here than at BYU in Provo, but there are great things that come with it. Nobody likes curfew until they realize that being in by midnight means you can actually sleep. It's quiet outside. If you're coming just to party, go to the University of Oregon or even Southern Oregon University, you'll be happier there. It's true that there's a lot of people here that are overzealous about rules. But it's true that there aren't a lot of people who are overzealous about the rules as well. If you're looking for negativity, you'll find it. If you're looking for a great time and an amazing spiritual experience, you'll find it. No matter what you're after, you will find it here. Overall, I hated the school when I first got here. I needed an attitude change. Once I did that, I actually loved it here. Sure, this doesn't mean I have to love small Rexburg, but it meant that I had to just accept the fact that if I was going to be happy here that I had to just follow the rules that I agreed to. BYUi cellular service department is aweful. They are incompetent, unknowledgeable and do not return calls. Jordan, a manager, has promised many times to get back to us about switching our cellular service after a family member died. It has been over three months and still no progress. This place is awesome for pick-up basketball. They do most of the intramural a here though so some days you have to do a lot of waiting. You have to wear BYU-I approved clothing It's free for students, others can buy a day pass for like $6 I think. Tennis, Futsal, Volleyball, Dodgeball are always going down pretty much. They were very rude to me. I asked them for a cup to drink water in, And when I asked them where I might find one they said "I'm sorry, I hope you figure it out" sarcastically, and then beckoned me away. I have never met people in my entire life that are so impersonable and Caustic. I've learned that certain departments of the school are losing money rapidly. I'm so sorry for them. I've worked in hiring for a long time. They seem to hire no people that treat people with respect and humanity and choose adamantly those people that have an "importance" aura about them. The problem is that they don't actually see me as a human or even customer. This is supposed to be an academic institution. But the way they hire people is not in the least way academic or even scientific or systematic for that matter. Every single person that works there seems to have the idea that they are in charge when their boss leaves the room and that the people that associate there are thier employees. Also, often I hear the excuse but "we're a business" Ive been there, and this is absolutely no excuse to use when people give you poor ratings bad ratings or give constructive criticism. This is atrocious behavior, and acknowledgment of it must become mainstream. People should not be treated this way. A five-year-old's response to criticism is blaming other people. I will consider this kind of cop-out in the quotes above as blaming the economy, or even the capitalist system of the country in which it conducts its business. Businesses must receive criticism. And there are constraints in which one can use religion as a means of advertising and gathering customers. There has to be constraints for this. For that matter, you should not use grades as an incentive to promote your own positive reviews given by the students before they receive their grades on "submission" day. Questionable activity for sure. But such a victimhood mentality as blaming the economy and then, because no one wants to go there, accusing people who do not attend of being "unrighteous" is a major, major- usurpation upon people generally. I would not be going into this unless I felt that there was a definite cause-and-effect relationship based on my experience. -**Note that I tried to give a zero rating. I apologize I could not. Great school! I attended both here and in Provo. I'm happy that I went to both, they each have their advantages. BYU-I has a great social environment, the people there really make the school as awesome as it is. It is set in a small town, and the whole campus has that feel. It's easy to make friends, and there is a lot to do! I also feel like BYU-I is more spiritual than BYU. It seems to be more of a focus than in Provo. Provo is a much more intellectual school, but there are a lot of clicks and students seem more concerned with staying up on the latest trends. All in all, I had a great experience at both! read more

The positives: -Affordable, but quality education. -Most of your professors know you by name, and they make time to assist you. -Class sizes are typically small. You get to know your peers and professors very easily. -It's a small campus and easy to get around on foot. -Campus is located in a small town where having a car isn't a must. -Staff and students are very friendly here. -They have a lot of fun activities and shows throughout every semester. -Their health center is decent. -Textbooks are cheap. I never spent over $150. -During the spring semester, the grounds are manicured and very pretty. During the snowy months, walkways are usually plowed promptly. The negatives: -This is the only college I've attended, so maybe they all do this, but food prices here really pick up the slack for your cheap tuition. In other words -- pack a lunch. -Parking here is like parking at a top secret government building. Don't get too close without looking out for signs indicating whether you need a specific permit or not. They will find you and they will get you. Chances are you'll need a permit to park anywhere, so if you want to skip paying for mulitple permits, be prepared to walk. -If you don't like group projects, papers, etc, consider other your other college options. It's a big thing here. -The biggest issue I had with BYU-Idaho: Most of the employees in administration and graduation counseling are students. What this means is, you will get a bunch of different answers from these guys on one question. One person might say you've met the graduation requirements, and one semester later, another will tell you you'll need more courses to meet the requirements. You will hear, "It should have worked" A LOT. Also, a lot of students don't receive their diplomas after graduation, so stay on top of them if you'd like a copy. It took six months before I finally went to the Kimball building myself to get my diploma. They just printed it out right there and handed it to me. Swell. read more

BYU-Idaho is a great place to go to school if you are looking to get a good education at a great price. It's in the Top 15 best small universities of the mid west and has great programs as well as one of the best nursing schools in the country. There are no professional sports teams or college teams in Rexburg, but it offers the student body to participate in intramural softball every kind and even has competitive sports that has try-outs and refs as well. There are a lot of other fun things to do here. read more

I made an appointment with the financial aid office two weeks ago, and they never called me and proceeded to tell me that I had to wait an extra 45 min to talk to someone. This rating is mostly for the English Department. I take online studies, and boy, do they ever give us way too much work and the courses are really messed up with disorganization and some bad links. It took me more than 30 hours per week so far for the homework in the online English course I'm in. That's just one class, folks! I've been taking a lot of courses through online studies and I keep waiting to see if they will be a little more fair about the amount of work that is required. Someone needs to realize that when the hours it takes to do an assignment are estimated, that it is not at all what they are saying on the assignment list. I did some assignments today that were unbelievable in the amount of work and then I checked the approximate time that was stated in the assignment, that it should take to complete it. One of the assignments in a quiz said "10 minutes." It took me over one hour. Another one said "20 minutes." It took me over 2 hours and 15 minutes. It's like that with almost everything that is assigned! The reading is way too much, too. They could assign 1/3 of the reading that is required and we would still get the information we need. Hasn't anyone heard that schools are starting to find out that students who get overworked are doing worse than those that are not given a large amount of work to do? You really need to pay attention to this, BYUI, because everyone I know is complaining so much about it! Lots of students I know, just have to keep dropping most of their online courses. That defeats the goal of the school, doesn't it, if they keep losing attendance, money and reputation? I am an "A" student. I have to work at least 3 times as hard to keep my GPA. I won't get through very quickly though, because, how can I take a full load (14 credits for financial aid), if my courses take 30 hours a week each? With 5 three-credit courses, that would mean that I need 150 hours of homework a week! Are you really serious? That would mean no sleep and no eating. I would have to die I guess, in trying. I will say that the spiritual experience here is superior, and I will always appreciate it. However, for my academic studies, something has to give. read more

For a school that preaches the need to "follow the savior", they will sure try their best to screw you out of your money. They lost my scholarship and then charged me a $100 late fee on tuition. They advertising office refuses to let you know the rules for advertising on campus, but they will definitely get after you if you don't follow them. How can I follow them if I can't see them? Oh and then they'll charge you a late fee on tuition if their internship wasn't approved until after the semester started. How can I pay tuition if there wasn't a charge in the first place? For the most part, the education was pretty poor. They like to talk about the fact that their professors were in industry, but what they won't tell you is that it's been 10+ years since they've worked in industry and that a lot of what they're teaching you isn't relevant anymore. Overall, I am reminded about a promise given by an apostle, who I believe was Elder Bednar, that said something along the lines of "if the spirit of worldly knowledge (meaning people think they're smarter then the Lord) ever entered into the school, then dead would be the days of the spirit of Rick's and the school would begin to fall." That wasn't put exactly the right way, but that's pretty much what was said. The spirit of knowledge has definitely entered into the school, both from students and the school itself. read more

Great education for the cost (if you are LDS). The quality of education that you receive from BYU-Idaho is amazing for the price that you pay. If you plan on transferring schools then make sure you get your Associates degree before leaving, or else your credits won't transfer at all. They have developed course work that is named different things so other colleges (even BYU Provo) won't accept the credit. Wonderful campus, friendly people, and amazing professors. If you are planning on going to school here and possibly transferring make sure you stay for the 2 years and get your associates degree. I would highly recommend attending BYU-Idaho. read more
