Ive been regular (well most of the time) gym go-er for the last 10 years and The Fitness Centre is…read morehands down THE best gym I've ever been to! Nick and the team are great, very friendly and welcoming and obviously really love and are passionate about what they do! The Fitness Centre is the first 'supervised' gym I've been to and what a great concept! There is always someone on hand for a bit of support and encouragement (in my case the occasional push when i'm tempted to start slacking!) or to show you new exercises to help you really concentrate on any areas you most want to target! (I've discovered muscles i didn't even know i had!) With their help and guidance I've actually really surprised myself and am capable of much more than I knew I would be which is great! I have to be totally honest and say it had been about a year since I'd been to the gym due to previous work commitments and I'd by lying if I said I was looking forward to it!(why is it that exercise is the easiest habit to fall out of and the hardest to get back in to?!)But having made the first step of hauling myself along to sign up I'm actually gob smacked that I actively look forward to going!!! And that was only after my first session! I felt so great after, that I am officially hooked and have been every day since! I can not recommend this place highly enough and the membership packages are amazing value for money! The Fitness Centre is without a shadow of a doubt the best kept secret in Darlington! Whatever your reasons get yourself down and signed up because you need this place in your life! :)

They also have a gym, a snooker table, badminton courts etc. It's a really good facility. There is even a local library and a cafe. Often they have special children's parties at Christmas but you have to book your place early.

Parking is completely free around the centre, though beware of rolling trolleys in high winds! There's also a good bus service and for anyone walking in, I wouldn't recommnd the walk alone but all footpaths are safe and a way from the road. The Rainbow leisure centre has a main hall, squash courts, a pool room and bar, a library, a cafe, a gym, pool and a smaller hall usually used for aerobics classes or bouncy castle parties. It's open 7 days a week and offers pretty much any sport you can ask for. You can hire it out for quite a few things, I've been to Bouncy castle parties here and I have been to an 18th here once. The library isn't always open though so look up the times before you go. The cafe is situated above the hall so any parents can look down and watch their children in various sports. Prices are moderate, but you can only start to book cours 24 hours before unless you're a member at the leisure centre. By joining you get to go to a number of places around Middlesbrough. The staff are all really polite and I only have one small annoyance about this place that because of the balcony you're often subject to people leaning over and wolfwhistling as you play badminton or sqaush.

If you're looking to improve your fitness but like me often find yourself bored of the monotony of…read morethe gym or lack the motivation to really push yourself then BMF could be the answer! British Military Fitness offers outdoor fitness classes led by current or ex-military instructors......but don't be intimidated as although run in an army style, instructors are there to encourage and not force you to do anything you don't want to do. Exercise classes last for one hour and are tailored to three different levels, determined by the colour bib you choose to wear: blue (beginners), red (intermediate) or green (advanced). I went along for a free BMF taster session in Leazes Park (Newcastle) having not done any running before and after an expired gym membership. One year on....I have never returned to gym, rarely missed a session and even ran my first ever half marathon at the back end of 2014. I owe my level of fitness to the fab instructors but also the encouragement of my fellow BMFers. Never before has exercise been so much fun! As a diverse and relatively small group in comparison to other cities everyone knows each other pretty well and are very welcoming......some people even hang around for well earned and guilt free coffee and cake after a Saturday morning session! No two classes are the same which keeps it interesting and whether it be circuit training, pair based exercises or team work the one guarantee is that you will work hard but have fun at the same time. Occasionally equipment may be used like kettle bells or medicine balls but generally exercises involve use of your own body weight. Aside from the people and creativity of sessions week on week, you get to exercise in the fresh Northern air and beautiful surroundings of Leazes Park. Parking is free on some side streets but beware if Newcastle are playing at home due its close proximity.
