Instead, I walked out of my hotel to find a vintage shop just a few metres away. Why fight fate, I thought, and walked into Naftalina.
Now, the two ladies who own the shop don't speak English and I don't speak Spanish so we has to get by speaking French. Still, that did not deter them from coming over and offering suggestions as to what would suit me. I had my eye on a '50s sleeveless beige shift dress with a simple looping pattern embroidered around the neck hole. It fit me perfectly ("tres jolie!" exclaimed the ladies) and I bought the dress (EUR70).
I've now realised that it was a bargain at the price I bought it at, even if I was a tad hesitant at the time of purchase. I've worn the dress several times now and, in spite of its simplicity, have always received compliments. A lady in a fancy dress shop, when I was shopping for flapper dress accessories, told me she would steal it if I turned my back on it for even a second (in a good way, of course).
