**CASH ONLY** first : this is an Indonesian restaurant but it's not completely Halal because the menu is full of Chinese Indonesian dishes that are also familiar for Singaporeans and Malaysians. Borneo (Kalimantan in Bahasa Indonesia) is the name of an island in Indonesia. My mom was born there and grew up there, and she said that the specialty dishes in Borneo restaurant are actually very close to the ones the Chinese Indonesians serve back in her hometown. She even said that it's better than the ones in Jakarta! My favorite is their nasi campur, and sometimes when I miss bakmi I will order the bakmi ayam. The ayam goreng muda is good too! Also sate ayam! Also the coto buntut! I think Nasi rendang is better at other places though. I have brought many non-Indonesians to this restaurant and they always crave for more, and get excited when I bring them to-gos to special gatherings at their houses. They also have iced-milo and iced crysanthemum tea which I think are very much indo/singapore/malay drink to have while eating a meal. Waiters are very friendly and busy! It's better during weekdays, but weekends are not so bad either. Sometimes waiter forget to give you napkins or such but please don't be such a baby complaining over unnecessary things. You are an adult and you can ask for something if you need it. There's a parking structure in the back that allows you to park for up to 4 hrs, and street parking is also available. There's blockheads and other places around for dessert if you are not satisfied with the portions. They are cheap for a meal but portions are larger somewhere else. For me one dish is enough but my brother almost always finish 2 or at least one and a half. Owners are super nice! I've been searching for some good roti prata with curry since I had some really good roti in Singapore a few years ago and this place is nearly identical to it! the roti is flaky, crunchy, and buttery and pairs well with the curry dip they provide. I highly recommend it despite it being so pricey (2 pieces for about 10 dollars). I also tried their Singaporean laksa and it's AMAZING and a good bang for your buck! it's about 12 dollars but you get a LOT out of it. I ordered take out and it came with a tall plastic container with the curry laksa soup, 2 big shrimps, large slices of fish cake, and lots of fried tofu! the noodles were packed separately in a smaller container with cooked bean sprouts. the soup smells really good and it's packed with flavor and spices. I think they might use coconut milk because it smells like curry but also very fragrant. The parking is pretty convenient for take-out. if you're coming from the direction of the Edwards theater, pass by Borneo a bit and turn into the parking lot in the back on the second alleyway (the first one is the exit and it's one-way). Mm good Indonesian food, especially their noodle soups. Rustic looking restaurant that is pretty narrow but the food was good. I got the Kalimantan flat rice noodle soup ( KWE TIAU KUAH KALIMANTAN ) and it was delicious! The soup was flavorful (although not spicy enough but it's okay because they had chili sauce on the side and I just like really spicy food) and it was filled with noodles, shrimp, meatballs, veggies and most importantly an egg! All noodle soup dishes should always come with an egg. The food tasted good and authentic. The service was good. The atmosphere was homey. Nice little find for homestyle indo/Malaysian food. Their fried kuay teow was delicious ... a bit more "char" would've completed this dish. My laksa was flavourful - only criticism was the corn kernels in the dish (ha!), nasi kumpur with beef rendang was really good and a very big serving. Cendol drink tasted just like home! Service was fast and efficient. Our server took the time to explain the different types of dishes and noodle options which came with them. It's a small venue so expect a line. Ensure your whole group is present as they usually won't seat you unless everyone is there. After visiting Malaysia a handful of times, I can tell you that their noodle soups is a mixture of amazing flavors. a mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian all made into a delicious wholesome broth. Ordered Nasi Lemak and beef rendang. Both arrived at room temperature through delivery service but tasted delicious. Lots of rice and wished there was more meat but very filling. Rendang was tender and the shrimp paste chili peanut sauce is addicting! With the rendang came with an hard boiled soy sauce like egg, one piece fried tofu, steamed cabbage, 2-3 chunks of beef, sweet potatoe chunks, and the peanut sauce with a huge scoop of rice. It's amazing that I've never noticed this small place given that I'm this area so much. The only reason I came across this place was because it was next to M Cremery and seemed pretty busy when I passed by it. Well today, this restaurant popped up in my head and I decided to come by and give it a try! Parking is plentiful as you can park in the structure behind it. Upon walking in, I was amazed at how small and narrow the restaurant was; but it definitely had a certain cafe feel to it. There was only one server and he was very polite and attentative. Instead of looking through their menu, we decided to go with their Mie Kiecil Hokkian since they had a large picture of it in front of their menu, so I assumed it was a popular seller. It did take a little longer to make my food when I thought it would, but the server was apologetic and told me that it would be ready soon, +1 for service. After a few more minutes, my bowl of noodles was finally ready! It looked like an alternative version of japanese ramen minus the brothe and it came with a bowl of soup/brothe that tasted like miso soup. The noodles had your various toppings of meat and salted egg for added flavor. The noodle itself already comes with some brothe on the bottom so I wasn't really sure what the bowl of soup was for. Although the noodles was good, I had to add some of their hot sauce to really give it a kick. I really recommend adding the hot sauce because it really made a difference from a ordinary meal to a very delicous one. Cash only so kind of bummer, but overall the food and service was good, so I will be back in the future when I get tired of eating pho or ramen. So I've passed by this place a countless amount of times before but never really gave any consideration to try this place. It's a fairly small place that is easily missable if you aren't paying attention. It's located right next to M's Creamery on Garfield. So enough about this place's location, let's talk about their food. So this place specializes in Borneo food, as it's part of the name. I had the #1 today, which was the Mie Kecil Hokkien, which in translation, I would assume it's the Hokkien style thin noodles. I had never heard of this type of noodle dish before, but basing it on the pictures provided in the menu, I assumed that this would be a safe order. And it turns out that the Hokkien style thin noodles was indeed a safe order. For $8.50, you get a decent amount of noodles and vegetables. And of course, their meat proportion is definitely above average. Their BBQ red pork was thinly sliced and had little to not fat in them. Noodles tasted pretty fucking good and I really loved every bite of this. They serve the broth on the side, which can be used with the noodles. A small location with a wait. Parking isn't too bad as it's right next to a public parking location. This restaurant's main concept is the home-style cooking behind it. While it's noticeably home-cooking styled, I didn't think the food blew me away like how I would imagined. First, the service. Despite a wait of about 30 minutes, I still wanted to wait and try the place out. When the waitress called my name, we followed her in to be seated and without saying anything, just left the menus. Sure, it's busy and it appears she is the only one working all the tables. When she came back to take our order, my brother asked which item was more popular and she said they are both popular, when asked which one she would recommend, she recommends both (lol). Anyways, very curt service. Food, we ordered their Borneo Fried Flat Rice noodles, Borneo Shrimp laksa noodle soup, and one order of roti curry. Surprisingly, the roti curry came out last and halfway through our entree. The fried flat rice noodles wasn't anything special and it bears a close resemblance to the Chinese/Cantonese stir-fry ho-fun. The accompaniment meats and vegetables were different, but the taste was pretty much the same. In terms of wok'ed, it was lacking a bit more behind it, but decently done. The laksa noodle soup came out looking very appealing. The taste is very rich, but that was about it. I felt it lacked the unique spiciness laksa has when mixed with coconut milk. In addition, while the base was rich, it didn't have any defining flavors behind it - for example, shrimp, turmeric, lemongrass, galanga, etc. Lastly, the roti was actually pretty nice. The curry that accompanied it was actually just a sweet rendition of the laksa curry. I think palm sugar was added to the roti's curry to make it sweet instead of spicy. Overall, I still like them despite the food didn't come out to be what I'm expecting. For that price-value, it isn't terrible and I wouldn't mind going again to try something else. read more

I had this huge craving for laksa this week & finally ended up at Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine tonight! The last time I went there was a bit of a wait but (probably since it was a weeknight) my parents and I were seated immediately, though the restaurant was by no means empty. The restaurant itself is pretty small and so I think it'd be better to go with smaller groups! For the food, we shared roti, laksa mee, nasi rendang, & this one dry noodle that I just can't seem to remember the name of right now. The roti were a great start to the meal; these came out super hot, beautifully flaky on the outside, and soft on the inside and were perfect dipped into the sauce. The laksa mee was really good as well, with a flavorful soup and a nice chew on the noodles! Unfortunately, the shrimps were quite over cooked but every other aspect of the noodles were on point! The dry noodle dish was my mom's favorite dish of the night and had a light sweetness to it that tastes so good with some of that sauce they have at each table - I'm not sure what it was but it gave the dish a little tangy kick. The best part of this noodle in my opinion would have to be that red pork, SO DARN GOOD!!!!! Lastly, I'm not normally a big fan of rice dishes but I'd have to say that my favorite for tonight would have to be the nasi rendang. Yes the meat was a little over cooked and therefore a bit tough, but all the other elements on the dish just tasted so beautiful mixed together. I especially loved those spicy peanuts! Were originally in the area for Hot Red Bus since I had a Groupon deal that was expiring soon but I had forgotten to check which days they were closed. Labor Day happened to fall on a Monday and thus, Hot Red Bus was closed. Then we noticed that Foo Foo Tei was next door so we headed there for lunch, but we were never acknowledged for more than 5+ when we walked in and there were only 2 tables occupied. So third time's a charm, my mom had remembered there being a Mayalsian restaurant nearby but we couldn't find it. It seems Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine had moved across the street. The funny thing is, Borneo Kalimantan Cuisine had been bookmarked as a place "to try" on my Yelp account and was happy that it was nearby that we ended up dining here for lunch. We were greeted right when we stepped into the restaurant and seated promptly! Great change of customer service as compared to the non-existent one at Foo Foo Tei. The restaurant is long and narrow. Due to limited seating, not sure how long the wait could be on the weekends during busy hours. Laksa Mee Rendang Loved the flavors of the Laksa Mee, especially the coconut milk base curry! All the flavors melded together so well. Both my mouth and my stomach were very happy. It was so spicy but oh so good! Since we weren't super hungry, so we had enough leftovers from both the Laksa Mee and the Rendang. The Rendang is a rice dish with different meats and vegetables. A bit like Korean ban chan served with rice. Upon receiving our food, we could tell that the chefs pride themselves with their food presentations. I love how each dish is presented, very colorful! We were also surprised at how attentive the servers were. When the Laksa Mee came out first, the server asked where to place it. We said the middle was fine and he immediately said he would grab 2 bowls for us to share! How intuitive! We didn't need to ask and he thought of it right away. Granted, some aren't that thoughtful but it was a very pleasant surprise. Another surprise was how clean this restaurant was! One could tell that they either had just recently moved in (a year or so) as compared to some Asian restaurants that just feel like grease. Note: This restaurant is CASH ONLY, as are most Asian restaurants. Also, don't let the check confuse you like it did for us. Right when I looked at the check, I was confused as to why each entree cost much more than the menu price. Figured it out, they wrote down the price of each entree with tax and added the two entrees together for the total. No breakdowns here. Not a fan of that because if you don't remember the cost of each dish, you need to ask for a menu and one sometimes double checks the menu item cost. Now need to remember the menu item cost and then the tax to make sure that the total is correct. Not that I want to doubt their calculations but the cleaner in breakdown it is, the better clarity for the paying customer. P.S. I really enjoyed how it was mostly families who came to eat together.
