There is now improved parking in the back fields and nighttime security. In addition to concessions, there are more vendors selling snacks during larger events. The parks are free and accessable year round. There are tennis courts and a play area for smaller children in the front park. Next to them is a covered picnic area and basketball courts. There are larger swingsets for big kids and more covered pavilions in the back park.

ATT has an office building on the plantation grounds. Fleming Island High and Thunderbolt Elementary are also on the grounds, and are two highly rated Clay county schools. A few other businesses are on the grounds of the plantation, like Island Life Grille, but most places are just north in the shopping area of 220. Fleming Island Cinema 12 (Carmike) is an immediate neighbor. The staff at the clubhouse are very courteous and helpful for any of your needs. The organizers send out a monthly "Living in Fleming Island Plantation" paper that includes the events calendar and highlights local businesses. Throughout the year there are mini parades for kids to get involved in and community get togethers at the splash park or club house. Two pools are on the grounds, one with a lap pool and one with a water slide. There are tennis courts, basketball courts, picnic pavilions and a play ground by the club house. There is a large green space behind the splash park, but no pets or bikes/scooters/blades are allowed on the space or the sidewalk so I'm not quite sure why this space exists. Perhaps for ultimate frisbee games... The CDD is just that, a CDD. There is a hefty CDD fee annually in addition to a small HOA depending on which subdivision you live in. The CDD puts those dollars to work though keeping the landscaping clean and up to date. The place is beautiful, though I do need to contact those in charge about a very rough road outside our division. If you want to be involved, you can run for a position on the CDD board. All in all this is a great place to live with ample amenities to suit just about everyone's needs. A bubble in the universe - you really never have to leave if you don't want to!

We just hiked Moonshine Creek today because it was pretty wet on Creek Sink after the rain. We then did a tiny taste of Spring Grove across the street before driving around to the other addresses associated with the park to try and find the Ranger station. After receiving a Junior Ranger packer at Devil's Millhopper State Park awhile back, my son was excited to bring along his passport to get it stamped at San Felasco. Unfortunately we could not find a Ranger or ranger station on our visit today. Nevertheless, we had a beautiful little hike, worked on Junior Ranger activities, and had fun exploring a State Park that was new to us! The trails stretch through the southern portion and then the vast northern portion and these hiking trails can be accessed from the Millhopper Road trailhead while mountain biking and horseback trails can be accessed from a trailhead further north near Alachua. Note that horses and mountain bikes are not allowed on the trails from the Millhopper Road trailhead, though. Horses must carry proof of a negative Coggins test and otherwise be good horses, of course. Although archeological studies indicate there were Native American and early Spanish settlements and roads through this area, you don't really see any evidence of human intervention historical or otherwise here aside from the parking area and the trails (and service roads) as the State Parks have done a great job of keeping this a preserve for animals and as rustic as possible. You are not allowed to camp here, either, so it's really a matter of humans exploring during the day a haven for wildlife. I have seen deer, wild hogs, snakes, tortoises, many birds, lizards and other animals here and you're almost certain to see deer or a tortoise if you hike for more than an hour and spread out a little. Dogs on leashes are allowed on the hiking trails, but please remember to bring some water for your dog. The trails off Millhopper Road on the north side are vast and not well-shaded in places. Dogs have died from heatstroke out there, according to the Park Service. Also, check for ticks because they are legion in their numbers here.

I also like that the town took a misfortune and turned it into a positive, giving a place for the community to come and enjoy a moment's respite from everyday life. It could offer a bit more, but they are working with what they got. This was a cool think to stumble across. I don't see much need to come back the next time that I am passing through town, but I am glad that I saw it.
