Normally, I don't write reviews (as a busy working mom of a toddler..time is precious). However, my recent experience with attorney Andrew Shaffer was exceptional - above and beyond what I could have expected from an initial consultation. I recently had an initial consultation with Attorney Shaffer (following social distancing & mask of course) on behalf of my father. I was left thoroughly impressed and grateful for the following reasons: 1) Not once did he try to "market" or "sell" his service...which sometimes I get the sense when you contact some attorneys. 2 ) He was very patient - really took the time to review the facts related to my father's case and explained them to me in a way that I can understand. 3) At several points - he even frankly let me know that "given how close to the end the case is..it's not worth it for my father to pay him the fee. Mr. Borah turned out to be an incompetent attorney in my worker's compensation case. He neglected to ask the company for all of my lost wages, he was also inconsiderate and rude to me. During my time off work, he refused to continue to help me with my treatments. I was in a lot of pain and he did not seem to care. Brett Borah is a great and he doesn't know it but he has answered many of my workers compensation questions on Avvo since 2013 to date as I have had two unfortunate accidents. I am Pro Per and wouldn't have it any other way but if I were going to get an attorney, it would definitely be Brett Borah. The problem with workers compensation attorneys is time, as many of them have a case loads and is not willing to sit in court all day for a measly $100 mileage reimbursement check. The insurance company knows that applicant attorney only get paid at the end of the claim and knows they can mess with you because your attorney is not going to go to court for that. So, the idea is to get you to settle out of frustration. Pro per's who can comprehend the easy laws of workers compensation (compared to civil) and has time and energy, would do better going it on their own. As a pro per, I can go in the room with the other attorneys while their poor clients are waiting in the waiting room. Sadly, I have heard attorneys agree to settle an injured workers case for cheap in order to get a better deal on a more profitable case. I wish I had the success stories with a Workmen's Compensation settlement that I am reading about posted here. Mine is NOT a success story at all. My career and life has been ruined by an unfair firing of me by an injury that occurred with US Vision located inside JC Penney Optical in San Bruno. The district manager of the store ran into my foot with a loaded store dolly. I was given ten days off to recover by a doctor and was fired for not going to work in those ten days. Mr. Borah was my attorney from 1998 until 2010. At the time I was fired I was manager of the busiest store in the region and my commission for the month was very high. I didn't receive my commissions and was not allowed back in the store and lost a very nice leather case with all my paperwork in it. I would have earned about $45,000 that year. Instead I am forced to still be working at a miserable part time job standing for six hours for $11.00 an hour. My foot still hurts especially in damp weather. But anyway, after fighting this case for twelve years, I was exhausted and took a $10,000 lousy settlement.
