Boxcar Grille is definitely a family favorite of ours. But to be honest, I have never eaten off the menu, just their buffet bars. They have an excellent breakfast buffet on the weekends and during the week/weekends they have a salad bar. Everything on the breakfast bar is good and fresh. There isn't as much choice as the giant buffet chains, but what they do have is tasty, good and filling. We came here once for the salad buffet, and I was very impressed. It also doesn't have as many choices, but what they did have was fresh and crisp and cool, and really hit the spot. They have options on their menu to mix it up a little and add the salad buffet to either something you have or add a baked potato to it. I tried the baked potato, and that was also cooked, perfectly fluffy and hit the spot. They also have the option with the salad bar to either have "all you can eat" or one plate only. I'd like that choice, because I only wanted one plate of salad and baked potato, and I still was very, very full afterwards. The ladies that work here are super sweet. They're constantly cleaning, refilling, the bars, getting drinks, etc. They really work hard for their pay. I appreciate that. If you're in town, you really do need to give this place a try. read more

A Statesville staple. If you want decent food, average service, and a quick meal this is your go-to. I wouldn't describe anything as beyond "average/good," but they are consistent and kind. Me, my siblings, aunt, and grandma had gone there one Friday night a while back. It was me and my siblings first time, and we absolutely loved it! Their burgers are top tier and they have a variety of burgers to choose from. I had the black and blue burger. That has blue cheese crumbles and gooey delicious cheese. Best burger I put in my mouth! And they have a very delicious salad bar, you can order the bar and have unlimited salads! It was so good we went at least two Friday nights in a row. I hope to go back soon! read more

We arrived at 8:20 for a 9pm closing but we got excellent service, the food was good and the salad bar was fresh and plentiful. I ordered twin engine tips with grilled veggies and green beans. I'm not a fan of cauliflower and there was too much and the broccoli was undercooked; I could've eaten a whole plate of the grilled carrots tho. Green beans could use some fatback seasoning or even some chunks of ham or bacon for flavor. Tips were cooked just right. I'd probably ask for half veggies on these next time. I would just like to know why do you get little salad plates for a 1 trip salad bar and a big salad plate for unlimited wouldn't it be more logical for the big plate to be a 1 trip salad bar and a small plate for unlimited? you can't get very much on that small plate for all the things offered on the salad bar for 1 trip so make the big plate for 1 trip salad bar and the little plates for unlimited because you can always go back and get "unlimited" with a small plate. it really makes no sense to me and then charge $5 for a 1 trip salad bar. Thats a rip off and you should really look into changing the plate situation or the cost of the small plate 1 trip salad bar. now as far as your breakfast bar on the weekends I think is expensive first of all for it to always be empty and having to wait for it to get replenished is ridiculous and to not offer the salad bar with the breakfast bar with that price is also ridiculous. Golden Corral offers way more then here and I spend the same amount as I would at this establishment. so between Boxcar Grille and Golden Corral I pick Golden Corral majority of the time. read more

Good Food. Relaxed atmosphere I like this place. They server good but not fancy food, in a very blue collar environment with an attention to service and qualtiy. This is the type of place that has been recently forgotten. This is the type of place we grew up with. Not splashy, not pretentious, not looking for anything else other than serving their patrons a good meal at a good value. Had lunch there today and it was great. One of the best that Statesville has to offer. Had the Prime Rib Sandwich with Fries as a side. Let's face it. The Prime Rib is fron a distributor but never the less, it's served fresh and hot. Several other places offer the same except it's not fresh and hot. Everything is great and a special comment ... the Fries are great. Nice and moist with a crispy crust on the outsdie. I didn't think any restaurant could beat my last review, but Boxcar managed to pull it off. There was absolutely nothing on my Thanksgiving plate that was either well presented or edible. I ate the mashed potatoes and regretted it an hour later. The turkey was ripped to shreds and cold, and dry. The cranberry sauce tasted like anything other than cranberry sauce. Maybe battery acid. The green beans weren't green. The pumpkin pie was disgusting and translucent. How's that possible? My one bite wound up in my napkin and the rest went back with my plate of uneaten food. HOWEVER, the rolls were excellent (I ate three) and the waitress was delightful, efficient, and I was compelled to leave her a big tip for both those reasons. Someone said they have the best catfish. Good local family steakhouse. They have a large variety of food, and there is something for the whole family. The salad is amazing. Lots of choices. My favorite is the beef tips with gravy (trolley tips), or Catfish's catfish. read more

A favorite on Wednesday night. We have a group of 5 to 10 people that just loves this place. Our waitress is Reba, we are always treated like family by her and most always receive very good service. Service is pretty terrible most days. Food is iffy, some good meals some bad. Altogether the whole place is iffy. You're either going to catch them on and good day where the service is great and the food is delicious or you're going to catch them on a bad day where the food stinks and so does a service, either way I rather not risk it because it's not cheap unless you go during lunch. The atmosphere has a cute thing going on with the Train theme but that's about all. This place is really wonderful, great food good atmosphere and live music to boot. I really have no bad things to say about this place and the only reason its not a 5 star is because this place is not cheap. two might make it out of there for under $40.00 but, that depends on if you are a light eater or not. personally I could easily blow $40.00 myself. I had a hamburger in here thinking well it's the cheaper good eating. I was surprised however as to how perfect it was cooked. This first off is not just ground beef but, sirloin. It was cooked to perfection , who ever the cook is he must know the cardinal rule of burger cooking, DO NOT SMASH THE PATTY. It was moist juice and perfectly cook through out. Now, the fries were great too crunchy on the outside nice warm ideal inside, and excellently seasoned.I will be back and if I ever have the time to find a girlfriend, this is the absolutely positively best place I have ever seen for a date. This location is inconsistent when compared to the Claremont location. I've had good experiences and less than stellar with regards to service. The bread is generally always on point. I'm a big fan of the wings and dipped tenders in their mild sauce. Breakfast buffet on weekends is a nice touch but last time I went the bar could have been stocked better and fresher. read more

So, instead of spending more money, we went to another establishment just down the way that was both more service oriented and cost effective. Was hungry for a BLT and Boxcar is thee place to go for one. As always I was not disappointed. I also tried the chili and it was very good too. Other half got the Salmon and said it was delicious. When I placed a to go order they were so helpful and packed it separately so food wouldn't get soggy. They don't have chili cheese fries on the menu per say but had the ingredients so made them for me! Great service and great manager/owner not sure who he was but came to the table several times.
