We went to Bold on a Friday evening. I had no idea what this place was, I had not heard of it before.We didn't have a reservation, so we sat in "soft seating", near the bar. The bartender was also our server and she was so friendly and attentive, even with serving other tables and bar tending. I ordered the seafood trio and that was to die for. The scallops were perfectly cooked and I couldn't get enough of the risotto cake. I don't normally order dessert, but I did order the petite peanut butter cups, which were amazing. I haven't eaten such good food in a long time, and the service was unbeatable. This was a great find in Portage. read more

Easily my favorite restaurant in town now. I love love love bold! The food is always amazing, especially their dinner specials. Have had some of the best fish here. The sauces they make are just something else. Had one special I actually cannot stop thinking about with a cider glaze that was an incredible meal I wish it was on the menu. After a year of refusing to go as the owner was rude, I stepped into the restaurant again. The food was very tasty and somewhat imaginative. OK wine selection that matches the KZoo locale. Has a solid local following as everyone seems to know one another. Would like the bar staff to be more attentive and personable. Ihave trained people on customer service in order to make more money and they could use some help. Had the beef wellington special. Expensive at $18 fro a 3-4 oz portion butthe meat was cooked perfectly. Thought it looked more like a roll than a puff pastry though. Also had flatbread with an egg on top-that was good. read more

"Bold" is not a misnomer. Dishes really explode with flavor. This is absolutely my favorite place to dine in the Kalamazoo area, especially on Monday nights when small plates are reduced by 40 percent. The tenderloin tip small plate, served in a lush bed of creamy peppercorn sauce and topped with crispy fried onions, blows us away every time. The meat is always a perfect cut, perfectly prepared, the crispy and silky textures are perfect. It just melts in your mouth. I would have a hard time wrapping my mind around the $22 price tag for an appetizer-sized plate on non-Mondays, but we like bang for our buck so Mondays are typically when we go. We also always grab the rich, spicy crab dip, served with crispy bread points. We usually ask our server which of the daily specials they recommend and go with that as well. Around 2 small plates per person typically works out well, and we recommend sharing so you can try more things. Be sure to save room for dessert -- the banana's foster is the ultimate indulgence -- a chocolate-coated ball of butter-pecan ice cream swimming in a sugary sea of hot banana's foster sauce. When I hadn't saved room for dessert on my last birthday visit, our waitress was kind enough to package this to-go for me and put the ice cream ball and hot sauce in separate containers so it would arrive home intact. It was a really nice touch in a place so absolutely known for treating customers like royalty. The manager has visited our table for a chat on virtually every visit. I noticed someone called the service "leisurely," and I totally get why he would think so -- but it is not the fault of the wait staff. My only complaint about Bold is that they present only the drink menu at first and then come take drink orders before presenting guests with a food menu. As someone who exclusively makes beverage choices based on what I plan to eat, I've always found this vexing, and I imagine it also makes things awkward for guests who don't imbibe alcohol. Starting tables off with full food and drink menus would probably speed up table time by a good 15-20 minutes and maybe even allow for an extra seating (which would be especially welcome on Mondays and weekends when it can be difficult to get a reservation unless placed in advance). Service is generally rock-solid -- we've been especially blown away by Jes, but we're biased since she's a friend (but her solid recitations of the specials du jour without glancing at notes is truly impressive by any standard!) Went on a Monday which is the 40% off night. We're not from around here so totally a chance find. It's in a strip mall and not what we were expecting but that doesn't matter. We were just here to eat and not to be seen. We started with martinis and one of us liked them and the other didn't. If you order the cold martini be prepared for a dirty martini. Since Monday is 40% off the small plate night we only ordered small plates. Pork belly and flautas came out first. They were off menu nightly specials and Carrie sold them well. The flautas were spicy and flavorful. The pork belly tender and tangy although the rice it was paired with has coconut in it and we didn't care for the flavor combo. Carrie is friendly but firm. No small talk with her but she'll give you her opinion on food and be professional. Next up was goat cheese and sausage dip and the wasabi tacos. They were both amazing. The tacos were eye watering but no too spicy. We both loved our meals and would come back on a minute. read more

Good, but not great. It was our first time eating at Bold and unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment. The best item of the night was the wedge salad, if you like spice you will love it, delicious! But, everything else not so much. For the premium prices they charge, especially on the large plates, one would expect the food to be great and instead it is just middle of the road good. My husband had the cowboy, it had good flavor......but, nothing special and he said the steak had a lot of gristle. My mother had the white fish and the fish was bit dry, the breading was too heavy. I had two small plates, the white fish (cooked like my mom's, dry) and wasabi steak tacos that were way too heavy on the wasabi....yikes! Would not recommend! As far as ambiance goes, it has a pleasant atmosphere, but it was very noisy, the restaurant is in need of some sound dampening. Service was friendly, but average in service and slow. Water glasses were not kept full and my mom was drinking ice tea and it was never refilled. All in all, Bold left a lot to be desired. read more

A few caveats right off the bat. Service is, as it could most charitably be described as, "leisurely". Expect a two-hour meal at minimum. The options are pricey, although on Monday nights they do offer 40% off small plates. And it is most certainly not catered towards kids. However, the food is prepared well for the most part. I sampled numerous options, including the Bold Shrimp and Risotto Fritters which were both truly excellent. The Wasabi Tacos and Chicken and Waffles were good but contained flaws. The tacos were bland save the wasabi. The chicken and waffles contained the same mistake that many restaurants make when they reinterpret chicken waffles. The waffles and chicken are drowned in a maple bacon jam that destroys the crispiness of the chicken and overpowers the flavor. Not fatal, but frustrating none the less. I would recommend Bold, but only in certain situations. read more

Every time I've been to BOLD I've been extremely impressed. I really love their chopped salad. I also found out that they get all their ingredients local! I am also very impressed with their wine selection. They also have a wide selection of martinis (but those aren't my drink of choice.) I also was SO happy to see that they also have their wine selection from Michigan! (My personal favorite, Chateau Grand Traverse.... yummo!) I can guarantee that no matter what item I choose on their menu I won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed everything at this restaurant. What a gem tucked in the corner of a plaza in the heart of Texas Corners. I only come here on Monday nights for half off small plates because the normal prices are very expensive for small plates. Order two or maybe three of you are really hungry. Each dish is inventive and always scrumptious. Went to BOLD for our anniversary last night. Once again an outstanding dinner. Comfortable, relaxed, waiter Chris is a true professional and the food was perfect. My wife had a fish dinner-apuka I believe. Delicious. I had the scallops small plate that was a special and also terrific. Salad, desserts, drinks, even the after dinner coffee was memorable. Whenever I have some extra cash I like going to Bold for dinner -always. The staff are so friendly and really touch hard on great customer service. The food is always great and there are always extra employees around to grab your plate right when you are finished so it's not just sitting in front of you. Great place... little... out of the way... but nice modern cool atmosphere. Menu had a number of things I wanted to try. You can order small plate, tapas style, but my wife and I went for one small plate to share as appetizer, and a regular size dinner... and of course a shared desert. Appetizer was grilled salmon... perfect. Salad was chopped and excellent... unique. Dinner was beef tenderloin... cooked perfect and really good. Desert was a kind of turtle sundae, very good. I'm going again (and again, and again), but since I've only been once so far I'll reserve that fifth star... but I think it's coming. read more

I'm giving four stars due to past experiences. I went with my husband last night, and we ordered the white fish (asked for Brussels sprouts- denied for the first out of 10 visits ish), the salmon, and a side of Brussels sprouts. The Brussels sprouts were quite hard/raw. I have a tendency to cook veggies al dente. These were raw. After a young lady asked if she could help us with anything (our meals were finished except this $14.00 side), and we mentioned our raw side. The owner came over and took them to be cooked longer with zero issue. They came back to us okay. I would have ordered another $10.00 drink except our server still never came back. We ordered desserts to go, and my husband had to spell it our for the server we'd like to pay right away since one of the deserts came with ice cream. Server was just kind of creepy, honestly. This visit would have earned them a three star at best. I've been here quite a bit, and can't give them too low. I hope this visit was anomaly. read more
