Eat Unique Indeed. We were famished for something brunchy this past Sunday, and were looking at different places to go to. Went to the Watermark, parking lot was inaccessible, seems people don't know how to park over there. Even the street spaces were full. We headed further west, Flying Pig was closed down, we had been to Crazy Beans, then a quick Google search pulled up a spot we'd never heard of before. Pulled up to a strip mall where BlackSheep was located, nice big parking lot as expected. Walked in, and we were the first ones there. The place smelled fantastic. We sat ourselves and perused the menu. The server came by and enumerated the specials, but I was fixated on Braise your Belly. We also got me-mah's mac and cheese, and started off with the Roasted Garlic Northern Bean Dip and the Minestrone soup. The Bean Dip starter was fantastic. All the little things you need for a perfect bite. A scoop of bean dip on a toasted pita wedge, stick a couple of kalamata olives on the bean dip mortar (3 olives were too much), add pickled red onion and fire-roasted peppers, then top with crumbled feta. Amazing bite. I had a taste of the Minestrone, and it was excellent. Flavors were all there without being overdone. The pasta was nice and cooked just right. The mac and cheese was perfect. I couldn't put my finger on the cheeses used, but it all came together nicely. You didn't just get a mouthful of one cheese flavor. It was creamy, balanced, and the crispy onions on top made it really nice. and the stunner. I am a big fan of pork belly, and this really piqued my interest. Served with lemongrass grits and pickled veg with a soy miso glaze. The pickled veg was tossed in a bed of leafy greens, and I saw some seaweed salad in there as well. A little bite of the grits topped with the salad was amazing. I've never had that combo before. A little tart, a little salty, nice umami, I could have eaten a bowl of just that. However, when the pork belly came into play, everything changed. The crisped, lightly charred crust on the fatty slices of nirvana by themselves were perfect. Cut a piece of it and lay it on the grits-salad bite, and you can feel your eyes roll backwards. I wanted to, and almost ate it all, but I left a slice for my girlfriend and topped off her little bit of mac and cheese that she wanted to take home. Half an hour in, and the place pretty much packed out for a bit while they were doing a healthy amount of takeout/pickup orders. The place is pretty simple: interesting Black Sheep art, with mostly little tables, plasticware, and a drinks cooler. The food can certainly be right at home in a fancier and upscale setting, but doesn't need it. They had one server, and she was delightful and attentive to everyone. The chef came around and asked how everything was, which I find is always a nice touch. Definitely coming back. read more

The food is great. The Taco Bowl had enough for a second lunch. The soup if the day was a zesty surprise. Could not complain about the service as the owner was cooking and serving this day. OMG - went here with my wife based on other reviews and I'm SO GLAD we did. The food is amazing. I ordered Gramp's Roasted Garlic Northern Bean Dip as an appetizer and Good Lord - it is a meal! Next the Soup of the Day which was a Creamy Chicken Noodle (holy Moses)... My wife ordered the wings and Arugula Salad that has candied walnuts (big ones) cucumbers, tomatoes, goat cheese, cranberries and some type of honey vanilla vinaigrette... We LOVED this place and have already decided on our next meal - service was great and prices reasonable. Make a plan to get here ASAP!! read more

This place is a gem! Fries are EXACTLY the way I love them - crispy and flavorful, not greasy. I had the tasty chicken pesto sandwich (just enough pesto but not too much), and it was served on soft and dreamy sour dough. It looked like a croissant but isn't a croissant. The owner is down-to-earth, friendly, has a lot of experience at high-end restaurants, and it shows! Highly recommend! read more

Food was good but the restaurant is a disaster. They need to do a deep clean desperately. I debated even trying it but I decided to give it a shot. The burger was prepared as ordered and tasted good. Walked in with my husband and it had just opened for the day about 20 - 30 mins before. There was no one there but the workers. They were very nice and greeted us and told us to sit where we would like. We sat and viewed the menu. Looking around I was surprised that the floor was dirty crumbs and pieces of food fallen from the previous nights tables. It hadn't been cleaned that night or even the morning before opening? This was our first time here and not a great first impression of this place. I heard this place just opened so I was shocked at the uncleanliness. We got water and they came in clear plastic cups. The water had a few black specs floating in them and something that resembled little pulp of a lemon. There was no lemon in the water. Just plain water. We didn't drink that. Had to wait till we left to get a drink, (we ran to Starbucks around the corner after) The fried pickles where amazing. I suggest, if you go here, to get that. They were hot fresh out the fryer and the sauce it came with was perfectly paired for this dish. Great start, food wise. My husband got a burger he said was okay. I got the Mac and cheese. There were fried onions on the top that were fresh out the fryer and yummy. The Mac and cheese, the top that had melted cheese on it was hot however, under the top layer which had melted cheese was hardly warm at best, closer to room temp. I ate a few bites, trying different spots under the first layer, thinking maybe some parts are hot and it wasn't mixed which would have be fine but it wasn't. It seems that cheese was put on the top and it thrown in the broiler, which heats the top and crisps the top but does little to nothing under the first layer. Room temp Mac and cheese never tastes good to me. So I was very disappointed. A few people started to come in as we were done. We asked for the check and about 10 mins later a customer came in, ordered a meal to go and stepped out and we still didn't get the check. We had to remind her again we would like the check. We definitely will not be coming back here because the uncleanliness of the seating area, the water we received, the main meal was not heated properly, and how long it took for her to let us pay and more importantly leave. (We had a lot to do after) But the staff was very friendly and welcoming. I hope things change for the better in the future. read more

This is my 2nd visit to this restaurant, which was long overdue! I brought 2 guests with me this time and we all thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. We started with a great appetizer Grandpa's Roasted Garlic Northern Bean Dip that was quite plentiful. We ordered the Not Your Average Avacado with Salmon, cooked to perfection; the Between the Herd Steak Sandwich was more than I expected, so tender. And the 3rd dish was the Ashley Taco Bowl with Steak, which was made to my friend's perfection. This is my new go to place for dinner when I know I will get the quality, quantity and quaintness for new tasty dishes that I plan on enjoying each entrée on the menu. I totally recommend this establishment, not only for the food, but for the most welcoming chef John, into his "kitchen". He puts himself into each dish he makes and wants to make sure everyone is pleased. I'm looking forward to becoming a "regular"!!! read more

Black Sheep is... mostly good sheep. We ordered Me-Mah's Mac and Cheese, Cousin Joe's Chopped Cheese, Bash's Favorite Fingers with French Fries, Loren's Flying Chick, and Nacho Average Chip. The good news first: Loren's Flying Chick, Me-Mah's Mac and Cheese, and Cousin Joe's Chopped Cheese were all really solid -- tasty, filling, and did what they were supposed to do. Prices are a little high, but not outrageous for what you get, so I can live with that. Now... the Nacho Average Chip. These were absolutely trash. Almost no cheese, oily chips, weird flavor -- just sad, slippery disappointment. Hard pass. Skip them forever. The bigger issue: Bash's Favorite Fingers (kids menu). These were basically blackened chicken planks. Way too much seasoning and definitely not kid-friendly. The chicken itself wasn't bad... but no child is getting excited about this. I ended up saving it for myself because it was not happening for the kid. For the price, a kids' menu item should actually be intended for kids. Bold concept, I know. That said -- I'm not done with this place. The food is genuinely good overall... just maybe better for a childless meal, and as long as we never order those nachos again. We'll be back. This place was great!! We walked in with our 10 month old and they came right out with a highchair and toys/ coloring books for our son! They were super friendly, and the restaurant was nice and clean. The food was amazing, honestly thought it was just typical sandwiches but they had so many awesome options and it did not disappoint. They made sure to take our son's order first so he could have his food as soon as possible since he is little and hungry, and they also changed the music to Disney music for the kids! Absolutely phenomenal! The sandwiches are hands down the best I have had anywhere on Long Island. So delicious I cannot wait to try them all! We tried the fried pesto chicken sandwich and the steak sandwich and both loved our meals. Everything was on point and perfect - the ciabetta bread and arugula being so fresh, the balsamic glaze was a nice touch and there was just the right amount of melted goat cheese. The steak was cooked perfectly at medium rare and the onions were a delicious compliment. We did not have room for dessert but that did not stop us from grabbing the chocolate flourless cake to go - definitely worth it ! You have to check this place out - you will not be disappointed! Superb, check it out! Totally rooting for this place, in what was once the bustling old Crazy Beans location. That location has been a tough one for restaurants ever since, despite being central to Miller Place & Sound Beach. But we need small, cozy local eateries like this. I just stopped in for a quick lunch during its soft opening. Had a nice fried cod fish and chips, deliciously crunchy. There a great looking things on this menu I can't wait to try - a great selection of salads, sandwiches, entrees and desserts. Looks like they're going to do breakfast only on the weekend, which will be a welcome addition to our choices. Great vibe from the owner and staff! read more

The black shape only has a few tables, it's not a fancy place but if you love food, this is a place to go. I went there with my daughter and granddaughter. We ordered the white bean platter for an appetizer. You knew everything on that platter was fresh and it was absolutely delicious. My daughter ordered the avocado toast and instead of a queen egg, she asked for it over her hard., not an issue. She said it was outstanding. I decided to go for the tuna tartare. It's one of my simple pleasures. The tuna along with the greens and feta and the delicious light dressing came in such a big bowl. I definitely had another 2-meals. What a great experience. Fresh, innovative, gastropub food. Full of well-balanced flavors. Great attention to details, like the tomatoes in the taco bowl were freshly marinated to provide a subtle spice. Mango chutney aoili on Tuna was fresh and fantastic and had the right hint of spice. Deserts are literally homemade and not to miss. Also, have the Beef Sticks, full of flavor and super tender. Peanut sauce was excellent.
