I'm pretty sure nothing I could say would be new, but I can't let this place go without a review. It's beautiful, serves great food, and the teas I brought home are delicious. If you think all tea tastes the same, you must only know Lipton's. This place offers up the real deal with an ever changing assortment to purchase and bring home as well. I personally love the flavor of the "Get Well" tea and yes, it actually seemed to help when my throat was killing me while sick. Japanese cherry is also a favorite. I'm hoarding a tin at home as I type... The sandwiches were excellent, though I'm sure that's not why you're here if you're a tea fanatic. ;) We also split a little ice cream for dessert and it was also delicious. Again, probably not why you're here, but if you must eat, know that it's fantastic. The look and feel of the building itself is incredible. Shipped in pieces from Boulder's sister city, it's been put back together in all of it's intricately decorated glory. Teal walls covered in pinks, golds, and yellows with lights strung across the high ceilings create a warm, open atmosphere that never seems to get too loud. It makes the wait worth it to take photos outside in the small garden out front or admiring the interior paintings. Once inside, you could dine at standard tables or find yourself lucky in a pile of pillows on a low table surrounding by a wide array of colors and light filtering in through the side windows. Not ideal if you can't sit on the floor easily, but if you can, I highly recommend requesting a seat at one of these tables! If you're in Boulder, you've got to come check this out whether it's simply to buy a tin of tea and leave or have a full high tea brunch with friends. Beautiful. read more

Absolutely breathtaking decor. The architecture is incredible and I couldn't stop staring at the details all around as I enjoyed a pot of Earl Grey tea and a plate of Thai noodles one evening. I'm sure people around me were already used to such beautiful artwork, probably even chuckling at my awestruck expression the entire time. I couldn't help it though. The food and tea complimented the atmosphere wonderfully; I was definitely very happy the entire time I was there. The staff made me feel at home and were amazingly nice, adding to the great environment. Parking is a bit of hassle, but keep in mind that it is free after 7PM! I really wish they would prepare a "Brunch Platter" with small bites of multiple offerings - similar to Purobeach in Dubai. If so, that would be the way to go! I tried explaining I couldn't even taste the tea and she said she didn't know how to make it without a little hot water (therefore, there was no way to heat it up to fix it). Isn't this a Tea House? - Thirdly: the bill was a low one at $45 and we gave her $60 in cash. After having the bill for a good five minutes, she circles back and asks if we need change. The interior of the Teahouse is absolutely exquisite and stunningly intricate, having been prepared by 40 artisans from Tajikistan. If you're lucky, you'll get a seat at one of the corners on a raised dais with plush cushions. There, you'll sit, with legs criss-crossed or stretched out before you and you'll enjoy your cup of tea. Oh, the tea! It's fabulous. You get your very own teapot with the tea of your choice. On the side is cream, sugar, and whatever else you like in your tea. The white and green teas are particularly great. And their chai! It comes to you in a mug (or glass, if iced) and it is superb. The food, not so much. It's certainly different and there are cuisines from various parts of the world. However, I often find that for the taste and quality of the food, it's a tad overpriced. This is my recommendation: Walk around Pearl Street Mall. Then head on over to the Teahouse for some appetizers and tea. (Such as their hummus plate. Mm, hummus.) My boyfriend and I went here on a date a few months ago- we really enjoyed the table, the tea, but the food was meh. I got the peanut noodles and he got the hummus and the chicken. I tried the hummus, and being from middle eastern descent, I didn't think it was any good, but I can say that about most hummus plates in boulder. A few months ago, my husband took me in here so I could admire the architecture and design. I was in awe. I knew one day I wanted to return to have some tea. On a girl's trip to Colorado, I begged my friends to go to Dushanbe. My intention was to have some morning tea, but we smelled all the yummy food and knew we needed more. I guess cause we were three young, eager girls they offered one of the coveted corner tables to us. The table is on a raised platform with lots of pillows. We immediately felt special. Add the wonderful chai tea and the breakfast, and well, we felt like we just went on a mini-vacay. It was decidedly the best decision we made while visiting Colorado. If you are in Boulder and looking for a fantastic and unique dining experience, this is the place for you. The story behind the building is remarkable and the food is wonderful. My husband and I sat in one of the corner tables which is very romantic and feels authentic. We both enjoyed our dinners immensely. I had the Kufteh and he had the Plov. The Kufteh comes with a soft egg on top which helps to lighten the very intense flavors. Afterwards, he had the vanilla bean black tea and I had the house Chai. The chai was delicious - way better than any I have had before. The vanilla flavor was very faint in his, but it was still good. Lastly, our waitress, Cariann, was super. The best feature of this teahouse is the architecture. I have found it a great place to take people from out of town and soak up the ambience. I find the food to be quasi-gourmet. The menu presents each dish with an emphasis on describing each selection in over-wrought flowery language, making it sound exquisite. The food is not bad by any standard, and often pretty decent, but expect to pay 15 dollars and up for an entree and for it to see a bit more ordinary than it sounds and the price warrants. Again more emphasis on creating the idea that the place is fancy, less so in the final product. The wide selection of teas is mind-boggling and all top shelf, this is where they excel. However, as a local there are places lacking the over-the-top touristy presentation of their tea menu, I can think of two other places in my opinion have better tea. So even here they are not the number one place in town. Being seated is always intense, with much buzz and self-importance. They are popular and exclusive and know it, as a patron I feel that from the staff, who seem under a lot of pressure and so prefer someplace more low-key and where I don't have to wait 30-45 minutes for a place to sit. Come during the week and you won't have this issue. In sum, coming here is more about the experience and less about the final product, in this category it's good enough and coming here is worth it and a nice place to bring out of towners or have a date night. But as a restaurant and tea house you are surrounded by better options. I will say at least one visit is warranted as the structure itself is incredible, exotic and extravagant, having the entire building constructed in Uzbekistan and then shipped over to Boulder piece by piece. read more

The building was designed (wood carved, etc) in Tajikistan, then shipped over, kept in a warehouse in pieces for a while, and reconstructed in downtown Boulder. Check out the pics, it's amazing. The first thing of note here after the architecture is the extensive tea menu. Really extensive. Colorful definitions of all their different teas. I had something herbal, and it came in a cute teapot that I appreciated. The menu is an unusual mix of Tajik, Indian, Persian, Indonesian, Thai, and Middle Eastern dishes. I had the Moroccan Salad Plate, with couscous, orange, fennel, sweet potato, country olives & toasted walnuts, and lemon mint vinaigrette. Everything was good except the "country olives," which was a tomato-olive salad with a funky, moldy aftertaste. After I ate the rest of the dish, I told the waiter, and he hesitantly suggested that maybe I wasn't "used to it." I told him that I know what olives are supposed to taste like, and there was something off about this one small part of the dish. He took it back to the kitchen, and they ended up comping the flourless chocolate cake I ordered (with Persian spiced dark chocolate ice cream, candied rose and rose syrup- wow!). Outdoor seating is amongst the greenery and vines. Indoors was a bit noisy, but manageable. We came Sunday for brunch and only had a wait of 10-15 minutes. Inside you can sit at tables or there were two table arrangements where you can sit on pillows, those usually get reserved or have a longer wait time. They have a great selection of teas that range from $3-$5 they also have an abundant choice of drinks, tea cocktails and espresso bar. My daughter and I visited this unique restaurant while checking out the university and loved the delicious food and impressive detailed designs throughout the entire establishment. The fountain was lovely and we delighted to see the "rescued" fish in it - lol. While awaiting our dinner, we gorged on their delicious bread that had a touch of salt on the crust. This is a gorgeous place to visit! There are free dance lessons outside of the Teahouse, and the traditional eating tables were very cool looking. If you want an authentic meal, this is the place to go. The inlays were gorgeous and my friend, who grew up in the area near the Soviet, had tears in her eyes looking at the traditional dress while walking around. It was a lovely to hear her memories and very educational for me to experience the authenticity of the Teahouse. I didn't eat here but I did purchase tea and we were able to talk with a couple of customers while waiting. I love loose leaf tea and I was impressed at the selection. It was small but a great range of teas. As a former Teavana customer, it was a nice find. I gave this 4 stars based on the limited experience we had. Well, we never did make it to the dining experience, but we did waste 50 minutes of our lives (after agreeing to 30-35), and when we left at 50, we didn't get the table notification until we were well into appetizers at the next place....well over an hour. I thoroughly enjoyed both my visits here. I personally feel that this is one of Boulder's top attractions and a must-do while in town. I enjoy so many things about this Teahouse/lounge/restaurant/art gallery all rolled into one. What I most enjoy is the atmosphere in which the food is served in- the artisanal interior setting feels almost like visiting a palace in Central Asia, with some outdoor seating along a brook outside that is quite charming as well. The food itself is pretty exotic and very tasty as well. Some drinks/food I highly recommend: the Indian chai (the Indian chai is the best I've ever had), the Persian beef over rice with naan, the banana and chocolate crepe. Portions lean towards average (not McAmerican sizes like many US restaurants), portions similar to what you'd find in Europe or Asia. You'll have fun here, whether it's visiting for brunch, lunch, or dinner. Afternoon tea was particularly subpar, with dried out, barely-filled, bland cucumber sandwiches and unappetizing dessert bites. The complete lack of sandwich variety was especially disappointing, as one of my favorite parts of afternoon tea is sampling 3+ types. Given that we had a reservation, it shouldn't have taken half an hour to serve food, although helps explain the utterly parched bread... All of the textures were a bit off from what I'd expect, such as runny jam and overly dense Devonshire cream with zero fluff. The lemon scones and phillo pockets were the only decent food items. Amusing side story: Our server was either baked as hell or just entirely uninterested in his job. We asked for more cream and got the liquid kind instead of Devonshire. Tried again later on in the meal and was brought extra lemon curd when our original dish was still full, at which point we just stared and laughed it off. My tea-buff friend wanted to inquire further about certain teas, but noted that, "I'm afraid of breaking his brain." However, she ended up asking and he sent over the tea "sommelier" who was knowledgeable and friendly, so that helped. The decor is amazing. The tea house was made in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. The dissembled the building and relocated it here. The decor is beautiful, paintings are reminiscent of the region. The atmosphere is chill and social. People lounging, reading, eating. It's really communal feeling. Server was friendly, helpful, and knew the menu well. I recommend the plov. It's amazing. It's ethnic. The last time I had this was while I was in Kyrgyzstan. The beef was cooked medium rare. Tender. As big fans of tea, we drove from Denver (while there on vacation), to meet local friends at this special place. It certainly did not disappoint, from the tea itself to the wonderful, unusual building (do read the backstory) and the brunch food. Among our favorites were a filling chai pancake, and a complex Persian omelette called kookoo sabzi. We had several outstanding drinks, including a beautifully balanced Golden Milk, a floral Lady Earl Grey tea, and a gentle "silver needles" white tea. All of the teas are available for purchase, most both in bulk and in tea bags. Our server, Ari, was both patient, knowledgeable, and animated-- truly outstanding. The Teahouse does not take brunch reservations, and the place is not large, so it can be an hour or more before a group is seated; still, the Boulder pedestrian area is a pleasant place to walk or sit while one waits. The ambience was relaxing and our waiter was knowledgeable and attentive. My boyfriend and I tried two different puerh teas since we'd never had them before and one was recommended by our waiter. Its flavor is described as "earthy" - I would say it's very mild. We didn't get to try any food, but I'd be interested to see what they serve for afternoon tea.
