Let me start off by saying that I had made monetary donations as well as food and blankets for animals in the past, but alas, no more. Unfortunately, I had a elderly friend who was in her 90s and had wound up with a feral cat colony that she was trying to feed and take care of on a fixed income. People were dumping cats at her home and she would take them get them fixed and feed them. something happened to one of the cats which was very friendly. He loved to be petted and had an issue with its back and it could hardly walk. I called them and asked them if I could bring the cat in and they could do an x-ray and see what was wrong with the cat because the cat was obviously in incredible pain and falling down. I explained my 90 year old friend was on a fixed income as was I and the cat needed help. They told me I could bring the cat into their clinic but an office visit , X-ray, and rabies shot would be a minimum of $250.00 or more . I explained again it was a cat from a colony and no one owned it. And I couldn't afford it. I asked if I could surrender the cat to get it help and was told they didn't take feral cats! Well there was a rescue in Suntree that took the poor cat and said its spine was broken in 4 places and he was in severe pain and didn't charge me. The animals welfare was the most important thing to the rescue in Suntree. I thought the humane society was supposed to rescue and help sick and injured animals? This one refused to help. I learned my lesson not to donate to them. What a farce. read more

Several years back, I found my Roxy at BHS on Cox Rd. She was mostly a Min Pin and we bonded quickly although she was 8 yrs old and left there as she couldn't produce any more pups. They were very transparent as to the health issues of the dogs I met which was very appreciated. So sad but she had a great life with me until cancer over took her even after 2 operations several years later. She and I visited the facility each Christmas Season to donate Lots of beds or treats for the dogs and cats. I tooks her their to their Chapel when I had to say goodbye and everyone was so kind and gentle with her. The people there are just great and I would recommend them to anyone. read more

This place is a JOKE! Do NOT save a couple bucks to take your pets here. Go to a REAL veterinarian! The vet looked in my dogs ear and said "yeah it looks really bad" but we can't do anything today. Come back in 3-4 weeks and they could help... so pay for another visit and tests, and let the dog suffer for a month!? This is unethical and gross. read more

I adopted Tofu AKA Sophia Bella from this shelter 3/6/2021. Sophia has been my emotional support cat for 6 years. Sophia weighed 8 lbs at time of adoption however she weighs a healthy 11lbs currently. Everyone adores Sophia purring, loving and beautiful eyes. read more

The worst experience of my life with family pets. The business model to get animals donated, market them, fix them tag them, and track for life is not a business model that shows the animals' best interests. It's greed control driven and honestly sickening. I didn't even know they existed until a friend made a mess by adopting without knowing if she could care for a puppy. She is clearly an irresponsible 23 year old with an infant, and they still adopted her a hound mix on the spot (some "vetting" they did). The girl, who in no way should've been allowed to adopt an animal, changed her mind and stupidly called the county to pick him up. I was able to step in and adopt him for my family after he was returned. I have an 11 yr old dog that wanted nothing to dog with the pup, but he loved to play with other dogs so we thought another pup to grow with would be good for him. We went back, they had 2 boxer mix brothers. Beautiful dogs and beautiful personalities from what we could see from the window. I paid 10 each dog so we could have a priority adopter tag, but this doesn't go toward the adoption fee. They already met my family with the hound mix so they waived them being at the meet and greet, which is irrelevant anyway bc there isn't much you can tell about a dog from meeting them in a park. My husband and I met the dogs and were indecisive. They were pushy and said we have to agree then or we lose the priority. First, I took one and then came back for the other after talking with my husband. The process was really quick I was very excited as well and didn't read through everything, which the lady was aware of bc I signed in seconds. No highlighted areas, no pointing out that I am marrying the shelter for the next 10-12 years. Just paid the 150 ea. dog, congrats, flip the card and take care. We got them home, bathed them bc they had dried stool all over them and set them up with crates and started our life with them. The next day, one of the brothers was very aggressive toward my old dog whenever he saw her. His behavior displays abused pup. He is extremely submissive to people and aggressive to dogs. So we were thinking that if we can't correct it, bc sometimes you can't, depending on what happened to them... that we would rehome just that guy. I posted 1 post on a rehoming fb group to see if folks would be interested just incase, with no intent yet bc we were just getting started. The shelter posed as a potential buyer then called and left multiple messages that they had proof that I was trying to sell the dogs and they were coming to my house with police to reclaim them. Needless to say, I was confused. The lady was yelling at me on the phone and asking me why would I do that, I explained, but she didn't like my answer and insisted on arguing with me. We waited for them and police to show up, just to tell them I didn't do anything wrong and to go away. The contract binds you to them for the life of the dog. They kept saying "bring us back our dogs" and per their contract (which should be illegal) they hold all the rights to the animal without any liability. We don't adopt animals from them we just care for them at our homes while holding all of the financial and legal responsibilities for them without rights to them and they get to reclaim them whenever they want based on how they feel. However much I understand they deal with the general public and they have to be careful, they aren't being careful. They are being negligent by adopting to anyone with an ID, controlling through a tracking chip (although they ask if you want them chipped on the way out as if they're not already) and then flex the law while it is not even a criminal offense to rehome an animal. I called everywhere and asked everyone. No one challenges them, so they get away with this behavior of selling animals and reclaiming them to sell again if you breach the contract and they find out. There is no trial period or even partial refund. They are theives. Please don't give them your animals or adopt from them. All 3 of the puppies came with respiratory infections, malnourished and filthy. Not to mention, the facility is understaffed (so says the staff), and its so smelly in there, it burns your eyes. The dogs are visibly stressed, have stool in the holding cells, a cot to sleep on (meanwhile, people donate beds). It's not a place you want to bring your animal to or one back to. I beg someone with the time and money to challenge them in court. They need a revision, largely. Or maybe they need a different director. All the people I know after this incident will no longer deal with them. read more

I have had to take 2 of my dogs to end their lives because of there loss of health and I took both of them to paws chapel both times they were their for me and my dogs. They were treated with kindness and respect, compassion from the people who worked there. It's such a blessing that they have people who care for them at their end of life with respect. read more

I found a stray kitten, took it to the shelter, the attendant told me he looks sick, we can't take him. I guess it's my responsibility to find someone who can help this kitten. A couple months back my son found a dog, took her there was told she is too big, drive to Melbourne to the county shelter. I do rescue and run a rescue based in PA. I'm just surprised that this shelter can pick which animals to help. read more

Five years ago I adopted a Shih Tzu from this shelter, he was so perfect for me, I called today to see if they had another. My husband and I went to surrender our family dog of 10 plus years at the Humane Society on Cox Road in Cocoa. The staff member that we dealt with asked me a question and before I had time to answer because I was engaged with my dog and quite overwhelmed with even having to do this, began speaking condescendingly towards me. When I asked her not to speak to me that way, she became incensed, accusatory, and would not cease interrupting me whenever I attempted to answer questions. At that point a person who my husband and I now know is a "volunteer" began yelling comments against us over the women's shoulders. Although the women kept telling the volunteer to stop, the volunteer continued. The women also continued being condescending towards us. Although I was not yelling, yet simply requiring to be dealt with in a respectful manner, someone not in the conversation said "We're not taking the dog!". When I stated I would leave her as that was the prearranged agreement, the women and the intake person threatened to call animal authorities and claim that my husband and I had abandoned our dog. We left with our dog of 10 plus years, not because we were afraid of the lie they would tell the authorities, but because we were concerned for the safety and well-being of our dog. After their unprofessional, insensitive, behavior, my husband and I had zero confidence that they would actually care well for our dog of 10 plus years. As a Christian, I know their reward is coming. I would never recommend anyone take their animal there. Surrendering a family fur member after 10 plus years is extremely difficult to decide to do. Instead of them being truly understanding, they were insanely insensitive and immensely disrespectful. The women said the encounter was on video. I told her I was glad because whoever watches will see her behavior. At the end of the encounter, this women was yelling and when I called her on it, she said, yes, because she's upset. Well, she upset herself because there was no yelling, or condescending action on my part. There was however, a black women who will not be spoken to like she is less and I think that is truly what these people had the biggest problem with. read more

Dirty, smells horrible, rude staff, no cars in the parking lot, animals look sick, the ones we were allowed to see. I feel terrible for the animals here, the staff acts like prison guards, making it difficult for nice people to adopt. The board members need to visit the Cox Road Shelter to see what they actually are endorsing. Then go to the SPCA in Titusville and see the differences. read more

No wonder so many dogs are available. Went there today to adopt a dog. We have 25 acres and a very nice, expensive large kennel and run outside, 6 x 70'. Our vet even visits our home to take care of our dogs and is fine with their living conditions. We were told we are not eligible for a dog because all the human society dogs have to be kept inside after adoption. That is a hard rule they dont tell you about before you start looking. Even if the dog is returned to the shelter because it is too hyper or it rips up furniture. Several of the dogs had been returned to this kennel for just for that reason. It is ok for the Humane Society to keep them in totally cramped cages with what feels like no AC inside but it is not ok for you to keep them in a large kennel and run. What hypocrites. No wonder so many dogs get put down each year. This is animal abuse. read more

Wouldn't even give them a star if I could.. Their clinic is the most distasteful animal clinic I've ever been to! My dogs vet was closed for the day so I took her here for them to check her skin because she had blisters, scabs, bleeding, hair loss, red, and itchy all over her belly and chest. My husband took her in and within 5 minutes he called me and said "they charged us $57 for a steroid shot to stop the itching and recommended flea medicine, the vet didn't even look at her." Our dog DOES NOT have fleas. She gets a flea soak every bath along with her oatmeal soak. Not only that she has been on heart worm+flea medicine all in one. So I call and explained all this to them and told the lady that he didn't look at the dog and I believed she was misdiagnosed. She then proceeded to argue with me, didn't even let me talk, was disrespectful and rude and ended the conversation(if you would even call it that) by saying "well you can take your dog elsewhere because we don't care, have a good day lady." EXACT WORDS. Well I made an appointment with her vet for the next day and they were furious and confused as to why they would even give her a shot of steroid and her rabbies shot if she was sick to begin with. Anyway, turns out that my fur baby had fuliculitis AND NO FLEAS! And they said that if the vet would've looked at our dog then he would've known this! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME COMING TO THIS CLINIC! They are rude, inconsiderate, and down right abusive. Now with that being said- the adoption part of the place is great! read more

The 2x I've been there I had no issues. They have volunteers that work their and seem to do their best. It is a no kill shelter. I saw they were to background checks on perspective owners. Others were out spending time with the sheltered animals. Savannah M., no decent HS is going to give you an animal in 2 minutes. I want to thank the humane society for allowing me to adopt my dog Krissie 13 years ago tomorrow. I lost my service dog Shadow on November 27, 2005. She had bladder cancer. I was upset and my friends said go to humane society on Cox Road and see what they have and get another dog. So I did and fell in love with a puppy. We went to puppy school at Florida Aid To Animals in Melbourne. Then we did some more training for her to be a service dog. She has been with me since she was 8 weeks old and she is still going strong. That is the best place to adopt a pet. read more

I've adopted here, donated here, taken pets to the vet and brought in abandoned cats. I've never had a chance to judge anything but their loving and caring when handling their guest animals. CBHS gets major points with me for being a non-kill shelter, for conserving their resources intelligently, and for actually vetting the people who want to adopt. My last dozen cats have been either shelter cats or 'road rescues' (finding an injured cat near the street). CritterSavers.org is the first and only shelter that actually verified I deserved one of their cats AND that my other cats were not infected or diseased. This bunch actually cares. It is not a 'mill' of any kind and I routinely support their efforts with what donations I can afford. read more

We were "adopted" by a stray cat after Irma. She was declawed and defenseless, so despite my wife's extreme allergy to cat hair, we borrowed a pet carrier and brought the cat in for the night. This morning my wife took the cat to this so called shelter, and they would not accept the animal and would not provide assistance on where she could take it. Lazy good for nothing staff. read more

I am lucky to live here in Cocoa where the Central Brevard Humane Society is. I have brought feral cats to be spayed or neutered for a very reasonable price. The dedicated, experienced and knowledgeable staff in the clinic are wonderful. They really care. I also adopted my dog from here. I only have rave reviews for all involved. My brother and I want to find a dog for each of us and found the perfect ones even though one worker/volunteer tries to convince me that the pit bull they'd been desperately trying to find a home for for the past 8 months (he was 1 year old when at the time) was not what I was looking for and when I insisted she told me she'd have to find someone else to get him because she didn't want to deal with his pulling. Then they found out we had another dog who was just due for her shots and said we couldn't adopt any dogs until she got them (understandable) and told my 11-year-old brother if he wanted the puppy he found we'd better get our dog her shots and get back there before someone else took the puppy. We even tried offering a down payment to reserve her for 24 hours. They acted like they didn't actually want the animals adopted! We eventually got both dogs and tried to keep taking them to their clinic but the vet was completely incompetent! I'd rather go to a kill shelter and save an animal's life than deal with people who are content letting the dogs live in a cage all their lives. read more

I understand it is a non profit org and thats great and their clinic has great prices too on care, vaccines and meds. On the other hand, they are very disorganized. they constantly cant find your pets records, staff does not communicate with each other very well and they ALWAYS could not find my dogs rabies shot records so they always want to give my dog another rabies shot! If your pet needs a refill, you better be ready to wait a week before it happens. they were giving my pet an allergy shot every 6 months, when I called to make her next appointment, I was told i needed to go some where else, ohhh and they also asked, again, for her rabies certificate! Its too much of a hassle when your pet is your child. I have been other Humane societies that have their ish together!!! read more
