I explained to them how much sentimental value my ring held, but they were adamant that a repair was not possible. So, I decided to get a second opinion and visited Smith Jewellers, also in Glasgow. I was delighted when Karen told me that my ring could, in fact, be repaired. She explained that the claws in the cluster simply needed to be strengthened to secure the setting. The work was completed within two weeks, and at a fraction of the cost quoted by the first jeweller. Karen and her husband at Smith Jewellers are such a friendly couple; very approachable people who genuinely care about their work. And, if you're a dog lover, you'll be greeted by their two adorable dogs in the workshop, who make you feel even more welcome! I was so impressed with the service that I also entrusted Smith Jewellers with my late mother's engagement ring. As it was too large for me, I had never worn it, but within two weeks it had perfectly been resized. Once I collected the ring, it looked brand new and beautifully sparkling. Now, I can wear my mum's engagement ring every day; it feels like I have a little piece of her with me, wherever I go. It's rather dirty, there's a rickety old lift with the pull over metal bars and the whole place smells of very strong disinfectant. If you are a little put off by the lift then don't worry as there is a friendly man who works in the lift opening and closing the doors and helping customers find what they are looking for. Smiths is on the third floor and as I said, when you enter it isn't glamorous but do not let that put you off as the people working here are experts at their trade. I used to work in a jewellers and whenever our workshop was full - the rest was sent to Smiths. Many Jewellers in the city centre use Smiths and I have seen Links of London staff here many a time when I have popped in. I also get my own personal jewellery sized and repaired here. They've sized a few rings for me and also taken links out of bracelets, ring sizing is never more than £10 for silver and if you need something quick smart they can generally sort something out for you. Smiths has been in the business for years and even though it's not shiny and sparkly, chances are if you've had something sized from a jewellers in Glasgow they'll have sent it here to save them waiting to get it sized in their own workshops if they're too busy.

Pushy, obsessive girlfriends drag sweating, shifty-eyed boyfriends around here and coo in an innocent-but-underlyingly-persuasive manner at gigantic engagement rings. You can find everything in here, from traditional gold and antiques, to modern gems by contemporary designers. The walls and ceiling sparkle with the reflected light of a million facets - most people can only afford to browse. Wandering around here is an enjoyable way to spend half an hour. Deciding what you would buy if you found £10,000 or even £100,000 just lying in the street (Ha!). One end of the arcade emerges on Buchanan Street, the other on Argyll Street, so it is a nice alternative link between the two streets, especially if it is raining.

This includes simple silver pieces, sparkling diamante kiddie pieces (usually earrings in the shape of various animals) as well as top end platinum and diamond wedding rings. As if this wasn't enough, they also have a good range of quality clocks, watches and various small gifts (such as the teddy bears mentioned by Eleanor). Out of these sideline ranges, I've only actually purchased a few watches but these were great buys that lasted well past their due date. Impressive in itself, but especially so because of the great prices you get here. Obviously for the high end products and merchandise you will pay more but generally the prices in here are excellent. Thus enable even a lowly student such as myself to purchase some lovely pieces for gifts, or a treat for myself. To top this all off, I've found the staff in this particular branch of H Samuel to be especially great. It's quite close to the Buchanan Street entrance, and its frontage is painted a luxurious deep green - so it's not easy to miss. Unlike the more contemporary jewellery shops in the arcade that boast minimalist diamond displays - the windows of this jewellers are absolutely stuffed full of jewels of every type. Of course, rings (particulalry of the engagement variety) take up a lot of the space, but you'll also find bracelets, earrings and necklaces of every variety. Although some of the pieces at Mr Harold & Son are hideously expensive (think £80,000+) they also have some much more affordable pieces that don't skimp on quality or style. The main reason that I love this jewellers so much is that it stocks much more original pieces than modern jewellers. Whether you're looking for a massive emerald or a more modest ruby - you'll find it, and in any particular setting that you fancy. Now, who says you have to be engaged to look at engagement rings?!

I was in there today and got myself a wee pair of star earrings (9ct gold!!) for £13-bargain! As I say, NOT fancy schmancy baubles, but good value everyday jewellery! In the past I have bought wee charms to go on my Thomas Sabo charm bracelet...they were only ever about £8 each! I would deffo recommend this store for wee bits and shinies of all sorts! I received a beautiful necklace for my birthday from my boyfriend this year that I fell in love…read morewith the minute I opened it - unique yet simple with a beautiful tourquoise stone (my fave colour). It was perfectly me. The little purple box told me that it was from Bethsy Gray Silver Jewellery. I had never heard of it or been in before but, as a huge fan of silver jewellery, I was certainly going to seek it out. My boyfriend encouraged me telling me that Bethsy herself made the jewellery on site and helped him pick the perfect necklace for me. Wow, impressive. I popped in later with a friend and discovered it was even more delightful than I imagined. The jewellery is displayed within vintage store Starry Starry Night where Bethsy was working away in her workshop. She popped her head out with a welcoming and friendly smile asking if we needed a hand and happily left us to browse. The jewellery is made of sterling silver and semi-precious stones and comes in all beautiful shapes and designs. There are bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings, cufflinks and even tiaras and if you don't find what you're looking for you can commission Bethsy to produce your perfect little piece. I love it and now adore my necklace even more having seen where it was carefully created.
