I was asked to come speak…read moreand direct a workshop panel as an Industry guest via my intern at the time, who also happened to work as a receptionist at the Anthony Meindl workshop. The honorarium I received for teaching, was instead sent to their own employee, my intern at the time, who pocketed the money. When I informed the school of this, they said "sorry, you should talk to (intern name here) we don't know what agreement you had with him." So I am to believe they think it's perfectly fine, to pay one of their employees (who is an intern) rather than pay the industry guest they invited who taught. But of course the intern who also works at the studio is entitled to the money, and the guest speaker doesn't get paid, and then gets ignored. SHADY. UNPROFESSIONAL and just gross.

I had never performed in my life. In fact, I had terrible stage fright and social anxiety. On a…read morelark, I did a standup workshop and performance, it was a lot of fun. I was buzzing for days afterward, I wanted to learn more. I googled comedy classes and the American Comedy Institute popped up. I discovered the one year program and saw the cost, it was slightly out of my budget, but I applied and I got a small scholarship. I packed up and moved across the country. I stayed with family, which meant a 3 hour round trip just to get to classes 4 nights a week. I met incredible people, I had a lot of fun. But most of all, I learned a lot about comedy and myself, from learning how to be more comfortable in my body and working in an ensemble in improv class. To collaborating in sketch comedy class, to writing solid jokes and performing them in New York City, it was a great life experience for me. The director of the school, Stephen Rosenfield, has a knack for really helping me understand and develop comedically. The most important thing he taught me was to tend my own fire. The truth is there are better places that are all about getting you the necessary experience than ACI. 1. Does ACI have open mic affiliations? No, because they want you to stay at their bi-monthly gig at Broadway Comedy Club. They should be on top of all - yes, ALL - the open mics, clubs and producers. 2. You need to know the difference between 'practice makes perfect' and 'practice, practice, practice'!!!!! They're not encouraging their students to hit open mics or showcases, and for evidence I simply site the total absence of ACI students at shows I attend. 3. Their Broadway Comedy Club has both a cover AND a minimum. You can attend, meaning perform, at better clubs where there is no minimum but just a slightly ($20) cover. You ALWAYS spend more at Broadway, which has to be among NYC's worst clubs. Proof? Try The Stand on Third Ave, b/w 19-20. I've performed there. Not only are the comics better than ACI, The Stand has a full restaurant AND a full bar. Every club that I have ever seen offers videos of your gig for a nominal fee. Last I checked, ACI did the same but they MAILED YOU A GODDAMN DVD!!!! So, if you want to give standup a shot, do this: 1. Get a notebook. Small one. 2. Lookup 'BadSlava.com. This is a website listing EVERY SINGLE OPEN MIC in the city. 3. Go to an open mic. Your first FIVE assignments are to JUST GO and WATCH. Just WATCH. 80% watching. 10% listening. And 10% questioning. You're NOT PERFORMING. You're observing. Getting a feel. Eventually go to Laughing Buddha. Google them. They have close to 20 open mics a week. Just go and show support. I think it's $5 plus you buy a drink. Then you'll be 'ready' yourself. And in a MUCH better position to ask if you need to drop over $400 on a 'class' in comedy. As for another reviewer's claim that world famous comics return to write with Stephen, I only say, "Buyer, beware, and don't take everything you read at face value! The truth can be quite shocking." Trust me: I have been shocked.

My son has been with ATNY since he was four years old, in the Tots class. He is thirteen now. I was moved to write today because my son is taking a week long "camp" this week at an ATNY satellite location, HeART in Motion, in Ridgewood. It's a Broadway music, singing and choreography themed camp and it's somewhat out of my son's comfort zone. He was a little nervous about it because while he is a musician and singer-songwriter, he's been having trouble navigating the puberty voice change. He's also been in plays like Annie (as Rooster), Aladdin in Aladdin, Mr Wormwood in Matilda and Sir Dennis Galahad in Spam A Lot, he isn't necessarily a "Broadway kid". He doesn't have a Broadway style voice. He's more Shawn Mendes than Ben Platt. I didn't know what this week was going to be like for him, especially because, honestly, the kind of talent ATNY pulls is extraordinary, especially in the Broadway genre. I've heard kids sing at ATNY cabaret nights that I can't believe are kids and that they aren't already on Broadway. My son brings something different at these cabaret shows, which is awesome, but to sing Broadway is not his forte or his go-to. However, he does want to learn. He wants to grow and get better. Carl Anthony Tramon is teaching this week's camp. He is amazing. He's a great teacher, who knows how to keep them on-track, doesn't let them take the easy way out, and challenges them to take on songs they didn't know they had the chops to sing. The kids LOVE him. He really knows how to make a personal connection with them, but still have their respect as a teacher. My son came home from the first day loving it. I listened for about forty-five minutes today when he was giving them each their song. He gave my son something that is going to be challenging, a little difficult, but if he can nail it, it will be a performance that will really boost his confidence. It stretches him as a singer, an artist, and performer in general to take this song on and make it his own. I'm so happy I signed him up for this. He wasn't fully on board at first because it's the week before school when his schedule will be rigorous. But he had a great time yesterday and I can tell it was a great class today too. I can't wait to see the culmination of what this week has taught them all. I love ATNY and the skills they give to kids. Whether your child wants to be on tv, Broadway, sing, dance, act, or if they're just doing it for fun, you know it's money well spent. You know Todd Etelson and the rest of his staff really care about the kids, want them to challenge themselves and to succeed. You're never just a number or a dollar sign to them. I would encourage any parent to give ATNY a shot if your child is interested in doing anything performance related.

However, I was more than pleasantly surprised by AP Voices - they provided a wonderful experience. They were timely with scheduling my class and the class itself was kept small (approx 8 people). The leaders, Frank and Ellie were charming and knowledgeable. Each person in the class got to record a demo and was given improvement tips by Ellie and Frank. The next day, they sent me an email with my demo sample and information on voice over lessons & demo packages. The packages are a bit pricey but I might consider taking them up on their offer. It's a fun time!
