This one was about 30 minutes one way off the main road and was isolated from much else. There is a cute inn very nearby and a small town with an ice cream shop and a few stores and art galleries. It's charming and if you are staying anywhere nearby, this is a great spot to come and visit during the day, go through the museum and enjoy the grounds. We visited later after it was closed at 5pm so, parking was free, and we were free to roam around on the rocks and enjoy the views. This lighthouse by far had some of the best rock and views. Very pretty and you can get up close and personal with the lighthouse here.

The introductory video is informative, and the museum hosts a number of artifacts excavated from the site. The ruins themselves are not much to look at, but enough information is provided to explain the history of the site to answer many questions that a visitor may have. Overall, even though it is a bit out of the way, I would recommend a stop at this historic site if you have time.

This is one of those lighthouses seen around Southport. There is signs throughout sayng private property and there is a driveway/road, but again don't go there. It is not for public access. This structure dates to 1875 and is a private residence for some time. The white tower is 39 feet tall and has a range of 9 nautical miles. It marks the mouth of the Sheepscot River and access to the town of Wiscasset. The lighthouse is entirely on private property that is not open to the public. Clear "no trespassing signs" at the entrance to the driveway warn you not to continue exploring. There is a small parking area at a nearby beach and you can get some decent pictures from there. Carrying Western Avenue aka State Route 27 over the Townsend Gut and connecting Southport with…read moreBoothbay Harbor, this swing bridge was built in 1939. It received an update to the mechanical portions in 1988 and then construction repairs with a repainting in 2024. It is the last thru truss swing bridge in Maine. The swing span measures 178 feet long by 22 feet curb-to-curb and there are two additional fixed approach spans that are 100 feet and 86 feet long. We were here in the afternoon during off season on the way to the Hendricks Head Lighthouse, so we did not have the opportunity to see the opening of the bridge. I would imagine that's quite the sight. The bridge is quite narrow with only one lane in each direction and a narrow raised pedestrian lane that does not have a barrier. We were staying nearby in the area, so it was an easy drive here. This park is small, but has such a rich history. The guys working at the park were super friendly, and one gave us some fun facts about the lighthouse before heading up to the top! Speaking of, going up to the top is really neat. It's a tad bit scary and has a steep, spiral staircase, but has some great views once you get up there. There's also a little room with more on the history. Outside, you can climb around on the rocks to have a great viewing spot of the ocean. You need to come visit this place if you are nearby!

Despite living here most of my life, I'm not sure I had ever really seen puffins, so I was delighted to find there was a place in Boothbay offering tours (I guess I kind of assumed they were always much further up the coast). Cap'n Fish's Cruises family-friendly, accessible 2.5 hour long cruise to see the puffins on Eastern Egg Rock is a delight. The captain and the representative from the National Audubon Society do a fantastic job at pointing out any/all coastal wildlife that they see ("at your 6 o'clock there's a seal", "just flying by from your 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock are two puffins") from start to finish of the cruise. They also add facts about the islands and information about the lighthouses you'll pass, while adding a dash of local lore here and there too! You'll learn so, so much about the Audubon Society's work at re-establishing a puffin colony here in Maine, how they're helping other bird colonies around the world, and lots of information about Maine's seabirds. When you get to Eastern Egg Rock, they'll maintain a safe distance and circle twice so that way both sides of the boats can take pics. Some notes: 1) It's probably worth it to pay the extra 15% for priority boarding so you can pick the seat you want. Our cruise left at 10am, and by 9am the line was *enormous*. I didn't think I'd get to sit outside on the top of the boat (the seats are configured in two rows of four with an aisle down the center). 2) There are snacks and drinks for purchase. You can also bring your own food, but not your own beverages (unless it's a water bottle, I think). 3) Don't forget your sunscreen and sunglasses, well-fitting hats and a hoodie just in case it's cooler on the water (and, for the from-awayers: it's usually ten degrees cooler on the water). 4) I didn't need my ticket, I just gave them my name when I boarded. 5) The staff was EXCEPTIONAL: again, from start to finish, they were friendly, helpful, informative, patient. Really, really impressed! The whole thing was just a lovely experience.

Super must do - a 1 to 1/2 hour scenic cruise to partake whenever visiting Boothbay Harbor, ME…read more Unfortunately, do to a September arrival, did not view any parrafin birds nor ventured onto the Atlantic ocean for whale watching, but did expect to and saw seals, dolphins, seagulls, as well as three (3) famous lighthouses. Always best to sit on top deck and in the stearn (rear) for a 270° view throughout. However, remember to bring a hat, apply suntan lotion and depending on the temperature bring a windjacket.
