Grass was pretty much dead and patches of moss in places and years of bunched up leaves just pushed to the edges of the yard. There was a complete ecosystem living in those years of leaves and took a lot of time to clean up and then work the algae or moss out and get rid of all the mushrooms. They have all the equipment to do even tough hillside removal of large trees and they'll chip and haul it way, leave it wood neatly stacked for firewood or even mill it into dimensional lumber if you want.
