I signed up for a tour of the Botanical Building on the first day of visiting San Diego. It's a beautiful building with a rich history and beautiful surroundings. The tour guide was nice, though you could probably wander around and scan the QR codes for a cheaper outing. Definitely a spot not to miss when in San Diego!
Such a beautiful place to visit and walk around. So many interesting plants to admire. If I lived nearby, I think I'd visit here often just to feel inspired by the diversity of plant life.
A beautiful conservatory that houses over 2,000 plants. It's humid and feels like you have just stepped into a mini jungle. It's very photogenic and the best part is that it's free to everyone. Weekday mornings are the best time to visit because this place is popular and gets very crowded. I always leave wanting to purchase more plants for my home.
Cute free botanical area at Balboa Park. Really unique and stunning architecture. Love the fusion of metal, plants, and wood. Lots or varieties of stunning plants and flowers. Honestly just a cool, relaxing place to walk through and disconnect.
Small free area with lot of plants to look at. Multiple entrances and exits so you don't have to crowd in one area. It looks like a green house from a distance but the whole building has air gaps to allow breeze.
Its gorgeous here! But from what I remembered 20 years ago was that it was bigger? I mean its been a long time. I used to take my kids here when they were babies. Right now they have qr codes for plant information and its just one big line of plants. The plants are beautiful and well taken cared of. Its vibrant and green and looks luscious! Balboa park is so awesome bc of the museums and its different attractions. This botanical garden definitely highlights Balboa park.
Amazing garden with beautiful greenery. Parking is tough at Balboa park but entry to the garden is free. Tours are available but staff are available to provide insightful and fun facts about the plants here.
Balboa Park's Botanical Building is a must-stop. The plants inside are well curated and really pretty. Also the building is free to enter, which is great. The building isn't lavish but it's a good spot to spend 20-30 minutes while visiting the park grounds. The koi out front were pretty cute too.
Absolutely the most amazing stunning, botanical garden with beautiful array of different plants and very well taken care of. Definitely a must if you're in the area to go see.
To all plant lovers, green thumbers, Floraphile, philophyte, Gardeners, botanist ..... beautiful Botanical building. You must do a walk through. Botanical Building has som vibrant seasonal flower displays. Built for the 1915-16 Exposition, along with the adjacent Lily Pond and Lagoon, the historic building is one of the largest lath structures in the world. The Botanical Building plantings include more than 2,100 permanent plants, featuring fascinating collections of cycads, ferns, orchids, other tropical plants, and palms. My eyes were so glued to the patterns and colors of the plants. Take your time with the plants and just enjoy nature.
The botanical gardens at Balboa Park are a must see. Not only are they free but they're also centrally located and easy to walk to and just finished up a renovation. The actual garden is fairly small so we only take 20 to 30 minutes to see all the plants (or even less)! Due to the recent renovations, one of the volunteers working did share that they didn't feel that it was as lush as it had been previously, but, some of the larger trees they were able to work around and they are definitely worth seeing. The architecture of the building is very impressive and it's the perfect spot for some of those quick Instagram photos. Don't miss this spot when you're visiting the park.
The newly refurbished Botanical Building is an architectural wonder and it is quite beautiful. It is the largest Redwood lath structure still existing in the world! Originally built in 1915 for the Exposition, it houses over 2,100 permanent plants including ferns, cycads, orchids, palms and seasonal displays. At 250 feet long, it is a large building, but one can admire the plants and fountains for as long or as little time as you'd like. I can spend ten minutes here or an hour depending on time of year, plants blooming & how crowded it is, but every time I visit, I am awed by this incredible space and the diverse array of flora that it houses. There are QR code signs throughout the building that take you to an interactive map that contains detailed information about the various plants. There is also a docent usually on duty in the center of the building who will answer questions for you. Balboa Park is considered one of the Crown Jewels of San Diego and to me, the Botanical Building is certainly a diamond in that collection.
I love the rebuilt building! It is beautiful and so well maintained. If you are visiting Balboa Park you definitely gotta walk through here. It's free to walk around and boasts beautiful plants. I will warn you, it is a bit on the small side so have other things on your itinerary to do in the park but this is worth the visit.
The Botanical Building was one of my favorite spots to visit when I went to Balboa Park. It is such a beautiful and peaceful spot. I loved walking around and seeing all the different plants, flowers and greenery. There's even a pretty fountain inside! Thai spot is a great place to just relax and walk around. I have an unabashed affinity for conservatories, I confess I watch Bridgerton just so that I can marvel at the conservatories they unveil for their summer time dance galas. Anyway, the botanical building in Balboa park, Sand Diego though made of wood lath is nonetheless considered a conservatory and reputedly the only wood lath conservatory in the world and also one of the largest of its kind globally. As soon as one enters, they are greeted by the intoxicating smell of fecund moist earth. The wood lath structure allows the breeze to flow through but cuts down the harsh sun creating a dappled sanctuary. I felt like a little child let loose in candy land, the display is a feast for the senses with monsteras, philodendron, ferns, orchids, begonias, cycads etc in every corner. One side had majestic soaring plants reaching the ceiling while the other side felt bare in comparison. The lily pond greeting one at the entrance also houses turtles, pink lotuses, frogs and fish. Overall a must visit for people who have a thing for plants or even-otherwise. read more
This is a nice little area if you want to walk around and look at some plants. They also have some flowers and a little water fountain as well inside the Botanical building. We came here during my wife weekend birthday getaway and she wanted to come to Balboa Park. I parked at a parking lot nearby this building and just walked here. The weather was kind of cloudy and humid but once get inside, it felt nice. My wife and I been here before when we first started dating so it was nice to bring our daughter with us this time. read more

A beautiful conservatory that houses over 2,000 plants. It's humid and feels like you have just stepped into a mini jungle. It's very photogenic and the best part is that it's free to everyone. Such an awesome place with so much history and beauty! The Botanical Building is one of my favorite spots in Balboa Park -- it's peaceful, relaxing, and always a joy to stroll through. We came here with our granddaughter and took some lovely photos with the pumpkin displays -- perfect for the season. It's amazing how well they've preserved the charm and character of this historic building. A great stop for a quiet walk, photos, or just to enjoy the plants and atmosphere. Always worth a visit when in Balboa Park! read more

The only reason I didn't give this full marks is because the time spent here could be as short as just a few minutes; however, don't let this diminish your visit to this FREE space. The pros for this building outweigh any cons you can think. For starters, this space is perfect for pictures. If you are an IG girl or someone who just loves capturing beautiful things this building is perfect for you. Utilizing a juxtaposition of old world architecture with nature you feel like you're in a space made for flappers who loved gardening. With high arches above and a feeling of a gilded era it feels classy without feeling kitschy. It's stated the reason we feel God or spiritual in large cathedrals or structures is because it makes you realize how small you are and this can explain the feeling of something bigger than you. If that's the case, the Botanical Building will also give you similar vibes, along with Jurassic Park 3 where the pterosaurs were in their cage. Where are the dinosaurs?! All in all, though this stop will hardly take any time out of your San Diego itinerary it is well worth a visit if you are in this space. read more
Such a beautiful little getaway within Balboa Park. The building is free to enter. I've passed it so many times on my runs and walks along the prado, and can't believe I've never stopped in. It's big and airy, beautiful infrastructure, and then SO. MANY. BEAUTIFUL. PLANTS!!!! It's not that big, we probably strolled around for 10 minutes or so, but 100% worth it for a stop in! read more
The Botanical Building in Balboa Park is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! This one is a free entry. I believe it has been recently renovated. It has intricate woodwork design that lets the sun shine through with thriving beautiful plants. It has a small pond in front of the entrance. There's a few wildlife living there. There is also a fountain outside as well. The inside is awesome. There are trees, plants, and flowers all over. It is a large building. However, it really doesn't take long to walk around. There's people taking pictures and selfies so it might take a few extra minutes if you're waiting for a particular shot. We actually came through here a few times to admire the beautiful plants and flowers. The building and its architecture is AMAZING! We enjoyed the serenity feeling of its beauty. There's a couple of benches in there. It's nice to sit back and enjoy the sunshine and beauty. People watching was also entertaining. Their reactions to the beauty was priceless! read more

I was excited to visit now that it has re-opened after construction! The architecture is beautiful and eye catching. The open air wood structure is perfect for San Diego's many sunny days. It's a great part of Balboa Park and with free admission, why not stop by and enjoy the plants? :) It is smaller on the inside than you would expect, and I feel like the plant selection was more basic. I was hoping to see some more unique, tropical plants. I thought they had some scratch and sniff plants, so I wish they still had that. Maybe they'll continue to add more plants in the future! read more
ADMIRING INSIDE AND OUT (4 stars) It's the first time going inside the Botanical Building. I have admired the outside like of this infamous picture worthy backdrop like the rest of the world. They open from 10a - 4p (or 430p). No pets allowed - only service animals. There is no entrance fee. It's basically a greenhouse. If you like plants, this is for you. I just saw plants and felt like I walked into a plant nursery and called it done in less than 10 minutes. It's nice and clean. Until the next review... read more

While I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to see this alone in Balboa Park, I would absolutely add it on to anything I would visit in Balboa Park. The long restoration just completed a few months ago and it was definitely worth while. The building itself is just amazing to look at. The plants are thriving inside and the setting and sunshine are very relaxing inside of the Botanical Building. I did not see any flowers really during my recent visit, but there should be many blooming flowers in the next few months. Definitely depends on which season you decide to visit during. Just a beautiful place to be! read more
I have not stepped foot into the Botanical Building here and I wish I did when it was the old design. Upon coming the breeze was already cool and shady, the roofing of the building is beautiful and bright! I liked the simplicity of the botanical garden and felt like there should be more signs of what plants are instead of scanning a QR code, but that's just me! The fountains on opposite ends were nice, but could use some more to it. I felt very serene walking through the small building but it's a nice spot to relax and enjoy some plants. Hopefully it's not the end of the remodel yet! There's some construction on the ramp to get here from the main plaza near the museum, but you are still able to enter the building without any traffic. read more
What is the greatest place you can go to that has the many years of the park with the many plaques the many colors aromas that can relax so many? Balboa Park has one of the great botanicals the many plants that were here since the early 1800s the park had so many breeds of plants and flowers. The large botanical garden that when you come to the garden of the park with the pond the fish swimming the site of the baby turtles that can be seen walking near the water.Goung to the Botanical at the park the walk in is 9 ebthat takes you past the many museums for my day at the Botanical was one the trip back into the history of the garden. The Botanical was closed for remodel before the grand opening the opening the many going to the garden the look and the many colors it's like the botanical has traveled forward in time. No drinks are allowed inside you may not touch the plants with the menu colors you may see the color that catches your eye. Balboa Parks history is one that has so many great events the worlds fair that was held here with the new awakening of the garden more people will be coming to Balboa Park The many close eateries you can go to on the Broadway of the park with museums that have eateries the park has much more to bring and reveal. As a Yelp Elite Reviewer the entry to the Botanical it was like you were looking at history the creators of the park. You can see through the eyes of the creators of the beauty of the garden it is one place to come and take a walk through. read more
While very beautiful and an amazing feature of Balboa, and agreeing with a lot of recent reviews, the botanical building could use more of a diverse, plentiful plant display. If hanging plants or wrapped plants were along the sides and extending vertically, it would create a more jungle-esque feel & add some shadows to the interior which I feel would make it more magical to enter. It was absolutely gorgeous while it was raining at the park as you can see in these photos! But hoping more is added on and more creativity is involved as they continue to evolve the space. read more

Very MIDDDDDDD loved the building structure but I saw this online and was hoping for some crazy cool plants with full greenhouse vibes. It's definitely not that if you that's what you were hoping for BUT the building is very cute --- very busy tho and no dogs allowed or drinks read more

Just open in early December of 2024, this magnificent building, after a 3-year restoration project, is just beautiful! The immense wood structure is a great thing to spectate and to photograph! Inside, there are many interesting plants along the internal walkways. Great holiday flora on display at the time of this writing. This beautiful building is free to visit but closes at 4pm so be sure to get there in time ! read more

Super gorgeous inside and so lucky to have been around SD when they first reopened the renovated building. It's free to enter and has little areas with fountains and some information about the garden. Just a quick little walk through. Recommend walking through if you're visiting Balboa Park. read more

The recently refreshed Botanical Building is an easy and pleasant space to visit. Free. Easy level access. No steps as I recall. Nice lawn for friends and families or a respite just in front. The koi pond in front of it is a popular photo op from the Prado main walking path South of the entrance. Enjoy visiting frequently. Turtles and birds are often in the koi pond too. The Timken museum is next door and always free access. Things are growing and filling up the Botanical Building again. Nice space. read more
The remodel is so beautiful!!! Great job, Balboa Park Conservatory or whoever arranged this. It looks more beautiful than ever and is so pleasant and relaxing to visit (esp. on a weekday - on a weekend it might be nuts now that it reopened!). read more
Looks like the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers from the outside, but it's about half the size and not a glass greenhouse. It's open air structure. The wood structure looked pretty new, and just read another Yelp review that it re-opened earlier in December 2024. Great for a 15-30 minute walk through, has a few benches to sit and take it in. I can imagine this being a nice garden venue for intimate weddings or special events. Plant selection - there's a QR code to download a map but would've been nicer if there were signs posted. Various poinsettias but not much flowering except for wild orchid in tree. Hope there will be more flowers next time! read more

Just remodeled and VERY cute! It's kind of in the heart of balboa with lots to do around it, and doesn't get as crowded on weekdays compared weekends. Overall a cute and free place to visit and take photos! read more
