When you have a chance to eat history, you stick a utensil in it, lift it to your mouth, take a bite and try to be entertained while you eat. This is what we decided to do at Botin, the oldest restaurant in the world. Yes, there are singers coming around to give you a serenade during dinner. Yes, the singers are dressed in somewhat Medieval garb. Yes, they sing classic Medieval songs like "Despacito" and "Tengo las Camisa Negra". That was the entertainment part. As for the meal, we tried the black sausage from Burgos, garlic soup with egg, roast suckling pig, roast baby lamb, and fried squid rings.The food was all OK. The suckling was better than the lamb and the squid rings were fine. The black sausage was good but there were 8 pieces and no one else at my table seemed interested in eating it. I should probably not eat a whole order of morcilla... The garlic soup was good and the egg was good to mix into the soup. I didn't take the tour, but that would have been an interesting historical lesson. Overall it was A-OK and worth it to say that I ate at the oldest restaurant in the world. We came to Botín following several in-person and online recommendations. We were most intrigued given its expansive operating history. Service: We found the servers to be attentive and polite. They obviously knew the menu well and were more than happy to give honest recommendations. Locale: The physical building is stunning. We were lucky enough to sit in the underground barrel vault near the cellar. The brickwork was beautiful, as was the wooden structure above ground. Food: We both opted for the three course menu and switched out the cold gazpacho (against the waiter's recommendations) for the garlic soup. The soup was excellent, although quite hearty and warm to eat on a hot summer night (hence the waiter's recommendation). We also ordered the baby squid, a dish that remains one of the culinary highlights of my two weeks in Spain. This dish is a must-have! Finally, we both ordered the suckling pig. While I generally am not a huge fan of pork, this dish was a stunner! The meat was tender and juicy, and the skin was thick and succulent. No reservation, here is what you do. I done it two times successfully. Go to the restaurant 15mins before open and get on line your chance of getting a table is high. I had the lamb and suckling pig, boy are delicious and flavorful. Spain wine is cheaper then water, so order yourself a bottle of wine. I also had the pawn...it is top notch with deep garlic flavor simmer into the seafood. The service is good, I was there as a party of two and they sat us on a table for 4(the smallest when you no reservation). 15mins into the experience all the tables are full, A couple came in from Italy and was told no more table. According to the Guinness Book of Records (see certificate), this is the oldest restaurant in the world, dating from 1725. The restaurant is also mentioned in the book Fortunata y Jacinta by Benito Pérez Galdós (published 1886-1887) and Goya supposedly worked here before becoming a painter. Hemingway was a frequent visitor and pronounced it one of his favourite restaurants. Today, the restaurant is decidely a tourist spot, since it appears in so many guides. Oldest restaurant in the world! Found out by accident while walking away from Plaza Mayor and going down this street looking at shops. Saw the cute window display and one of the workers (it was closed for siesta) came out for a smoke. I asked if we could get a 4 PM reservation (that's when they re opened) and got in. Had the suckling pig and the lamb chops and the gazpacho, a salad, appetizers and a pitcher of sangria... Anyways, we eat family style and the suckling pig had moist, flavored meat with crispy skin. Super yummy. The pork was good too. Service was excellent. What keeps this review from 5 stars is that the food was very good but needs more than just a potato garnish with these meat dishes. You'd think that a well known restaurant like Botin, which is considered one of the oldest in all of Spain would be touristy, you'd be right it is. However, it's also got a mix of locals, and don't let the tourists deter you. This place is fantastic. Rustic is not enough to describe the rickety but charming space Botin resides in. Angular, steep staircases, tight quarters, and a hop skip from Plaza Mayor brings all types here. First off, the owner is phenomenal. At 11 pm there was a wait. He looks at me and says Ill see you in 45 min. Doesn't write anything down, doesn't say anything else. We go out and hit up some Jamon as a pre meal and come back 40 min later. Owner sees me, has someone bring us beverages and snacks and then a few min later, we're seated. Can you tell he's been doing this all his life? We are led to a back room that is actually behind the kitchen, which we have to walk through, greeting all the cooks on the way. We're seated with all Spaniards. Was this luck, or did we exude something that told him we were here for serious eating? I know there were a ton of tourists here but not in this room. Score We're greeted by our server and as it's nearing midnight, and we've already devoured a great deal of various Spanish cured meats beforehand, we had one objective: the roasted suckling pig aka Cochinillo Asado,, which is probably the most famous of their many specialties. Simply roasted in the finest olive oil, herbs, and salt with potatoes, it is unbelievable how tasty this is. I thought, well maybe Ill take some of it back with me as a snack but it was so good that we both finished our portions, and I think we could have eaten more. Now I've had roast pig from many different cultures and this was still revelatory. While exploring the streets of Madrid, we just happened to stumble upon the oldest restaurant in the world and best of all, they were about to open in 5 minutes! We were hungry and decided to wait for them to open and try our hand at a truly unique dining experience. The service here is top notch and it's got a price tag to match. The food isn't amazing, but the atmosphere and service makes up for it. Also, it's the oldest restaurant! You have to go for that reason alone. While in Madrid my wife and I (and our children) wanted to experience the best, highest rated, places and activities that the city had to offer. So we read about Botin in a guide and learned that it was the oldest restaurant in Europe ("officially") and it offered "the most memorable" suckling pig. We had to try it. We walked away rather disappointed. It was fine...but not worth the very expensive pricetag (and we are more than happy to pay handsomely for great meals...but this was not one of them). The restaurant itself was unique...many stories, with so many different rooms and "themes" and a very interesting cave-like basement "cellar" that we dined in. Aspects of it were charming, but the greatness end at the ambience. The service was adequate...certainly not great. The meal was exceedingly expensive for the quality of the food. We tried numerous dishes including the shrimp, lamb and suckling pig. And all were ok...but nothing astounding. While we were pleased to visit this historical restaurant, nothing else stood out, and based upon that, our recommendation would be to dine elsewhere. read more

I don't refer to myself as a "foodie", but I do love to eat and try food I haven't eaten before, and sometimes, take pictures of said food. So I suppose I am probably a foodie. And what self-respecting foodie would not want to eat at one of the world's oldest restaurants? Botin advertises itself as THE oldest restaurant in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records. A quick Google search, however, yields a few other restaurants in the world that are also quite old, so I think the title is probably disputed. What really interested me was that they were still using the same fire wood oven that was built in 1725 when the restaurant first opened. As soon as I walked by the restaurant, while walking around Plaza Mayor, and saw what it was all about, I knew I wanted to eat there. Unfortunately it was all booked that night. They did, however, have tables available the next day, at 8pm - about an hour earlier than normal dinner time in Spain. Put me down, I said. As much as they were able to modernise the building, you can definitely see its age in the way the floor slants, in the general layout of the space, and the smaller sized doorway. Like I mentioned before, the normal dinner time in Spain is around 9pm to 10pm. The restaurant actually does not open until 8pm, the time of our reservation. When we sat down, we quickly noticed that the people at just about every other table around us were all speaking English. Then it quickly became very obvious to me that this restaurant is a tourist trap. Or maybe I should not say tourist "trap", since a tourist trap rips off tourists. I do not think Botin is a rip-off, so I will call it a tourist "favourite". Listed as two of their specialties were the roast baby lamb and roast suckling pig, presumably cooked in that fire wood oven from the 18th century. That's what my wife and I ordered. Me with the pig, she with the lamb. The meats from both dishes were cooked en masse, and then subsequently brought out, carved, and served on individual dishes by the servers. Both dishes were served with potato. They were both very simple dishes, without much in the way of seasoning. Both were good but not exactly very memorable. Now I can say that I've eaten food cooked in a fire wood oven that was built in 1725. But I doubt I will go back to Botin. There are simply a lot of other great restaurants that I would love to try in Madrid that probably makes better tasting dishes. Visited Botin on my recent trip to Madrid, and think that it is a must see for any trip to Madrid. Food was very good. We both had the gazpacho and suckling pig, for dinner. The Gazpacho is much different to what I have been used to in the US, but I think even better!! It was pureed and seemed like maybe cream was added. The gazpacho had the consistency of a bisque. With the soup they offered an addition of fresh chopped cucumber, tomato, green pepper, and croutons. The suckling pig was very good, but think the gazpacho was actually better. The portions were very big. I definitely wasn't able to finish all of the pig. The staff was very friendly and efficient. They have both English and Spanish versions of the menu. I made a reservation on-line before we left for Madrid and recommend doing so, as they were very very busy. There seemed to be a mix of locals and tourist there. read more

Its roasting oven has been the same since then. The food itself is really good and worth the price. The Roasted Pig is so cruchy in the outside yet tender in the inside. Delightful. Their specialty Roasted Suckling Pig(shown here) and their roasted lamb are about 24,80€ and their soup 9€. The Sangria is served by either a full pitcher or half a pitcher and the half that we had was 7,70€. Be warned: they usually expect everyone to order something and not say they are going to split something. . . The Service is magnificent. If Possible you should make a reservation ahead of time just in case. Even then, they told me the wait time was about 35 minutes yet I was seated in less than 10 so again, great service. The food is delightful. The gazpacho was smoky and the garlic egg soup has wonderful taste but a bizarre texture. The lamb and suckling pig were tremendous. This is the oldest restaurant in continuous operation in the world. It is in a beautiful old building, and has very professional, old fashioned waiters. The menu is very meat-intensive. We started with a pitcher of very good sangria. Followed that with excellent gazpacho. We shared to main courses, the roast suckling pig and the roast baby lamb. We also ordered the sautéed mushrooms with peas on the side. The pig was delicious, with crackling skin and soft, fatty, delicate and delicious meat. The lamb was ok. There is something to dining at the oldest restaurant in the world - their menu is to go with it. Dining here is like taking a trip back in time, when meal time was a tradition and an affair. Think white table cloth service - and a rustic menu to match. There are no fancy gels or cooking techniques, just simple dishes. Entrees: Botin salad (lettuce, tomato, egg, chicken, thinly sliced jamon, beetroot, the best green olives I've ever eaten in the world, asparagus, sliced potato, artichokes, dressed in olive oil and LOTS of salt (which somehow works). Chicken consumme - not much to say here, consistent with expectations. Mains: Baby squids cooked in own ink with rice - this dish did not look appetising at all. It was the whole squid dumped in a bath of its own ink juices with some soggy rice. What I will say to their credit though is they nailed the cooking of the squid completely - perfect execution of texture. My issue is with not cleaning it setting up the baby squids properly so there was not that gritty texture of the ink/cartilage. The dish was served with this garlic/toast cracker - honestly dipped in the squid ink sauce, was magic. My recommendation would be to abandon the rice that added nothing to the dish - add more of those toasted bread slices instead! Clean up the squid by making them easier to eat - it would have been a disaster for anyone wearing light colours or white as it is impossible not to get sauce on your person with the ink being everywhere. House speciality roasted pork - crackling skin achieved without scoring the skin which is quite clever, meat was tender and flavoursome. Served with literally 3 peeled, boiled & lightly roasted potatoes. The portion sizes are quite decent - do not overreach like we did and order an entree plus a main. The salad is basically a meal in itself. The restaurant basically would get 5 stars if-but-for they modernised their menu. It's the difference between good & great which is lacking. I am astonished and extremely disappointed by how much discrimination there is towards Asians here. Very overt and upfront racism. My family and I made a reservation at Botin restaurant for dinner. We got there and a waiter pointed us to a table in a very cramped room when half of the tables in the restaurant were empty in a rude manner. At first I was like okay maybe it's because they're busy, but nope. It was clear and pure hatred towards Asians. The waiters put all the Asians in one tiny area. White customers were all given better seats and tables. We asked if we could sit somewhere else and before we could give a reason (a family member has claustrophobia and panic disorder), they flatly said no. We tried to get a waiter's attention to order food because no one came for more than 30 min. At one point, three waiters saw us, but instead of approaching, they glared and ignored us. The table next to us who was seated before us and also Asians didn't get their main food for more than 1.5 hrs. Ridiculous. And the audacity to ask for a tip when they discriminated us. Absolutely not. Also, contrary to what the others have said about the food, it was okay. Nothing really special. Their specialty pig dish was mediocre and kind of overpriced based on the portion. The only good thing about the dish was the crispy skin. Don't really recommend. There are better restaurants in Madrid. read more

It was our last night in Madrid and final leg of our Europe trip, so I really wanted to eat at this place that was Guinness World record of being the oldest restaurant in the world. For our entrees I ordered the clams Botin while my sister ordered the grilled garlic shrimp. It was an 1115p reservation so we weren't too hungry since we had a light meal around 6p. We were seated in the first room right when you enter the restaurant. The building and first room felt pretty amazing, it really felt like a lot of history was around you. The pitcher of sangria arrived in a small painted pitcher rather than the glass pitchers I'm used to. When our dishes arrived the serving dishes also felt like they had some history to them. The food wasn't the best that I've had, it was just ok to be honest. A little pricey compared to the other restaurants we've tried but it is definitely an experience. After the meal the maitre d advised to look around and not to miss the downstairs cave area. I'm so glad I looked around, this is part of the experience, walking around the dining rooms walking downstairs in the basement/ cave area peeking into the kitchen area. There was also a band (not sure if that's the proper term) walking around performing. Overall it was a great experience, perfect way to end our last night in Europe and so glad to have been able to experience this, just don't expect it to be the most amazing food you've had. read more

Just stick with the roasted suckling pig and lamb. That's what they are known for. It's a fun event to go to the oldest restaurant in the world. I saw some people order steak and thought to myself, why? read more
