Their vegan beetroot cake was moist and wonderful, and had me searching the internet in vain for a recipe to try to replicate it. I should really just buy it from Sugar Down and not bother trying! My fiancé's favorite is the Crack Pie. I honestly don't know what's in it besides sugary buttery goodness as he ate it all yesterday, so didn't get a taste! But he's had it twice now and loves it. We also got a wonderful peanut butter brownie which was chocolatey rich and had a big yummy swirl of peanut butter running throughout. Fantastic place to get a quick, cheap treat. A million times better than something you could buy at the grocery store, so don't even bother - just come here!

What has prompted this review is their mouth watering and delicious rhubarb and custard macaroons that I only discovered last week.....so good that they drew me back every day without fail! If you're a newbie to the French Oven it can be difficult to peruse their selection as it does get pretty busy along the counter but the staff are always more than happy to help and the queue is a reflection of the high quality and fresh food on offer. They also deliver if you want time to consider your order online or buy in bulk. I would highly recommend their macaroons as they are by far the best I've tasted outside of Paris itself! I also tend to favour the sourdough bread or focaccia - so flavoursome and light. Although not a frequent pasty fiend I have sampled their chilli con carne pasty when I was looking for convenience food and it was very tasty although perhaps could have had a bit more filling. Nonetheless I have yet to be disappointed by anything from this little treasure of a bakery.

As you would really, it being a bread shop :-) Anyway, the lady behind the counter was very helpful, and described the bread that was on the back shelves, and I selected a mixed grain. Sitting infont of her on the counter was an interesting dark brown round loaf, with some bright pink bits showing through. She said it was Prawn and something!!! I nearly choked! She said "It's been really popular today and this is the only one left!" I decided I may need to gird my loins a bit more before delving into the dark art of baking to that extreme. I asked if she had a list of the bread they do, and she handed me a Qype card! Whoo hoo for promoting Qype! Not so hot on getting me more info on produce sadly. Maybe a blackboard somewhere with "FreshToday" written on it and a list of bread and cakes available as well as the specials of the day would be very useful I feel. The bread was lovely!

To maximise the tasting experience, we decided to share a slice of lime and ginger cake and a popcorn rocky road. Hand on heart, the ultra sweet, gooey rocky road rendered us virtually speechless - we couldn't stop sighing and exclaiming, "mmmmm". That's all there is to it. Order one. The cake was fine, but I found the icing very sickly, so I'm glad we shared it. Plenty of upstairs seating for a large group. The sandwiches were sloppy. There's more range now but the sizes of the products have decreased. The staff just wanted your money and for you to leave asap. My tuna crunch missed on the crunch and had a change of recipe. The prices are so high now that I don't think it's even worthwhile especially when there are so many other food choices on the same street that are similar and cheaper.

The shop is always heaving, particularly at lunch-time, but they have set up the check-out system so that you never seem to wait longer than a few mionutes, even when the queue is round the shop and out of the door into the street (that's a lot of people). The selection of sandwiches is massive, much bigger than any other ones in the City. You are always assured of getting the freshest baked products too as the turn-around is so big. Who can say no to the buns and cakes? It's simple, clean and not too pricey. The quality and taste is ok, best that I've had so far in the city.
