Going on the Blasket Island Ferry was an absolutely billiant and thrilling experience! The highlight of my trip this time around with Muckross Estates running a very close second.
The Ferries run every day from Dunquin, weather permitting. The schedule is every 30 minutes on busy days and otherwise every hour - check their Facebook page for latest updates. Cost is €30 per person for return trip, so definitely cheaper than taking the tour from Dingle which costs more and takes longer but you do see a lot more marine life enroute.
It's a fairly quick crossing of just 20 minutes (I think I recall the boat captain mentioning that the island is located 2kms from the mainland). The ferry crew are very friendly and professional and made us put on
lifejackets for both the to and fro boat ride.
The seas can get rough with heavy swells so if you are sitting outside, be prepared to get splashed. Also don't put your backpack on the boat floor- it may get wet! Also when on the return ferry, IMO the best seat is in the middle, so you get a great look back at the island as the ferry heads back to the mainland.
Once you get close to Blasket Island, the Ferry is moored a few feet off the rocks, and passengers are transferred to a dinghy and then take to the Blasket Island Dock - so it's definitely an experience that needs you to be comfortable climbing from one boat to another smaller one. And you get to do the same on the return journey too!
