I was in the area on business and first limited my Yelp search to restaurants that were near where I was staying -- Bold looked promising enough that I didn't bother to search for spots around downtown Kalamazoo. It happened to be a Monday night, which meant half-price small plates and apparently a pretty brisk business ... I came by late in their dinner service, though, so was able to get a table fairly easily. I decided to have a salad and a couple of small plates for dinner -- I chose the chopped salad, their special tenderloin brochette small plate, and the stuffed portabella on the recommendation of my waitress. The chopped salad was just ordinary. I struggle to say what was in it -- iceberg lettuce, cheese, bacon? It really could have used more textural contrast and flavor. Meh. As for the small plates, the special consisted of a skewer of beef tenderloin cooked medium rare served with some sort of white sauce & garnish over a polenta cake. The meat was perfectly cooked and tender, and the polenta cake was perfectly crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside. The sauce and garnish were less successful, primarily due to temperature. The sauce was room temperature and the garnish cold, as if it had just come out of the refrigerator. I found that to be so off-putting that I scraped everything off and just ate the steak alone. Similarly, there were cold grape tomatoes garnishing the stuffed portabella. I ended up eating those tomatoes separately from the portabella, as they were relatively nice and flavorful. The stuffing for the portabella was a mish-mash of too many assertively flavored items that didn't meld at all, and didn't complement the meatiness of the mushroom itself. So, all in all, I found the dishes I tried to be rather disappointing. I'd like to think that it was poor selection on my part, as it did seem to be a nice enough place, with a pleasant atmosphere, competent service, and an almost full dining room with numerous groups of people seemingly enjoying their meals. For me, though, I'm sure I would have been much more disappointed if it hadn't been half-price night. read more

Wow, I was excited to take my dad here for his 80th birthday-BUT they refuse a party of 10, even when I asked for a 6 top and 4 top that we just be next to each other they said NO, i guess they can't handle people talking to other tables. Andy the manager was not helpful, I guess he thinks his restaurant is too good for celebrating a large family. Please think about this the next time u consider this establishment. read more

The exterior is deceiving, I believe they are doing some remodeling but the inside has a nice quiet atmosphere, perfect spot for date night. The whole dinning experience here was phenomenal. The staff was all super nice and the food was amazing. The restaurant is called Bold for a reason because every bite is supercharged with mouthwatering flavor. Just make sure to make reservations in advance or you might not be able to get a table. The has two categories, "small plates" which are like an appetizer, and "big plates" which are like a full entree. For our small plate we ordered the Stuffed Portobello Mushroom, which was super delicious. If you live in the Kalamazoo area I recommend you try this restaurant at least one time. My foodie family went here after my nephew's graduation and we had an awesome evening. The staff was terrific and the chef was attentive. We had a strict vegan in our party and he asked her a few questions about ingredients and spice level and he made a custom dish for her (that was delicious). I've never had elk before and it was great - as was the seafood chowder. We all tried each others' appetizers and main courses. When I get back to Kalamazoo I'll definitely stop in again. No matter when I stop by Bold, I'm always so happy I did. It can be pretty tough to just walk in and get a table, so be sure you plan ahead and make a reservation. Last night luckily my friend and I were able to snag two seats at the bar. The one thing I really appreciate Bold is their employees. They don't have much turn over since I've noticed the bartender and a couple of the waitstaff have been fixtures there for a long time. This goes a long way in my book. Tonight, I opted for an Old Fashioned cocktail. It was prepared perfectly. I also ordered their soup of the day, which was one of the most delicious cream of cauliflower soups I have ever had. I'm not sure what all they added to it, but it sure was good. My friend ordered the scallops special (not the one on the menu) and she shared a hunk of one of the scallops with me and it melted in my mouth. We also shared the arugula & pear salad, again another winner. Bold is an awesome place. I have never had a bad experience here. Just keep in mind it is a little pricey (my bill was just over $24 for drink, soup & 1/2 a salad), but you won't be disappointed. read more

I travel with work and I love going to new restaurants I've never been so I wanted to try Bold. I guess that was a big mistake. I walked in and said it was for a table for one. They looked confused as in they've never seen a person come in for a table of one. The hostess kept looking confused and said I could sit at the bar. I said I did not want to sit at the bar that I wanted a table. She hesitated and then said all her tables were full. She didn't even ask to take my name to wait or nothing all she said was sorry like I couldn't stay. I would not recommend this place to no one. Horrible customer service! read more

Bold is overpriced, average quality and poor service. I've been disappointed in the past , but we thought we'd try it again. 5 minutes before we could order it drink. 10 minutes before we received our drinks. 25 minutes before we received menus. Two orders were wrong with no apologies. The food that arrived was almost as good as I could cook at home. Poor management to let this happen. Our waitress was totally disinterested. We will not be back and I will make sure my friends, relatives, clients know what a poor, over rated and over priced place it is. read more

It's a great conversational piece and also Bc often I may not have the opportunity to return to the area. It allows me the chance to try one of a kind establishments owned and operated by hard-working people living their dream. This place is fantastic. The featured heirloom tomato & beet salad was TO-DIE-FOR! Tomato season is soon coming to an end in Michigan and these were SO JUICY! Real chopped, thick pieces of bacon, too ! Gah! So great! Lollipop Lambchops Small plate. Full of flavor and just right. Petite Peanut Butter Cups. Need I say more?! Perfect size dessert. Just enough to indulge without feeling like you over did it. Always skeptical on restaurants in strip malls but this was the second time this year I was completely floored on how good one could be. From the outside, it almost looked closed but the meal I had there was one of the best. My boyfriend and I meet in Kalamazoo on the weekends and chose to eat at Bold on what we classified as our "date night". Service was great, they start serving diner at 5 but the bar opens at 4 so we arrived early and we're able to have some cocktails. Wine menu was rather underwhelming. Our table was ready at exactly 5 and the service we received was wonderful. Our meal was not rushed and someone who seemed as if he were a manager/owner nicely checked on us which was appreciated. Ambience in general could've been better for the quality of food served however we did enjoy the quiet noise level. We ordered scallops, shrimp special, beef tenderloin, lamb chops, the crab dip, and the Brussels sprouts. THE CRAB DIP AND SCALLOPS WERE PHENOMENOL!! The lamb chops were okay, could've been less fatty and both the Brussels sprouts and tenderloin were just okay. My boyfriend really enjoyed the shrimp special (agreed they were delicious) which was served on a bed of bland cous cous. Overall we really enjoyed our experience and will be back for the dip and scallops! Ps- Didn't appreciate a remark made by the hostess when I called to make reservations. I have been going to Bold since it first opened and have had them cater for functions at my home on multiple occasions. They are truly outstanding and always have the most amazing atmosphere, food, and wait staff. I may be 'walking the fence' here, but the poor reviews due to people not wearing masks (please do some research on this before virtue signaling), please stay home or quietly and respectfully leave the establishment, if you do not agree with their policies. Monday night is half off small plates, and it's AMAZING. This is definitely one of the best places to go in Kalamazoo. The service is always great, the restaurant itself is tastefully decorated, and the food is killer. We've gone for some of their buffets (they do Mother's day and Thanksgiving and probably others), and they're great! The assortment of food is wonderful, and they're always accommodating to vegetarians. The prices are high but not for what you get. I haven't had a bad meal here. Great place for happy hour, for business meetings (this is one of the default places we go when my boss is in town), and for dates. Don't forget to get dessert. This place exceeds our expectations every time that we go. It is well worth the money, as it tends to be a little fancier and higher priced than other restaurants in the area. Any time our parents are in town or we want to impress we definitely go to Bold! Chris is my favorite waiter and the Cosmopolitans are the best in town. This is one of my favorite spots in Kalamazoo but it is definitely off the beaten path. The place is a little small and I would recommend sitting in the bar instead of the dining room because it is so loud in the completely open dining room. The bar has couches and a couple high top tables that they don't reserve so try to get one of those tables as it is much more enjoyable than sitting in your neighbor's lap and participating in their conversation in the dining room. Now to the food. They have a good selection of small plates and a few big plates on their menu. We like the crab dip the best off the small plates. I can't remember the others we ordered since it's been awhile since we have gone there but I do remember that one. We ordered the scallops and shrimp big plate and they were cooked to perfection and spiced very nicely as they had some heat to them. However, the risotto cake that they used to fill the shallow bowl they put the scallops and shrimp in left something to be desired for me. I would have elected to have done without that and left it untouched in the bowl. We also ordered the duck and it was only average. We have definitely had better. The desserts here are also changing and I've had the bread pudding which was good and would recommend. It was nice to see the owner, Shane, circulating every time we have gone here. We absolutely love bold for a special date night. The food is phenomenal, the service is perfect and wonderfully not rushed. I love that! On our last visit we came in for our anniversary and started with a couple of martinis- which are generous pours and they leave the shaker so it's more like 2 martinis. We then ordered the risotto fritters (yum!) and the fried chicken to start. We were able to just sit and chat a while without being bugged to order dinner. When we did order we both went for steaks the bone in ribeye special of the day, and a NY strip. Both were cooked to perfection and well seasoned. We definitely love the steak options here, but would probably be happy with any of the big plates they offer. Because it was our anniversary we each got a dessert on the house! I would absolutely say this is 5 star dining, I did only give 4 stars as our view was of the dumpsters out back. If they could conceal those somehow this would absolutely be a 5 star dining experience. We will definitely come back again, hopefully for another date night soon! read more

If you are looking for a nice restaurant for date night, to celebrate or just looking for a great meal head to Bold. Who would think in tucked into the corner of a strip mall would be this gem. We took our daughter here to celebrate her 21st Birthday. They were generous with our lengthy stay, even starting our dinner a half hour later since 2 of our guests were late. The small plates are a nice touch for those that are lighter eaters, but to be honest it's really more than enough food. I got the fritters, I thought for a small plate, there were too many but they were good. I also got the lollipop lamb chops. I know they are served medium rare but there were pieces that were definitely raw. I didn't want to make a scene because it was my daughters birthday so I just ate what was cooked the way I liked it. My daughter got the corn chowder and it was spicy, I thought that was unusual, but it tasted good, weird that it would be spicy. Yep guests got the salmon and loved it. They make Caesar salad with anchovies which can be a turnoff to some. I liked to variety on the menu. The service was great. My water glass was always filled. Absolutely wonderful. The small plates were great fun. We had a large sampling: the scallops (perfectly cooked), prawns (amazing sauce, could eat it on anything), two different flat breads, the sirloin (cooked perfectly as ordered), crab cakes (can I get some more of those to go, no skimping on lump crab here!) and the chicken flautas! I would recommend any of these based on your taste preferences. Everything was cooked just right and had a wonderful combination of spices. The cocktails were also tasty, I had the pomegranate which was wonderful. I would say that the only room for improvement here would be to expand the selection of local MI beers. We did also get dessert. The crème brûlée was very good with just a little too thick of a crust on it. But the peanut butter cups were awesome!! LIttle rolls of chocolate with peanut butter mousse in them and drizzled with dark chocolate. Overall, a wonderful bang for the buck in a small town in MI!! read more

Another restaurant with atmosphere problems. I loved the brown paper on the tables, the lighting was nice and the view of the corn field was amazing... Eerie, but beautiful. What I didn't enjoy was what looked like fast food restaurant booths and chairs and elementary school carpeting. It's a shame, because the rest of the restaurant is beautiful, but those poor decisions completely ruin what could be an elegant ambiance. I couldn't write this review without explaining how weird it was to sit without a menu for about 20 minutes. I initially thought it was unintentional and they just forgot, but after a while I was just about to mention it and the server actually stopped by specifically to mention they knew it WASN'T time for the menus yet, but they wanted to let me know what the specials were... I sat there thinking to myself, yes, yes it is time for the menus! It was time for the menus 20 minutes ago! Who does this?!? Is this a new thing?!? I'm confused. To give them credit, the food was presented and prepared beautifully. Spectacular flavor! One of the best fillets around. This place is pricey - I'd go back for the food, but if they want to win over customers, they need to get rid of those god-awful booths and chairs - otherwise people are going to want to spend their money in a better looking restaurant with food of equal or lesser quality. read more
