Blue Moon is hands down my favorite ice cream place in Michigan. There's something so nostalgic about this place that makes it feel like summer every time I walk up. The employees are always young, happy and friendly, and the whole place just has a fun, positive atmosphere. They have an amazing selection of flavors, but their Superman and Blue Moon are easily the best I've ever had anywhere. I've been coming here for years and probably stop in at least five times every summer. It's one of those places that has become part of my tradition whenever I'm in the area. The place is so weird, you wait in a long long line in a tiny crowded area then pay first thing and get a deli style number slip. You then wait even longer while they call numbers up but they only waiting space is in front of all the ice cream flavors so you cannot see what you want to get. Meanwhile the rude employees tell you to cram over by the freezers while you wait so you really cannot see the flavors. Finally once your helped it takes the employees a solid 2 minutes to scoop one cup of ice cream. Good ice cream! We took an impromtu day trip to the thumb area and made a stop in Port Austin. I am so glad we did because this ice cream shop made our trip! The staff were all super friendly and they have their system down to a science so you won't have a long wait if it's busy. They had three dairy free vegan ice cream flavors on my visit, I tried the Black Cherry and it was amazing. They use an oat milk base but it doesn't have the typical oaty aftertaste many dairy free ice creams do. I was so happy with the options and that they even had more than one. There are tons of traditional dairy flavors to choose from and a fun quirky decor. Portions were generous and we enjoyed sitting outside next to the building in the little courtyard area. The location is also close proximity to the water so you could easily walk across the street and enjoy your ice cream by the lake. We will definitely be back on our next trip in the area! read more

The ice cream is great. The service could have been better. The person taking the order was, lets say a jerk. He asked what we wanted the ice cream in. He said the options do fast i couldn't understand him. So i asked him to repeat it. He did, and i still didn't understand what he said. I told him i couldn't hear him and to repeat it again, then he just starred at me. Ah, wait! The visual choices were in front of me. He asked if i wanted the receipt 3 times. Twice i said no, one time yes. The receipt hot waded ip and tossed. Why ask?? Now, the lady serving the ice cream was personable and attentive. 2020-07-25. Blue Moon Ice Cream Shoppe. Port Austin, MI. So with Rybak's closed due to COVID, and The General Store being a bust, we headed back into town to try Blue Moon in search of some homemade ice cream. Located on W. Spring Street, Blue Moon is steps away from the Saturday Farmer's Market. Parking can be found off the adjacent streets and is free. There's also a couple of parking lots behind the Shoppe which are also free. Situated at the SW corner of Spring & Line streets, Blue Moon is hard to miss. The bright blue and yellow building screams attention and the out the door line up is enough to draw your curiosity. Now let's get the COVID facts out of the way. They're open without modified hours. They are enforcing masks while inside and ordering. They do not provide face masks nor hand sanitizer. Employees are wearing masks. Employees are wearing gloves if handling food. Social distancing markers are present. There is no inside dining. (my pics have all the details noted above) With that said there is an outside patio dining area with tables and chairs for you to enjoy. While my family was in line, I checked it out and was pleased to see that they had staff sanitizing the tables and chairs after each patron left. It was a hot day, and outside there was zero shelter from the blazing sun. No trees, no umbrellas, so if you go when the sun is at its peak, bring a hat or a parasol. If this area is full, there is also a small community garden across the street (SE corner of W. Spring & Line streets) that has some additional seating and picnic tables for you to use. The Staff was very courteous and they offered us cold water while we were in queue. Trying to be as efficient as possible, they provided instructions on how to place your order. That's right they had a system! An assembly line operation. You place your order by telling the cashier the type of vessel you would like your ice cream served and let them know how many scoops you'd like to enjoy. Paying is touchless with a credit card that has NFC capabilities, or you can swipe. While paying, you have the option of leaving a gratuity, which I did seeing how well the service was. After you pay, you move along and let the server know what flavors you would like. In addition to ice cream, they also carry sorbet, NSA (no sugar added) ice cream, and Vegan ice cream made with oat milk. If your not in the mood for something creamy, they have Italian ice to cover you. Once you get you dessert, you exit the store through a separate entrance of what I assume would have been their inside seating area (tables and chairs removed due to the pandemic) to keep that social distancing. Onto the goods. Sizes come in Baby, Small, Medium, Large. Ranging from 1 scoop to 4 scoops respectively. You can also order milk shakes, malts, floats, soda's, coolers, and paraphernalia. Much like The General Store serving Detroit based Stroh's, Blue Moon supports another local favorite, Northville's Guernsey Ice Cream. If you're a fan of ice cream, you notice the difference in taste between Guernsey's and Stroh's. With former being more creamy, it's definitely going to carry more fat content and more calories. But this is not necessarily a bad thing, it just means that you should consume less of it in a sitting. We always make sure to stop into Blue Moon Ice Cream for a mammoth cone! Their portion are huge, so bring your appetite! They serve Guernsey ice cream, so you're supporting two MI companies at once. Blue Moon seems like they have at least 100 flavors to choose from. The waffle cones are fresh and the staff is super helpful. The only downside...the line is usually long, but that will give you some time to work up an appetite and chat with your friends and family. read more

I stopped in because I heard they have dairy free ice cream. The traffic pattern in the store is awkward since you have to order before you choose a flavor. As someone with tons of dietary restrictions, this can be off putting, but the employees were friendly and accommodating. There are TONS of printed signs as soon as you walk in. I really wasn't impressed with this ice cream at all. For Michigan made ice cream I was Kind of sad that it wasn't better. I'm always big on supporting local franchise is in local businesses but sadly this will not be one I support because just didn't really care for the ice cream. My friends didn't really care for either and kind of sucked you know. The atmosphere was kind of bland sadly know just didn't seem like they put this building well together for a summer spot. Nothing for outdoor sitting really other then you can walk over to the park and enjoy the beach I guess. I will say though the customer service was great you know they treated me very well and was very polite and smiles on their face so I will give them that on that part. But personally I don't think I would ever get ice cream from here again. read more

Ice cream is okay. Younger employees nice enough. The other one who I think is the owner was pretty in accommodating end of season last time I visited. It's okay to say no to a request but she was rather rude. This is a tourist town, so surprising when shops aren't welcoming. read more

I came in today to buy a small cone for my kid. I waited for 10 minutes in line. Another patron informed me that the line was on the other side and they had to pay first. I asked if I could pay and was told to get in the back of a 20 minute line. i said I had been patently waiting and he said no you can leave. He started yelling at me and my daughter and screaming that's he's calling the police. Every single person in line said I had been there waiting and that he was making a big deal out of nothing. He continued to scream at me while other patrons told him he was overreacting He threw money on the counter and screamed at us to get out before he had me and my 7 year old daughter arrested. I asked for the owner and was told no. The manager is a complete psycho and has zero customer service skills. My child was crying hysterically because he was screaming at us. You seriously scared my small child today, you should be fired. As a small business owner I would be horrified if I had an employee act like that. read more

This was our final stop during a day trip to Port Austin and it rounded out the trip perfectly! Portions were very generous and the ice cream was amazing! The shop had a very efficient and social-distancing friendly procedure for ordering and grabbing your ice cream, and all staff properly followed the mask requirement. Horrible service. We waited in line and prepaid for our ice cream and shakes ahead of time like the sign told us to. The girls behind the counter ignored us and continued to fill orders of people behind us. My thoughts are that they didn't want to be bothered to make milk shakes we had ordered. My malt was completely liquid when I got it. It was like a chocolate milk. Would not recommend going there. And I will never go back.
