I was hoping to like this restaurant for a late night snack, but it was a huge let down. I ordered via Uber Eats: I got the mozz sticks and Ube cinnamon roll. When the food arrived, I was thrilled, but disappointment soon followed after the mozz sticks didn't give that sting of cheeze with each bite. The cheeze remained tucked inside the breading. The cheeze wasn't solid either, but mushy. It was weird. I was hoping it'll be like Korny Vibes (Houston, TX) mozz sticks which is the closest I've tasted to the animal based one. Their mozz sticks were cooked right so the mozz would be create a string cheeze while the breading stayed together. At Black Water, it was a complete letdown and missed my craving. The Ube cinnamon roll wasn't any better. It was extremely dense. The flavor of ube faint and wasn't throughout the the roll. I couldn't even finish it because of the dryness. Gross trash. When I'm back in Portland, I won't visit again. By far the worst vegan restaurant I've been to. read more

Came here since was craving burgers and was in between this place and Tulip Shop Tavern (really good smash burgers). Picked this place since we've been here before and wanted to support a vegan business. And omg, they do have really good vegan burgers and chili cheese fries. But wow. Their chili cheese fries are massive and oh so delicious! The chilli tastes proper (no weird flavors) and the vegan cheese was scrumptious! It also stays melty unlike regular cheese. And they give proper amount of sauce. I just kept eating it because it was that good. The crowd here does trend young (mid 20's - mid 30's) and it can get packed towards 8pm. Scorpion burger is always a well earned classic! It came out super hot and fresh and the extra side of cheese dip cup for $3 hit the spot. The new location in Portland has its own parking lot and little private back patio. There is plenty of seating and bar service structure. I want to try the whole menu and full bar! read more

This place was terrible. The food was overpriced ,overcooked,no seasoning and overall gross! The Bartender was off puting. I would not recommend any of the food we got. We tried the French dip, Mac n cheese with soy curls and the reuben. The fries were ok but the fry sauce had no seasoning. The French dip adju was a salt bomb while the sandwhich vegan meat was overcooked and there was no seasoning.same thing with the reuben sandwhich. The Mac n cheese was not creamy and tasted like it only had nutrients yeast and we added soy curls that were overcooked and dry! The booths were ripped and dirty. The bathroom had a bunch of political graffiti and is not a safe place for women,being it is an all gender bathroom. I came here before a concert at Moda. I got the Dragula, bbq sandwich with tots. The dragula didn't really taste like it had any booze in it. The sandwich was amazing and so was the tots. It had the right amount of grease and comfort. I will be back again in the future. I love that they are all vegan and have options for gluten free (like me ). I really wanted to like Black Water, but the food was a huge disappointment. The menu looked great at first glance but what actually came out was bland, greasy, and overpriced for the portion size. The burger was dry and crumbly, with way too much sauce trying to compensate for the lack of flavor. The fries were limp and tasted like old oil. Even the mac and cheese, which should be a safe bet, was oddly gritty and under-seasoned. The biggest issue was that everything felt heavy without being satisfying. It's one thing to do indulgent bar food, but this just felt sloppy and poorly executed. For the prices they charge, I expected something at least memorable -- instead, it was forgettable at best. Maybe it's a better spot for drinks than dinner, but based on this visit, I wouldn't go back for the food. read more

Wow, wow, wow. This may sound ridiculous to say about something as simple as tater tots, but those were the single best thing I've eaten in some time. The amount pictured here is also the "small" size so the portion is great. I also had the chicken Caesar salad. The dressing was thick, tangy and creamy. I really enjoyed the tofu chicken. I prefer tofu over other meat substitutes. Even the croutons tasted fresh. This place is giving dimly-lit dive bar, but this is NOT your average bar food. I recently went to the all vegan metal and punk bar Black Water. Black Water also has it's own record label. Kudos for having an all vegan menu. The word heavy metal was coined by writer William S. Burroughs in his novel Naked Lunch back in 1959. Perhaps the first heavy metal band was Black Sabbath that formed in 1968 almost a decade after the word heavy metal came into existence. I am a longtime fan of both Burroughs and Black Sabbath. I also love punk especially the Stooges who were an inspiration to punk rock. I love the Ramones probably the first punk band along with Clash whose music I also love. My musical tastes are varied. I didn't like the music that was played here though and found it a bit abrasive. Perhaps it was Black Metal or Death Metal. I am not sure. It wasn't played overly loud yet just vibe with it. I feel the Vegan Black Metal Chef would love it here. I went with the cheeze burger that came with a house patty, chao cheese, burger sauce, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles. Service was friendly and kind. I think the veggie burgers are made in house and black bean based. It was a great veggie burger and affordable to boot. I am not a fan of beyond meat and impossible meat although know some folks love them. I am glad they exist as much better folks eat these meat analogs than factory farmed meat. Cruelty-free dining is where it is at. I much prefer a good house made black bean veggie burger any day and Black Water delivers. I also got a kale salad. Awesome they have kale salad on the menu. The kale salad was marinated kale, toasted sunflower seeds, pickled onion tossed in a tahini dressing. I didn't really like the kale salad though and found it underwhelming. Didn't seem like the kale was marinated enough and felt like some tahini was thrown on some raw kale. I have had much better kale salads. Glad there was a kale salad option though on the menu. They have live music here and although the music wasn't my thing some folks might love it. Support your local vegan punkand metal bar! read more

Where the hell do I even begin... Flyer advertised a lady gaga drag show. We got there early, place is way too damn small for the shit show that was about to unfurl. Someone oversold the hell out of the capacity of this place. My friends and I got there early to snag a table. Enjoyed the pre-show food and drinks. Then doors opened at 7. the line for the bar went out to the door. Then around to the bathroom. We weren't able to get any more drinks after that. Line wrapped completely around the entire bar. 4 bodies deep standing in front of us at our table. Person who cashed out for dollar bills told us they will have everyone move to the side so people at the tables could see. That didn't happen. No one moved. The entire place is shoulder to shoulder standing. Drag performers can't even move around the floor to collect tips. We sat through one song and then left. Whoever oversold the capacity (most likely the owner or door person) really messed up. We went to the door person and we all got our money back. My whole group will never come to Black Water again. This was my first meal in Portland and it did not disappoint! I was in search of a vegan and gluten free meal and found this thru my search! Walking up to it, I was a little skeptical and going inside was even more questionable because I don't typically expect good food from a bar but holy crap! My vegan chicken sandwich on a gluten-free bun was fantastic! It was well flavored, and fresh and hot! Also gluten-free were the tator tots fried to perfection and crispy! I am so glad I did not judge this place by the outside and gave it a chance. I wish I had more time because I would have tried more items throughout my trip. Typical pub style food. Nothing fancy. You order at the counter before sitting down. Self-serve water is available. Tried the Bacon Broccoli Slaw. The broccoli was blanched/steamed perfectly, so it still had a lot of crunch. The dressing was very mild, not much flavor. The soy bacon curls were mostly salty... didn't get much of any other flavor. The westerner was meh. The patty itself is very very gummy. It was extremely difficult to cut, even with a steak knife. The crispy onions were far from crispy, they were a mangled, soggy, sticky wad, literally like they had been sitting at the bottom of a warmer pan. TBH they were actually disgusting. The BBQ sauce was good, had a nice peppery flake in it and that burger sauce was next level. Service was great. I don't plan to return. read more

I don't even know where to start - Black Water is so awesome! Great food, beer, and general atmosphere. This is not only my favorite vegan spot in Portland, but it's easily in my top 3 vegan restaurants I've ever eaten at. Heck, it's one of my favorite restaurants EVER. I love how inventive and tasty each dish I've tried has been - from Black Water's spin on "pulled pork", to the cashew cheeze. Everything has been delicious, and the brew selection is pretty sweet, too. And don't even get me started on their house-made sauces, such as their chipotle and ranch. So delicious, and great for dipping fries or tots. Pay for drinks and food up front at the counter. Tables are cleared and wiped down quickly, making for a nice, clean eating environment. I also appreciate that Black Water has gender neutral restrooms. All around a GREAT place that I highly recommend for an excellent meal, beer, and welcoming environment! read more

I came through on a Thursday at 3PM with coworkers after a team building activity. I actually suggested this place because of such a fantastic experience I had previously, and one of my coworkers had mentioned vegan food (making me think she was vegan...but she wasn't). I was really hoping to get an early dinner here, but it turned out the crowd was targeting more snacks and drinks. I ended up not drinking because I knew I'd be parking on the freeway very shortly afterward, but everyone else had a little libation. The folks that had flown in were impressed with the local brew they ordered (I didn't catch what they had), and another coworker had ordered a mimosa that was served in a pint glass! For food, we ordered all the bar staples: wings (both bbq and buffalo), a big basket of fries, a big thing of tots, and nachos. One of my coworkers hadn't had vegan food before (or maybe he had but just never wings before). When he dove in, he couldn't believe that it wasn't really chicken! I'm not sure what the "bone" for the wing is made from at this restaurant, but another coworker said it was some kind of sugar cane. I couldn't tell what it was myself, but it didn't seem like sugar cane. The thing that really stood out to me was the nachos. I'm not vegan, but have issues with dairy, and it took me a bit to realize that I could have these. They are unbelievable! So good, and really you can't tell at all that you're missing anything from a non-vegan dish. They're piled high with "cheese", "meat" and they also have jalapeños on them. The overall vibe of this place is typical Portland dark bar - the bathrooms are fully graffitied, and there's a music venue to one side. read more

This was quite a few months back, but at the time, they had hand sanitizer available at the door and barriers put up at pickup counter for customer and worker protection. The burger was $13 before tax/tip. The pickles and lettuce came separated so you can assemble it yourself to eat it together with the rest of the burger. I thought it was decent but didn't blow my mind, I wish there were some sides to go with it since it seemed on the pricey side. This place was good, nay GREAT! It satisfied my itch for pierogis to say the least. I ordered through DoorDash so I do think the quality of what was delivered was a little meh so next time I definitely want to eat there. The pierogis were delicious as were the tots but I think what made them extraordinary was the sauces that accompanied them. They were so dang good! The dill ranch that came with the tots might have been the best thing I put in my mouth from this place. I wish I could just own a big ol vat of it. Don't come here if you are in a rush - it's really a place to chill and enjoy the ambiance and the music. There's street parking and a paid lot about 2 blocks away. I came by on a Sunday afternoon around 5 pm and they were really short staffed (like most places now) with up to 1 hour wait for food. There was just one server running the place (I guess their colleague ran late) and they did an awesome job keeping it together. My husband got a beer and I got a gin cocktail while we waited for our food...we got a lot - nachos, pierogis, a French dip sandwich and a burger. It was worth the wait to eat something so yummy but also plant based. The decor is a mix of metal/goth and attracts a unique crowd of people. Would come back, but definitely during a non-peak time.
