I was visiting a friend and we went to Boylan Heights for dinner on a Friday night. Everyone customized their burgers and they came out delicious, the only thing I would have liked to add was how well the burger was cooked but the chefs did a good job. Curly fries with cheese were also delicious. The Wahoo house drink was recommended to us and it did not disappoint! I went here for a student event last weekend, and I loved the place! I'm tossing out the extra fifth star on account of the stellar service at Boylan, despite being jam packed on a Friday night. I really like Boylan Heights. Their burgers of the month (BOMB) are usually pretty good, and their regular features are also stellar. The sides are all delicious. To top it off, they usually have a great selection of beer, and great TV's to watch sports. When I was living in Charlottesville, my roommate and I used to stop in at least once a month. Boylan is a great place to get burgers and beer- especially on a beautiful afternoon! I would recommend Boylan if you're looking for a casual place to have lunch. It's also a great place to grab a bite to eat or a drink while watching the game. It's a college bar, so it's pretty reasonably priced. That being said, the food is as gourmet as a college sports bar could get! The service is great and the kitchen is fast. 3 stars because my meal was alittle skimpy. However its good atmosphere for a college bar and has shuffle board/luge tables. Known as more of a jock hangout it can get alittle loud. The menu of burgers and build your own burgers is very enticing and would def recommend going that route. Beer selection is kinda weak too, but lower standards are expected when traveling. read more

First and foremost, this is a burger place and the burger I had was good, with creative and fresh toppings. They also have plenty of topping options (you can design your own) and have turkey, veggie, vegan, etc. options. However, the sweet potato fries were soggy and not especially memorable. But kudos to them for not charging extra for sweet potato fries or tater tots. Unfortunately, the service here was quite spotty and disorganized and everything took a while--getting our orders taken, getting our food, getting our checks. 4 stars for the burger, 2 for everything else...so a 3 star spot overall. read more

I came here a lot in the second half of 2011, before moving away, because my vegetarian partner loves their veggie burgers. Heck, I'm an omnivore and *I* really like the veggie burgers. What's not to love about Boyland Heights? We try to come before nearly every UVA basketball game and always have very good food, friendly service and a million TV screens tuned to various sporting events. For a place that advertise its 'handcrafted veggie burgers', their veggie burger is one of the most disappointing and flavorless ones I've ever had (I had it as part of the model UN). On top of that, the sides were also pretty charred. The fries were also pretty mediocre. While I can't speak for their other burgers, I strongly recommend against their vegetarian burgers. read more

I had eaten at this place serval times and had a good experience, but the quality of service and food has gone downhill drastically in the last few months. I popped in for a lunch and waited 1.5 hours for a salad prior to leaving. The tables around us had their food coming out without issue, but the service was terrible and as we tried to tell someone we were leaving, no one stopped us at all or had any idea when our food was going to arrive. I went to this place years ago when it was called Orbitz. Ever since Orbitz closed down and Boylan Heights opened in it's place, I haven't really felt the need to check it out. I haven't eaten red meat for over a decade so it didn't really seem to be a place I should try. A couple of months ago my new doctor put me on a special restricted diet to help improve my thyroid disease, and in the pamphlet he gave me he listed Boylan Heights as having an amazing veggie burger made from quinoa. It's the burger on the menu called "The Valedictorian." Last week I went to check it out. It really was good! I got the sweet potato fries as a side dish. I probably won't be eating much else on the menu but when I am craving a veggie burger for lunch, I will be heading here. read more

Decent burger place but I wouldn't get too excited about it being called a gourmet burger place. As far as the burgers nothing really stood out, their burger combinations were not all that unique or creative, and they were a bit pricey. Doesn't compare at all to Jack Brown's burgers creativity, taste, and price. The food that did impress however were all the sides. Loaded tater tots were so deliciously crispy and loaded just right. The food is mostly local and organic and tastes great. You can create your own burger with a wide variety of items. Had the deep fried pickels once, but they were too greasy for me. Huge gourmet burgers anyway you'd like it and yummy curly fries (ask for honey mustard on the side!). Their BOMB (burger of the month) keeps things interesting and there's always something new to try. Never been here during their bar hours so can't say anything about the night scene here. I got the Western Civ burger, I enjoyed the fact they have organic meat, it has a taste that is not comparable to traditional ground beef. The burger was great and the service was adequate. I would certainly eat hear again to get another burger. read more

My wife and I stopped here this past weekend during a little trip to Charlottesville, and while Boylan Heights came highly recommended, little did I know just how good the burger was actually going to be. We live in DC and have tried our fair share of "gourmet" burger joints - BGR, Good Stuff, Z Burger, etc. - and Boylan Heights blows them away, and it's not even close. The build your own burger option with the menu fashioned like a sushi order is what I would recommend the most. The toppings are fresh, the burger itself is beyond glorious, and if spicy is your thing, the mayo and ketchup options are phenomenal. I hate to give every place I review five stars, but when the burger is as good as it is at Boylan Heights, four stars just won't cut it. Oh, and the beer list is extensive. Scrimshaw on tap? Everyone has talked about the scantrons - they're fun and an easy way to create whatever burger you're in the mood for. Burgers are good and Boylan buys high quality beef and ingredients. Knocked down a peg bc service can be very spotty. I've had great service and horrible service and everything in between. Also, late night scene is pretty miserable. read more

I recently stopped in to Boylan Heights with an associate for lunch. This was my first visit after you were recommended by a close friend. Out of all the places on the corner meant for college students, Boylan Heights has by far the best quality food (burgers). They're really good. You can build your own burger or have one of the menu, either way you can't go wrong. Service can be a bit off, but that's to be expected in charlottesville. read more

Honestly, the food took over 35 minutes to come out and they weren't busy at all. The server also had a terrible attitude and messed our order up once it came to the table and then made it seem like it was our fault. The nachos were really good though, so I will give three stars for that. read more
