I had the opportunity to visit Blindekuh (Blind Cow) last year during a business trip to Basel. My night out with five of my business colleagues was exceptional and something to remember. We started out having drinks on the upper (and very well lit) level of the restaurant in euro-cool space with exceptionally appointed bar and lounge area. This was an area that made you feel a bit cooler and perhaps younger than you really were. Definitely a place to feel sexy. Once our table was ready, we all decided to order the surprise five course meal... just to keep it interesting :) Our blind waitress came out and welcomed us. We then followed her "rumba-style" into the restaurant with each of us lined up in a line with our hands on each other's shoulders, led by our fearless waitresses into the absolutely blinding darkness. She took each of us by hand and placed our hand on our chair. After that, the adventure began. During our three hour stay, we discovered the novelty of eating food without seeing it, handling hot coffee, and opening and pouring swing top beers in complete darkness. Conversation was focused on the experience and the novelty of it all... which became easy and comfortable as times passed. One thing I did not expect was the about of "flirty" behavior going on in the darkness. About 30 minutes after sitting down a young couple was set at the end of our table. Given the loss of your sight, you end up placing a lot more focus on your hearing... and what I heard going on at the end of the table was a mix of playful conversation and long moments of complete silence with hurried movement when our waitress announced her approach, who was clearly giving them a "heads up" prior to her arrival. This approach was was different that the surprise appearances she made for our end of the table where she would sneak up behind one of our party and proudly pronounce and energetic "HELLO!!!" The food was decent, not exceptional, and the overall experience was awesome. Definitely a place to visit when in town whether with guests or as a couple. read more

A great restaurant where you eat in the dark and are served by blind or at best partially sighted people. How dark is it? Pitch dark - you can't see anything - not your food, not your plate, not a thing! You check in anything that emits light in a locker at the entrance. A waitress guided my wife and I to the table from the entrance and served us. With ease she would appear once in a while to serve drinks, apps, the main meal and dessert. We took the surprise menu so we didn't even know what we were going to eat and were not even told what we were eating until after the meal. However, the food was great, even if we couldn't see it. It was a great meal that provided a little bit of insight of what it is like being blind, realizing how much we take our sight for granted and how we use our other senses to compensate. read more
