Wonderful ambiance and amazing pies! Those Betties sure know how to roll out the hospitality and charm! Can't wait to go back next year!

This pie shop is still as good as it was when I visited five years ago. It's not in the best part of town (there's a bar on one side and a dump on the other) and the kitchen help is definitely shady (I heard they were prison parolees), but Betty sets a clean, well-ordered table and is always attentive. If you mind your manners (no elbows on the table), you'll be treated to one of the best slices of pie in town. There is always a nice selection, but Betty is famous for her lemon cloud. This place is pretty quirky. I usually stop by about once a year, and it seems that every year the business has a new name as well as a new "theme" to their interior decorations. Plus, they tend to keep banker's hours--typically open only on weekday afternoons (best to stop by in-person to check when they'll be open). And what's up with the "Betty" thing? Seems that one can't get hired there unless your name's Betty. Creepy, maybe, but there's something mysterious to it that works for me. That said, there are many constants here that keep me coming back. The pies themselves (and occasionally other pastries) are killer, and apparently made in-house daily (in the middle of the nowhere? who knew?). The service is impeccable and polite, with the staff always at the ready to dish out their delicious treats with complimentary side orders of worldly wisdom. And for a joint that prides itself on being an upstanding member of the community, the starched-and-pressed staff is never uptight and knows when to let its hair-nets down (catch one of the day's last seatings, and Betty just might share with you a little of whatever she's sipping on to make the afternoon go by). Not sure if they intend to expand their hours and/or seating area to accommodate their ever-growing clientele, so be patient when waiting for service in this wonderful little hole-in-the-wall establishment. read more

You know you have found the "right" pie at first bite. That and the long line of eager faces waiting for a slice are key indicators that you have definitely found the best pie joint in town, despite the shady neighbors. Almost better than the pies are the infamous Betties. Trouble is, I can never tell them apart. Are they related or something? Any way, be sure to ask for Betty as your server.
