First time In this place and I was outside staring at my gps and then the numbers and names on the doors figuring out where I was and where the restaurant was lol ‍ when the host shouted my name hahaha he said my friend is already upstairs and he knew I was coming! Such a cool spot, the bar is downstairs and tables upstairs with yellow lights, casement windows overlooking the streets on one side and another wall covered in a mural setting the vibe.. the host and server were friendly and chatting with the guests throughout the night. We enjoyed trying the added appetizer for the night of foie gras with balsamic vinegar and apples and pears on the side. The host explaining how to add a little bit of balsamic and salt and pepper to it then ending each bite with a bite of the apple or pear, really tasty! We made reservations for 7:30 pm on Bastille day. When we arrived we were told there were no tables. There was a table that was clearly empty upstairs, and an hour later when we were seated at 8:30 they sat us at that empty table. The server didn't take our order for another 25 minutes and only after I went and asked for it. After all of the food we were still a bit hungry so we ordered a cheese plate, usually it comes with blue cheese but I can't handle the taste. I can just never get myself to enjoy blue cheese so instead we just got the goat! The marinade on the cheese really elevated the flavor. And now for dessert. We ordered the " pain d'épices " and the " panna cotta " the pain d'épices is definitely a perfect fall dessert. it tastes kind of like a pumpkin spice latte. but my absolute favorite is the panna cotta. I was looking for a traditional-style French restaurant to take my mother to celebrate her birthday, and Bouche was a smash hit. Rotating every two weeks, the prix-fixe menu delivers great value (at least for SF), and is beautifully in tune with seasonal produce. Not being a big eater, I was concerned at feeling over-fed after three courses, but the dishes were exceptionally well balanced. Given the frequency of menu changes, I won't go into the dishes in detail, except to highlight the chocolate and zucchini cake, which was an incredible combination that completely solved the over-richness of almost all chocolate desserts. Staff were very attentive, gave excellent wine recommendations, and in most cases were French speakers! I'd highly recommend Bouche for any special occasion or intimate dinner. This place is amazing. Usually restaurants will blow me away on their apps or desserts and disappoint when it comes to the entrees, but Bouche delivered on ALL their courses. The space is small and cozy. Like everyone mentions, it feels like you are going into a small, cozy home from the 1920's, complete with an old school rotary phone near the entrance. We sat upstairs by the window, but I wished we were by the railing so I could look over the kitchen. RESERVATIONS: We had a reservation for 4 people at 5:30pm on a Saturday, made a month or two in advance online. Otherwise, with the limited seating, there most likely would have been a wait! MUST-HAVES: Panisses, Hanger Steak, Seared Swordfish (I was completely blown away by this Swordfish!). Environment: This is a cute little french restaurant that has a small bar area downstairs and some additional seatings on the second floor by open windows. The environment itself was intimate, with candle-lit tables within a small space. However, reggae music was being played, which cracked me up, so not the most romantic place. The pork belly was delicious and so well prepared. It wasn't a large portion, but the plating was very well done. The hanger steak was delicious as well. I get mine medium rare, and it was chewy and pretty flavorful. The portion was decent. When we got there, our table was not ready, but that was ok, because we were compensated with water from the host and the amazing meal ahead. We started out getting the adventurous. You never know what it is, but tonight it was duck patē. It. Was. Awesome. I can't even describe how tasty the duck was, with the crunchy bread and mixed greens. Then we got the beef tartare. Amazing. The raw beef really went well with the egg in the middle, with crunchy bread and some greens. Then we got some rabbit croquets. Now, I know they may not sound too good, but it was amazing. The sauce extended the flavor and it really was great. Honestly, it kind of reminds me as a Chinese dish with meat and some vegetables. Finally, for the main course I had the veal. It really went well with the Chimichurri like sauce. And of course, the veal was amazing and cooked perfectly. And, the desert. I ordered the chocolate, which, cannot be translated how good it was in words. I love the sea of creamy chocolate with some crumbles and a white chocolate island. Stumbled upon this little French restaurant when I was looking for a dinner spot with a friend. I was attracted by the set menu design of this place and decided to eat here. This is a very quaint restaurant. With only one stove and three cooks working in a small corner of the two story building. With the servers all being French, it was a nice dining experience overall. For starters we both ordered the Early Spring Soup, a purée of carrot, turnip, and celery root. Upon first tasting it, I thought I was drinking the purée of mirepoix. But the lack of onion flavor interrupted that thought. This creamy green mixture started as a very mediocre tasting soup, but then we were served a olive paste on a cracker, which changed the taste of this course for the better. The subtle olive flavor lasted in my mouth and elevated the taste of the soup. Apart from the $55 set menu, I also ordered a few additional items. They ran out of the focaccia bread so we went with Campagne Rustic Bread, four slices of warm sourdough bread with, what I assumed, house made butter sprinkled with sea salt. This is a nice addition to the meal if you are looking to fill your stomach with something good, but it is not a must. I also ordered the Adventurous for $18, which is a surprise dish made by the chef without me knowing what it is before eating it. Upon close examination, I found out what's on the dish. It had braised chicken heart and red-wine poached chicken bits between two pieces of puff pastry. The whole thing was served with two sauces: a red wine reduction and a very garlicky green sauce.(I think spinach) The whole dish was well made and the flavors all came together. For entree, we ordered the Country style pork chop and the Fresh porcini tagliatelle, both with the $30 truffle addition. Straight up, don't get the truffle. Although they say it is the Perigord truffle from Spain, it has less truffle taste than Trader Joe's truffle paste, especially for the pork. I do get why they would put truffle on mushroom pasta, but the, grated instead of shaved, truffle did not add any flavor to the dishes. Apart from that, the pork chop was cooked nicely, only a little raw close to the bone, which is normal. If this happened, just ask the server to bring it back and cook it more. The beans pancetta mash was tasty yet not too oily. While the pesto that went with the dish paired well with the pork, it was a bit too oily. One thing that confused me in this dish was the two, long, grilled, green onions on top of the pork chop. They were too tough to be chewed or cut through, so I had to swallow the whole plant in one bite. Though I get how the flavor could work together, it just didn't work for this dish. For the porcini tagliatelle, the mushroom in there are very tasty, nice fresh flavors. And the sauce had a good flavor that did not cover up the mushroom flavor. But for a dish like this, the main focus should still be on the pasta. The restaurant chose to use a house made pasta, which I applause, but it had too much flour to egg ratio, meaning the pasta had a little flour taste and the texture is not as good as a pasta made with more eggs. Our server suggested we have one of each dessert so we can have a taste of both. So we had the Honey pistachio cake and the Brokaw clementine mousse. The cake was just okay, a little shell-shaped cake with a scoop of whipped cream. Nothing too surprising about it. The mousse tasted better. With supreme of clementines covering the top of a disc of mousse, this dessert was a good cleanser for the end of this meal. read more

Woohoo! I finally got to try Bouche after eyeing it on Yelp for years. I met up with a friend who happened to suggest Bouche for dinner and it was an excellent choice. He lives nearby and had been there several times before. He explained that they have a small, rotating menu and each item on the menu is reliably tasty. I'm glad he made a reservation because the second floor dining space is very small. On a hot day, the space was also rather warm and the first thing I did upon sitting was to open the window behind me. I was concerned that other diners would object to the street noise but instead everyone else complimented me on the idea and opened the other window as well. Ordering was simple since there were only 4 entree choices. He went for the steak (medium rare) and I had the shiitake mushroom risotto. He looked at me in confusion, as I am generally a carnivore. But I have a soft spot for risotto and I love shiitake mushrooms and didn't mind getting the "vegetarian" option this time. I was not disappointed when the delicious meal came out. We chatted about life and before I knew it, both of our plates were completely empty. Although we didn't "need" dessert, we decided to share a Creme Fraiche custard. It was served with a mini bowl of butterscotch and had the perfect balance between the subtleness of creme fraiche and the sweetness of the butterscotch. Bouche offers a quaint and charming decor that also exudes an essence of coziness with its petite-sized dining. You would have to make reservations to this tightly knit space, unless you want to wait for an excruciating long time to try this place out. We ordered up their Bacon Fougasse as a starter and the bread was soft and warm. Add the bacon bits and it made the bread seem as if it was a homely offering. Their voluminous and delicious scallops were grilled and flavored with perfection! The softness and creaminess of the Tarragon Polenta that was tucked right below the scallops, went fabulously well together! I couldn't get enough of it! As for their Lamb Shank, the roasted almonds and couscous, added the hard and soft textures to the whole entree. This dish fared well with our red wine the most! I dare say Bouche delivers more than many Michelin's new discoveries, as well as 1 star restos. The food is simply...muahhh... so tasty. Chickpea Fries (panisses) sounds so good, but they were thick and tasted like polenta. I'll take my fried calories elsewhere (2.0 stars, $8). The small Spring Salad with pecans and running egg yolk as dressing was interesting but nice (4.0 stars, $10). Simply amazing. I have not had a French meal experience this good since Paris. My wife and I had a night in the city to ourselves. Without reservations, I hoped to spontaneously run into something. What we found was a treasure. The place is small and unassuming from the outside. But as soon as you walk in, you can get the feeling you're about to encounter something special. Definitely my favorite in SF right now. They totally won me over. I'm already admittedly a Francophile, so I was charmed by the atmosphere. Everyone speaking in French/with heavy French accents. The dimly-lit bar seating downstairs and the few tables upstairs. The tiny kitchen we got to sit in front of and watch the chefs in action and chit chat with them when they got a spare moment. The wonderful waitress we had. (Well everyone was super nice! Never understood why people thought the French were mean.) The different wine selection... all of it. We kicked things off with the seafood pappardelle app, which had bites of some crazy amazingess. I had been craving sea urchin, so this totally hit the spot. The prawn was strange -- it had this texture I've never experienced before. Everything was delicate and well-executed. Then we (ok I) quickly decided on the charcuterie plate. AWWW yeah, wild boar pistachio pate, goat cheese chorizo crostini, huge jar of duck confit... The goat cheese chorizo spread especially was a religious experience. Wow. The chef thought we were going to head towards dessert by this time but I sheepishly said no.. I think we're gonna choose an entree. So we got the lamb loin, which was great with the cold haricot vert salad and warm grilled squash. Refreshing for a lamb dish. Finally we went for dessert. We chose the goat cheese cake with beet ice cream (how interesting!) but they sent out some creme fraiche panna cotta with some dulce de leche first, those sweethearts. So simple and yet SO GOOD. Heavenly, like the chef said. Then the cheesecake... great twist on the classic and a great pairing. We sat there munching away for nearly 3 hours. Just the way I like it. We were so obviously into the food that we convinced a couple who just came in for drinks to order a few dishes and a few more glasses of wine too. MMMMMM can't wait to go back! read more

Splendid place. Food tremendous and the service quite attentive. Nice atmosphere.. we ate upstairs and it was really nice.
