History
Established in 2005.
As an educator, I recognized that too many kids were struggling to learn to read well. To help, I earned my doctorate to learn how I could do better for the families I served. I learned that teaching foundational skills before kids enter formal schooling was essential, and that parents need to be equipped to support their children from home. So, I created Book Bums. It's a place that supports literacy learning for families.
We are a coffee shop that serves delicious treats, creates fun-focused learning environments, hosts reading and writing events for the whole family, and is a quaint space to relax and get some work done.
We also began tutoring students who have not received the foundational skills we know to be essential when raising excellent readers and spellers. We make raising readers FUN!
Our cafe, serving a delicious, light lunch menu is up, and we're looking forward to serving you very soon!
Meet the Business Owner: Dr. Christina W.
I’m a passionate teacher of reading who enjoys creating hands-on experiences that make learning fun! In my 20th year of serving (a total of 30 years) in public schools, I recognized that I had not been adequately equipped to teach kids to read and spell well. I saw far too many students struggling and feeling dumb, and I knew that what I was doing wasn’t enough. (I wish I had known, as a beginning teacher, what I know now!) In my doctoral research, I finally learned where my instruction was failing my students. I spent years creating engaging, sticky lessons featuring quality children’s literature and systematic, synthetic phonics instruction that would (Finally!) teach kids (and their parents) the code upon which our language is based. I left classroom teaching to expand my impact in the quaint little cafe that I created called Book Bums. Whether your kids are just learning to read, struggling to learn to read, or are soaring readers, at Book Bums . . . We Make Raising Readers FUN!.
