Something happens as you start walking about, getting lost in the nonchalant paths that are at the same time deep labyrinths and simply logical: there is an inherent charm to these gardens that makes you want to stay and take your time. If you're used to botanic gardens, you'll find plants sorted according to the 'normal' categories: wet, dry, sunny, exotic, etc. Yet for once the distinction between each of them is done so sweetly that the garden moves away from being a simple catalog, to becoming a place where you're simply enjoying yourself. Other visitors seem to be on the same wavelength and everybody moves about as if in a dream. How long will it take you to realise that it's the same water trickling down from the top terrace to the one at the bottom? If it's springtime, how long can you resist before you stick your nose into one of those orange trees in full blossom? How guilty will you feel when you snatch that plump, ripe mandarin from that tree when nobody is watching, and want to cry when you compare with what you've been eating so far? The garden may be small, and far away, but spend an hour there and it feels like you've spent a week-end at someone's place who is going to be your friend forever. It's quite easy to find, specially if you took the old wooden train from Palma: right out of the station as you head towards the city square, turn left into the first street marked with a one-way sign, going against the traffic (Carrer d'Isabel II). Walk for five minutes until you get to the church then turn right into Cami de son Pons - a small street that soon joins up with a bigger road. Keep walking for three minutes and you'll find the garden on the right handside.

Large fountain and a big body of water where there were a few kayakers paddling away. As well, a few people playing with their dogs. It's a neat park and a good hangout on a sunny day. One warning - a lot of the concrete is very corroded and broken. Watch your step.

Plus this worked perfectly because it's actually 10 minutes away by car from where we're staying in the town of Ses Salines. And do you know the pain it took to wait on a narrow as hell two-lane, two-way dirt road for 40 minutes in stand-still traffic just to park at the lot? The Saturday we came, the line JUST to park, was horrendous and what added fuel to the fire was that most of the lot was inundated from a rainstorm the day prior. Do try and find what works for you in terms of time. For an August high peak season, we picked up the lingo and their ways- so we know now. The beach here- as in all of Mallorca's coast, is pristine, €8 to park is for the entire day- but do ask, if you can head out and return with the same ticket(?). There's a small beach café(?)/kiosk selling alcohol drinks like Sangria, Mai Tai, etc, popsicles, and some fast food. Whether you want to work on your tan or enjoy the Mediterranean, this is it.

Cala del Pilar was absolutely gorgeous! Since my visit I've disovered that there are a couple…read moredifferent ways to get there. The way I took was a 45 minutes to an hour (eek!) hike from a parking lot off Camí d'Alfurí where I parked my rental scooter. It was a long walk! To say "I wasn't prepared," is an understatement. Mostly up hill, sandy, rocky, and mixed amounts of shade. But all that aside, it was soo worth it! When I arrived at Cala del Pilar there was a staircase down the rocky terrain to the sandy beach featuring deep turquoise and blue waters framed by rich red walls. All that and less than twenty people to share it with! PERFECT! Apparently the red mud near the stairs is actually used by many folks as a mask treatment. I soaked up some sun and dipped my toes in the perfect waters while snapping some pictures. It was totally worth the journey for some quiet time away from the more crowded beaches. I would def do it again! The walk back was far easier physically, but mentally you just don't want to go!
