My wife and I were here on a Gate1 tour, with this being an Optional Medieval Tour. Braga, with roots reaching back over 2,000 years to the ancient Roman Empire and the religious center of Portugal. Braga has a very impressive "Bom Jesus do Monte" (Good Jesus of the Mount) sanctuary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, that you can reach - either through a Baroque stairway with lots of sculptures and 573 zigzagging steps (aka the Sacred Way), or on a 19th century funicular. We chose to ascend via the oldest funicular powered by ... water-balancing and counter balancing of 1,580 gallons of mountain water. The cars run at the same time in opposite directions; the one coming down the hill is weighed down with water, powering the lighter one up the track. It took only a few minutes for us to reach the top - the sanctuary is a pilgrimage site. The baroque staircase that leads up to the church, symbolically representing the Christian idea of the journey of life and ascension to heaven. 'Life's a journey, not a destination'. At the top is a big church, which houses beautiful religious art and intricate gilded woodwork. In addition, there are various chapels. The park surrounding the sanctuary is a peaceful retreat, with landscaped gardens, tranquil fountains, and grottoes for exploration. It was beautiful to wander around and see the surrounding sights. I decided I would walk down the 573 zigzagging steps, 17 landings, numerous fountains, statues, grottoes, and friezes staircase to see what was on each level. On each level, there were scenes of the various steps that lead to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, Unfortunately, I didn't realize it until I was down several levels. It was beautiful at every level, and interesting to look back up. To me, this was the biggest attraction in Portugal.

One of the iconic churches of Portugal located near Braga about an hour from Porto. Take the walk up the impressive stairs taking your time to admire the view and statuary and fountains along the way. For us it was about 10 minutes. At the top there are beautiful gardens and even a large park where people might be picnicking. The inside of the church was recently restored so it is bright and gleaming. There is no cost to enter as it is still an active church. A very peaceful and beautiful spot to contemplate life.

This is a stunning church to see and you can easily spend hours here. It is in the city of Braga which is fairly close to the city of Guimarães and about 45 minutes from the city of Porto. We we did a tour yesterday which visited the church amongst other places however this was definitely the highlight. The inside decor is stunning however the outside is even more beautiful. There are tons of statues and water fountains all surrounding it. There are a lot of stairs to climb too but each level you can get great views from. The city views looking out are remarkable as well. There is a cable car that runs up and down at the side of the cathedral. The cable car is interesting because it is powered by water. There is also a gazebo to the left of the cathedral with a beautiful garden that you can explore.

The exterior of the church shows a beautiful tile mosaic, added in the early 20th century, depicting scenes relating to the founding of the Carmelite Order. This is not a well- know church as many other in Porto but it definitely deserves a visit. It was classified as a National Monument on May 3, 2013, together with the adjacent Carmelite Church. In recent years, the Order of Mount Carmel sought to open its vast heritage to the public. Initially he opened the "Casa Escondida", considered by local guides as the "Narrowest House in the city of Porto" , and one of the narrowest in the country. Little by little, new spaces were opened, and nowadays visits to the Order of Carmo Tourist Circuit are available. For €3.5 you can visit the House, Church, Catacombs (small), Noble Hall, Hall of Paraments and Sacristy through Casa Escondida, allowing a glimpse of the heritage of the city. This visit is possible from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am and 6 pm; on Mondays it starts at 12 pm and ends at 6 pm. During mess time such visit cannot be conducted.

The day of the Nativity of the Virgin is the high point of the feasts in honour of Our Lady of Remedies. It usually include fireworks, musical shows and various sports. The Procession of the Triumph, with its richly adorned paraders, is a highpoint. Already during the Middle Ages catholic worship was celebrated there, in an old hermitage dedicated to Santo Estevão that was erected in 1361. At risk of collapsing, it was demolished in the 16th century and the construction of a new hermitage in the same spot was started, by the Bishop of Lamego, where an image of the Virgin and Child was placed. Worship of St. Stephen was thus progressively replaced by Marian Devotion. In 1750, the construction of the present sanctuary began, and was only finished in 1905. The monumental Baroque staircase with 686 steps, yep you need to climb that to have access to the sanctuary is divided over several levels, punctuated by sculptural elements, such as statues of the kings, the backrests of the eight fountains (among which the Remédios, by Nicolau Nasoni) and various allegorical representations. Half way is the Chapel of Desterro. Inside the temple is Rocaille in style and entirely dedicated to Marian iconography: on the main altar in gilded carving, in the altarpieces dedicated to the Virgin's parents, in the three stained glass windows with images of Our Lady of the Conception, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Annunciation, and in the tiles of the Conimbrigan artist Miguel Costa that represent key moments in Mary's life. The tomb of the founder of the sanctuary, Canon Jose Teixeira Pinto, is at the entrance of the nave. Definitely worth visiting and gorgeous view of the Valley!

These two churches nearly blend together. Built in the 17th century, the Carmelitas side on the left for nuns is classic baroque. And unlike the Carmo side on the right for monks, entry was free when we visited making it a convenient pit stop between other historic sites. There is even a 3 ft wide narrow house between both churches that traditionally segregated Carmelite monks from nuns. Before going in, admire the elegant azulejo blue tiled wall on one side and the magnificent bronze Fountain of the Lions nearby, thought to be the inspiration for Harry Potter's Gryffindor crest. Inside the church feels quiet and intimate with decor featuring soft gold accents and traditional woodwork. Everything felt restrained except for the gilded main altar with intricate woodwork and a tiered mantlepiece dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Virgin Mary). Skip it or hit it? It's a quick and free visit in this area of Porto worth exploring.
