I cannot talk about BHSU as a student because I am not one. However, I am an applicant as a transfer student. Despite already having my BA degree and graduate level work completed, I became interested in the BFA in Photography program at Black Hills State and as I was in the area visiting stopped by the campus to seek information.
I met with Asst. Director of Admissions Taylor Phillips, herself an alumna of BHSU. Despite not having an appointment, she graciously spent time with me (I am a very much older, non-traditional student who would not be living on campus) and explained the application an admissions process and also informed me that I could apply without an application fee. Saving money is always a great thing. Ms. Phillips also informed me that since I had already complete one Bachelor's degree that all of the General Education requirements for the BFA in Photography would be considered satisfied. So, once I start attending BHSU, my only course requirements would be those Art and Photography courses needed to complete the BFA degree.
As a much older non-traditional student, I found the friendliness of the staff members and admission departments quite refreshing and welcoming. While I am curious to see the faces of my fellow students when I sit down with them in class and they conclude someone's grandfather is in class with them, I think it's safe to say that I look forward to attending and benefiting from the formal education I'll receive for a subject that has been a lifelong passion. read more
