Yelp Review 2023 #24: Even on a cold and rainy day, Amsterdam's Bloemenmarkt still has a charm you simply cannot resist. The vibrant colors makes you forget just how cold it is on a winter day. You can buy fresh flowers, seeds, bulbs, and stuff for your garden. There are souvenir shops and restaurants across this flower market. As much as I would have loved to grab something from here to take home, it would've gotten confiscated at the airport anyway and even if we're allowed to bring seeds and bulbs back home, there's no way it would survive Vegas heat. But it was nice to look around and see the beautiful flowers. It is "the world's only floating flower market" on the canals of Amsterdam. It's a free activity until you buy something. read more

If you love flower/garden shops and especially love tulips then you have to check out Bloemenmarkt. It is unique also because it is a floating market as many of the stores are on floating "boats" on the canal. I ended up getting some gifts for family/friends. The area could get a little crowded, and next to the flower markets there are also a lot of separate tourist/gift stores. Even if you are not into flowers, this place is worth checking out as it is near the city centre. read more

It's not like Bangkok. They claim it is the world's only floating flower market. I doubt that. In fact, after visiting the market, you won't even feel like its floating. The entrance is from the street and the shop looks like normal next door bouquet shop. If you see this market from the bridge then you can find, "oh it's floating". It's in the same area where all the attraction exists. So most probably you 'll cross it. It's vibrant and beautiful. Every shop has more or less the same collection. YES, famous Tulip and seeds you can get here. I would suggest buying souvenirs from here. They are comparatively cheap. Though you are prohibited to take photos, everyone is taking photos of shops (including me :P ) and colorful flowers. I brought one showpiece (its famous shoe) back to the US. Besides cut flowers, there are plenty of house plants, seeds, and gardening essentials. If you plan to buy bulbs to take out of the country, be sure they have a customs-cleared stamp on the packet so you won't have trouble at the border. You'll also find a large variety of Christmas trees and holiday decorations. read more

From the moment you step onto the street, you'll be bombarded with everything tulip-related - the bulbs, the actual flowers, souvenirs, clothing, etc. You'll also be able to get a million different kinds of souvenirs here, all of which are around the same price even at different vendors. Bloemenmarkt (flower market) is a great spot to buy souvenirs! I suggest to browse around each stall first to scope out the prices and to see what you'll to buy. The vendors sells tulip bulbs, fresh flowers, wooden tulips, wooden clogs, magnets, Delftware type souvenirs, and etc. I was able to buy magnet souvenirs and mini kissing statue souvenirs here. Thankfully, the vendors also accept credit card payments here. read more

This is an absolutely dream! You can get the most exotic flowers between about a dozen stalls. The specialty is tulips but they have an expanse. I would recommend doing your research first so that you are focused. Also if traveling with the bulbs (they have bloomed flowers too) make sure there is the health certificate so you can bring it back into your country. read more

My only thing about this place is that you can't bring the bulbs and flowers back to the US!! Otherwise, it is a must for someone coming to Holland during off season for tulips. I've never seen so many tulips for sale and for crazy cheap prices- I saw a bouquet of 50 tulips for 10 euros. The flowers are so fresh looking that I thought they were fake at first- Hard for tulips in general to look blemished since they have sturdier petals, but the Dutch sure know how to grow their tulips. If you can't buy the bonsai, tulip breed seeds, etc home, you can always buy the wooden tulips in the wooden shoes to hang on your wall at home- I think it brings enough character and reminiscence to any room. Cons: there is a lot of cheap touristy stuff around, but that's usually tucked in the while the flowers are the ones in full display outside. Avoid buying the souvenirs here b/c marked up prices- I recommend getting them outside of Amsterdam (Zaanse Schans or Volendam if you travel 20 mins by bus to see the windmills/fishing village). Also a little busy with tourism and crowds (what did you expect if it's advertised so heavily?) Slightly detracts from the actual flower experience, but for anyone's first day in Amsterdam, worth taking a look! I think everyone should just buy a bouquet of 50 tulips and just put them in your ice bucket in your hotel or walk around with flair. Like the French carry baguettes as an accessory, one should just parade around Amsterdam with a giant bouquet of tulips or have one in their shirt pocket. This market is located along the canal. Take the tram and get off and it's right there! Make sure to go by 5:30 p.m. or so, before it closes. You can also walk from the Amsterdam Central station 15 mins to get there if you want a stroll. Amsterdam is walkable and beautiful. there are about 10 floating stalls next to each other- certainly the ones located at the ends get the better business b/c of their location but I urge anyone to walk down the whole lane. Just to see boxes and boxes of bulbs and tulips of different varieties is just refreshingly cultural to the eyes. Some of the shops sell bouquets of other flowers and many offer bonsai growing kits! Most tulips are dirt cheap, so it's a pity to not be able to bring them back to the States. The stalls inside are the ones with most touristy goods probably b/c they receive less flower business than their end counterparts. read more

Vendors mostly sell flower bulbs/seeds, cannabis starter kits, and souvenirs, and most stalls sell similar stuff. After much hype on the floating flower market, I had high expectations to be blown away by the beauty of flowers, boats galore on a canal and such. Alas, the flower market is literally a strip of vendors all lined up against the canal side that sells pretty much the same things. Most of the items being sold are tulips + bulbs, some souvenirs, and other misc small items. Finding this market is super easy. As long as you see a whole bunch of stalls that sell similar/same things, you're at the flower market. Prices seem ok. It looks like you could haggle or simply wander from place to place and compare the different prices. If you're looking for quirky souvenirs, a few of the places do have odd items that makes a delightful gag gift. Overall, if you're pressed for time, I would say skip this market. However, if you're in the area, it doesn't hurt to check it out. Plus, there's a kickass herring place nearby that makes your lackluster market stroll worth it. read more

Bloemenmarkt is the worlds only floating flower market. You'll find all types of flowers on sale, but of course, the most popular is the tulip. Tulip bunches, tulip bulbs, you name it. My plan was to buy some bulbs to bring back home to the U.S. So I did some research and got some conflicting answers on whether or not I could bring them back. In the end, I took a risk and bought some and it was perfectly fine. Although some of the bulbs started growing moldy. I enjoy stopping here from time to time when I feel like strolling through the city. Bloemenmarkt (flowermarket) is one of the most popular markets in Amsterdam. It's located on the Singel Canal between Koningsplein and Muntplein, which is one of the busiest tourist districts in Amsterdam, so you won't miss it. You will find all sorts of tulips bulbs in this floating flowermarket. It's a great place to pick up all sorts of colorful flowers and plants. Plus you will find plenty of Dutch souvenirs in this neighborhood to take back home for friends and family. Keep in mind that seeds,flowers and plants must have a custom clear stamp certificate when traveling outside the country. If your wondering how and when to plant tulips? I would suggest the best time frame is in late fall.They grow the best in November, which is a good time to plant tulips, so that they can bloom in spring. Dig a hole about 6 inches deep, place the bulb in the hole with the bulb facing up,cover them with dirt and water, so by spring time you should see a beautiful bed of tulips displayed in your garden. This market is adorable. I found it online as it's advertised as the worlds only floating flower market. As a flower market it surprisingly doesn't have a lot of fresh flowers. It's mostly bulbs and seeds which would be great if I lived in Amsterdam or near by. I could see myself building a really amazing garden here. But traveling with flower seeds isn't the best idea. They also had a lot of wooden flowers and gift type items. It was a nice break in my day to walk around and explore the market for awhile. read more

At the flower market during the fall at least, you will not see any fresh tulips. I was told they both would be available in spring. That said, this market is really just a place for tourists to buy the bulbs that grow into tulips. Don't even try to bring them back to the States. You can save this risk on other things like foie gras or truffles in Paris. Was going to get a mj magnet or sex shop magnet but opted for a canal house with boat magnet instead since this is going on my fridge where my kids can see!! read more

The Dutch love their flowers. From the largest flower market in the world (alsmeer) to the flower shops everywhere, you can find something for everyone in Holland. While the tulips are likely grown here, not all the flowers are. This is a fine place to visit in Amswerdam, expicially if you are going somewhere for dinner and want to arrive gift in hand. Pick up some flowers here. Although be aware, most Dutch have flowers in the their homes all the time anyway. They sell bulbs here as well, and will pakage them for you if travelling. But come to see the sheer volumn, colors and varieties of the flowers. Its amazing. And its a nice walk. read more

I'm assuming there are certain times of the year where the vendors here might actually be selling living, grown tulips and perhaps other flowers, but that was not the case when we came through. There were, however, lots of tulip bulbs and fake flowers being sold, as well as hundreds of people pressed together. I must have hyped myself out of this because I was expecting lots and lots of real flowers that people could buy. If you are interested in getting some bulbs or fake tulips then this would be the place for you! I will have to see if they actually line the shops with real flowers at some point of the year (I'm assuming in the Spring). read more

I had my heart set on the Bloemenmarkt when researching my trip to Amsterdam, but was very disappointed! As an aspiring green thumb, I expected fresh flowers/plants, but was very sad to see this was large strip of vendors selling essentially the same thing (flower bulbs and cheap souvenirs). After about 2 vendors, you've essentially seen everything. As a forewarning -- we were told by the staff at the Tulip Museum that the bulbs sold here cannot be transported back to the US. Bulbs/plants must be authorized with some sort of stamp or sticker. read more

De Bloemenmarkt, the famous and only floating flower market in the world. This place is amazing if you like plants and gardening. The ceiling was covered in dried flowers which caught our eyes and was a happy accidental stop. We couldn't carry any plants home so looking at all the beautiful flora was temptation at it's finest or else I'd have snagged a three pack of cacti or some of the lovely succulents. There are so many types of plants here though for the gardener in you. A lot of reviewers also mention the flower market is an annoying tourist trap. There was a lot of touristy things i.e. Amsterdam magnets, mugs, hats thrown into the mix, but I never considered tulips and bulbs to be a tourist thing even if the tulips here are famous. I imagine if you don't really care for plants then the crowd plus a place that mostly sells flower related items is not worth the time. There are things like novelty cannabis kits and cannabis lollipops for tourist which from my understanding are just joke pops. Highlights-- The succulents and cacti, of course, and the individual Venus Fly Traps. Also, the plethora of odd exotic plants that I don't typically see in shops. read more

So happy that I stopped by here. Aside from the myriad of tulips, there were lots of gorgeous dahlias (bulbs and seeds), sunflowers, salvia, and lily varieties. It was a perfect time to stop by right before fall planting season. They had some varieties you can't find in the states. AKA: The Flower Mart - I must translate for all us non-Dutch-speaking folks ;) They sell plants of all kinds - potted plants, flower bulbs, seeds, soil....even pre-planted bulbs in a can! The Flower Mart is outdoors and is laid out like a farmer's market. Each station has their own merchandise - although most items are related to plants in some way. Just outside the Flower Mart are various gift shops. It's a great place for souvenirs, or just browsing. I bought a handful of those cute little wooden Dutch shoe magnets to take home :) The Flower Mart is in a central location in Amsterdam, located just between Rembrandt Square and the Leidsestraat shopping district. If you're in the area, it's a great place to spend the afternoon. read more

The "Flower Market" is misleading. In my opinion it should be called the "Bulbs, fake flowers, potted plants, general tourist tat, sometimes-has-flowers market." Every person I've ever taken here is disappointed but that's because the expectations haven't been managed. I'm managing them for you now! :) In the spring the shops on either end of the Flower Market have a nice display but the flowers are overpriced compared to the other florists in Amsterdam. The positive is that this market is very central and having a bit of a meander through isn't difficult or out of the way. My German florist friend said that about 20 years ago, each of these floating stalls had beautiful flowers for wholesale but since then the wholesale market has moved to Almera. As I said, the flower market is worth a mosey but most of the flowers you'll see will be the pictures on the bulb packages... read more

Being a huge flower lover I was in heaven strolling through the different flower vendors. There were so many amazing varieties of flowers and plants. They had a huge selection of roses in colors I had never seen and had starter kits for growing cannabis...that was definitely weird to see. They had giant, beautiful hydrangeas and tulips (2/3 of my favorite flowers!) in every color imaginable. I walked through the flower market every single day of my stay in Amsterdam. Bringing the tulip bulbs back to the states is really hit-or-miss. Some customs agents will let it pass with the special certification and seal. Others won't. I wasn't super impressed by this place, because it just seemed to be a lot of shops selling flower-related items by a canal. Lots of tulip buds being sold in bags, and I don't think I saw a lot of actual live flowers. Maybe walk down this path if you're in the area, but I don't think it's worth to go out of your way to come here. read more

The boyfriend and I came here in April, right at the beginning of spring. Walking through a sea of tulips was divine! Even if you don't have a green thumb, the flower market is a must see for any trip to Amsterdam. This area is touristy but it is a fun area to walk around and the shops are loaded with souvenirs. The market is actually floating in the canal. It is a great spot to find very unique bulbs for your garden. Just remember if you are taking the bulbs back to the US or Canada they must be certified (USDA for the US) or they could be confiscated by Customs. The vendors know this and just asked for approved packages. (See photo of one example.) read more

I'm not sure where the hype for this market comes from, it's definitely dressed up like a tourist trap with stands selling souvenirs, bulbs, and "easy to grow" seeds instead of fresh flowers (save for one overpriced stand on the Muntplein side). The one redeeming part is a stand that has some of the most insane cacti and succulents I've ever seen - you'll know which one I'm talking about by the "no pictures" signs they have up. I am dying to buy some of these - they're dirt (heh) cheap, so what's stopping me? I just can't choose, even after many visits to this stand! read more

When It's warm out the fragrance from this area can be intoxicating. Though there are many other little flower stall around town, I always get some for my room from this area. The tulips seem to be just a little more colorful or unusual from some of the vendors here. There is so much variety. What makes this spot nice is the fact that across from the flower stalls are lots of other diverse shops. I've gotten cheese, presents for friends and grand kids, shirts and more in this area. Though it's not a big area, it packs a lots to see in it's short little walk through it. read more

Can you tell Amsterdam is my favorite city in the world? I like to pretend this is Amsterdam's Pike Place Market. The Bloemenmarkt (flower market) is the largest in Amsterdam and is the only floating flower market in the world! It's a definite must-see when strolling around downtown even if you're not looking to purchase any flowers or plants. The flowers are absolutely beautiful - this is where the tulip exploded into the world, after all. It's also surrounded by cute little gift shops, making it a great place to pick up souvenirs. I picked up some beautiful flowers from my aunt and she loved them. They also lasted for a ridiculously long time! It tends to get really busy during the weekends and in the afternoons so I suggest getting here earlier in the day to really enjoy your walk around the market and take in a little slice of beauty. read more

There are a lot of cute shops and restaurants along the way, as well. Because of this, it can get crowded during peak times when the tourists (like me) are out and about. I didn't have any use for tulips this time around, plus I live in America, so sadly I couldn't buy any and take them back with me. Boy howdy did I buy a lot of bulbs here, which I then had to lug all over Europe in my tiny, cramped, carry on luggage. I wanted SO MANY MORE but most of the loveliest varieties are not pre-approved to bring into the US. BOO. (but yay, at least there are pre-approved varieties to bring into the US and Canada!) Just be sure that the expiration date on that clearance is a date after you actually plan to leave the country, otherwise you might have to walk all the way back and try to exchange them. Worth a stroll if you're a tourist who is in to flowers, because this place is full of touristy shops and amazing flowers. read more
