I've been using Ashe Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Services since having a mild brain stem…read morestroke on March 14. I started going after spending a week in the Encompass Stroke Facility in Winston-Salem. It is now mid-June and I am winding down therapy services. I needed Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. I started going three times a week while on a walker or a Rollator (the walker with four wheels and a seat). Now. three months later, I am walking on my own, and driving. I no longer need the Rollator; we use it to transfer groceries from the car to the house. The therapists at Ashe Memorial were always helpful, patient, and encouraging. I had dealings with Seth, who did my initial evaluation, Emily and Hannah for speech, a student intern for speech under the direction of Hannah, Tamara for occupational, Eric, Bill and Dustin for physical therapy. All contributed to my recovery. After seeing them several times, we developed relationships where they were genuinely concerned about my recovery, and encouraging me to continue working at home....which I do and will continue to do. If they had advice for anyone it would be that therapy is not just when you go into their gym for an hour for a few times a week. THAT time is just to show you what you can do at home. You don't necessarily need a recumbent bike at home (which they have several). What they show you is to how to use plastic bands for strength training, how you can practice balance routines on your own, how just walking and standing is part of self-therapy. Just about everything they have in the gym, one can duplicate at home at little cost. That's what therapy is all about; teaching you to continue on with exercises that will bring you back to "normal." I'm told it may be a year before I am back to"normal" with strength, stamina, and balance being the key factors for me to recover. They even encourage you to sleep and nap as therapy (for stroke victims, anyway)! What great people- encouraging you to nap.
