He will confidently preside over the space with the gentle guardian energy of a wise, ancient custodian, ensuring all who enter are assured that they do - in fact - belong here nowhere else more than they do here. You'll look to your right and muse over the selection of Tarot decks, and books on ancient mysticism. You'll find your interest growing as you land on Claire Saffitz's latest cookbook. Electic, you'll think. Then you'll turn around, and displayed proudly at the front will be troves of literature extolling the beauty and depth of the Green Mountain State. Then you'll take your next steps inside. Your eyes will sweep over rows and rows of graphic novels, and a bold fantasy/sci-fi book case that has all of the reverent classics and hot new entries in the genre. Brad will be watching you quietly with a smile, his counter containing select Magic the Gathering cards, each of which enshrined protectively, as if containing the power of these rare relics. And the beating heart of the store, a robust selection of some tabletop games for all interests and ages. The Book Garden has been the much-needed local shop for all of the nerdy and geeky literary and gaming needs of those residing in the greater Montpelier area. I have been picking up my graphic novels from the store for years, and find myself becoming more attached to the place over time. Brad has been more than the new owner of a Montpelier fixture - he has given this place the unyielding amount of love and respect that both it, and our community, deserves. The MW stayed open later for me to get there and pick up a great map at a reasonable price. Inside is much larger and book displays are well designed and thought out, enticing and encouraging you to peruse for your next reading adventure. The owner works hard to curate books from every genre, staying on top of current best sellers, while also offering a great section of local Vermont authors (of both fiction and nonfiction) , games, cookbooks, stationary. There is something for everyone's tastes and preferences. The owner and employees are all very friendly and knowledgeable. They'll gladly order what you'd like if you can't find it in stock. She often hosts events, so follow their Facebook page to learn more. Prices are reasonable and it's always hard to walk out with "just one more book." The store is located next to a lovely coffee shop: perfect combination for a new book to take with you as you sip and dine. If you live local or just visiting, I encourage you to see all they have to offer. Supporting indie booksellers is so important and also rewarding. You won't be disappointed.

The shop also carries a little bit of local merch and some fun extra gifts. One thing I really appreciated was the affordable postcards, which is important to note because they are up-charged at some surrounding stores. I ended up grabbing a few, plus a fun magnet, and they also had a couple local art prints. I was especially captivated by their kids section and all of the authors I had no idea were from Vermont. They displayed it in such a fun and educational way. I now have a new appreciation for so many of the books on our shelves at home. We ended up picking up a farming story about gratitude for makers, chefs, etc for our son's birthday along with a card.
