The food was decent, nothing crazy. I had the pink mermaid salad with salmon and a sun-dried tomato balsamic dressing. The salmon was cooked but cold (on purpose but still good to know). My boyfriend had the special which was bratwurst with potato's. He didn't love his either because it came in a bowl so his potatoes were soggy from the sauerkraut. The service was pretty slow, probably spent an hour and a half there total for just lunch. The desserts were good. I have been back to the bakery section of the Black Forest Café a few times since my review and I think I have been missing the boat. The baked goods here are totally awesome. The pies are delectable and the huge cookies are fresh and delicious. We have pre ordered pies here a couple times for pre-Covid gatherings and they were a big hit. My favorite pies have been the fruit pies. They also make a great carrot cake. I will still leave the black forest café short of five stars because The interior is looking quite dated in the dining area. The baked goods section is almost making up for it to achieve five stars. read more

I just had the falafel wrap for lunch ($15.00) and found it full of lettuce 4 little balls of the actual falafel and something very hard as a ROCK supposedly falafel some feta cheese and what appeared to be the inside of a tomato cut up into small pieces. Please don't serve something just to make money on it unless it is really good. This was not. And it consisted mostly of Lettuce. The side of roasted potatoes were either from yesterday or maybe this morning they were hard on the outside, not crunchy, hard & old. On a positive note, the cookies and cakes are good. So if you are looking for this I would suggest the coconut cake, very decadent and only need a sliver of it since it is so sweet. The prices are a bit high I will say, but if you join there points program you can get things for free. It would be nice to have Everything taste good but unfortunately not here. If I could give zero stars I would. Horrible place that doesn't know how to communicate with customers. We went in Tuesday evening for an apple pie, they were sold out, thats fine. We were told by one of the employees in the bakery area that if we got here the next day at 8am we would definitely be able to get an apple pie before they sold out again. So we got here this morning 11/22 at 7:45am and waited till the doors opened only to see zero apple pies. We asked the lady at the counter if they had any they said no not until 12pm. We explained that the previous evening if we arrived at 8am they would have pies made. Then we asked if we can place one on hold since we both had work. She said no first come first serve if we aren't buying anything right now we need to leave. HORRIBLE SERVICE. I get it its close to the holidays but we were in no way rude or disrespectful to them and yet we received rude and disrespectful service from them. Will never be returning and I suggest everyone find another business to purchase pies from because clearly they don't know how to be prepared and communicate properly with customers. read more

First visit based on friends' recommendation, happy to say we'll be back. Food and service were great, my only complaint is lack of ambience (for dinner). It's clean and well laid out but feels like a breakfast place (wooden tables and chairs, and floors and blinds, no soft furnishings at all). The Black Forest has really stepped up its game! The menu continues to change with new and tasty dishes. Tonight we had one of their flatbreads (asparagus and prosciutto) and the Korean beef tacos and a chicken pot pie. The Korean beef taco was awesome -- they should really make a flatbread with that beef on it! Prices are a little high (IMHO) but the food is really good. Glad it's right around the corner! She clearly does care and told me that she had a managers meeting on the subject. We have always enjoyed Black Forest in the past, (we've been regulars for years), and we'll visit again, but if we see any evidence of lack of attention to housekeeping like we saw upstairs on Mothers Day it will be our last visit. read more

I enjoy stopping at the Black Forest Cafe & Bakery for the fresh baked blueberry, apple walnut, and lemon poppyseed scones. I try to get here early before my favorites are gone. They also brew Starbucks Coffee and have a beverage club (Buy 9 coffee/espresso drinks and get the 10th free). The different kinds of coffees are self serve from the carafes in the center of the small bakery area. The coffees are okay and don't have that strong & burnt taste found at a Starbucks. read more

The restaurant: Wonderful brunch in a sweet little room. Had the benedict and was very pleased. The Hollandaise was not too thick. Everything was fresh and colorful. Our waitress was ok. She could have come around for coffee more. I love that they bring an assortment of breads from their bakery with jam and butter while you wait. The cafe: The cakes, pies, and cookies are where this places really shines for sweets. They also have meringues, tarts, scones, brownies, breads and things like that that are very good. Coffee is a great array of 5 different types and self serve which is very generous. They also has cold savories that they can warm up for you that are very delicious. Went here for breakfast this AM with my mom. The air conditioner was cranked to "arctic" but my request to have it turned down or off was to no avail. Both our eggs Benedicts were cold. The waitress brought them back and we got two new ones but they were barely warm. Neither of our eggs were cooked as we asked. As someone who orders eggs Benedict often I can confidently say the meal I had this morning was one of the worst eggs Benedict I've ever had. The sauce was bland and being served on a brioche is too much bread. Our dogs enjoyed the left-overs but we won't be coming back for awhile. We had thought about getting something from the bakery for later but changed our minds. We both ended up with upset stomachs within an hour of leaving. read more

It has gone a kinda self service ...... you pick up the menu, order and wait at your table. But when it's delivered it's exquisite. No room for desert! An upgrade recently, everything looking great. It's times like these that I wish my stomach was bigger. A few friends from Massachusetts drove up to New Hampshire to visit with some friends with a new baby...and it was worth it (because of the baby AND because the food was delicious). I got the traditional pancakes and the homefries and our table came with a small basket of pastries. I also got the Mason-Dixon Manhattan and wooooo...it was strong. So strong I had to take a nap on the way to said friends' house. It was more like a 5pm cocktail rather than a brunch cocktail (but I really liked it for breakfast - it came with a little bacon garnish so that makes it breakfast food, obviously). The staff was very friendly, kind and attentive. And my friends were very happy with all their vegetarian options. This place is fairly consistent with their delivery and quality for lunch and dinner, plus the bakery is probably the best part of this restaurant. It is hard to reccomend a couple of dishes because the menu changes with the seasons, seriously, there is a new menu four times a year. The quiche is always on the menu and is very good. Some of the other dishes seems a little more 'new age' and 'granola' for me but they are for the most part good. You aren't going to get a ham and cheese or a hamburger or something like that. If you are going to eat here you are going to want to be open to trying new things. read more

I have been driving by this place for years and had never stopped. I heard somewhere that it was bit pretentious and over priced, but the parking lot was always full. We were headed to one of our favorites on the Oval in Milford, but I the way by, there were several people waiting outside and it was about to rain so we thought of this place. There is plenty of free parking, and the seating area is open, and we were seated right away. Our waiter was personable and friendly and my wife and I both ordered the same thing, a Ruben with home fries. The sandwich was rather large and toasted perfectly. They have a very creative menu. Our group of six had different foods. Some were good but my seat mate and I had Reubens. They were terrible. I could not ID the meat. It didn't taste like corn beef or pastrami. There was enough of it though. The cheese and dressing were minimal, and I couldn't find the sauerkraut. I love sauerkraut. I took 1/2 home, added cheese and sauerkraut and surprise,it tasted great. read more

I'm not in Amherst very often, but when I am, it's to visit the Black Forest restaurant. The sign reads, "Comfort food with a creative twist", and that's essentially what it is. This time it was the Maple Glazed chicken served over roasted potatoes, parsnips and carrots. It was delectable. The service was average; the waitress was pleasant and the decor is a little left field, but not eclectic like that of the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth. I was also brave enough to try some sort of pear cinnamon apple cider and I can report that it's very good. There's a pasty shop adjacent to the restaurant and you can find cookies and sweet treats galore, as well as pasta and sandwiches in the deli. If you're in the area or on the go and are looking for a unique and fulfilling lunch or dinner, the Black Forest should certainly be on your short list. read more

My family and I have been enjoying this cafe for years. Don't know what has happened recently though. The quality of the food has deteriorated. Their chicken salad sandwich (always a favorite) is no longer an option for this writer, after finding cartilage & bone in it. The short ribs were another disappointment. Too much fat not enough beef and the gravy was extremely salty with two small slivers of mushroom. The mashed potatoes were well seasoned with the skins on, unfortunately halfway through our meal a large rotten area was spotted on a chunk of potato. The Bakery... The bakery was the biggest disappointment of all. $5.00 for one stale, flavorless, hard cupcake. Each type of what they called a macaron was like a hockey puck - absolutely awful. The bakery was always the finishing touch to a wonderful evening. We always loved Black Forest Cafe. It's a real shame to see it in near complete disarray. read more

Absolutely amazing selection of baked goodies. It's right inside when you enter the restaurant. They have a ticket system which is a good idea. It was packed on a Saturday morning when we visited. They have lunch items but we were most interested in some goodies. It's really hard to choose as they have just rows and rows of items that you just don't see anywhere else but we were good and narrowed it down to two - the kolache which was nice and succulent with bacon and tangy cherries and the real star - baked appletini which consisted of caramel, apples and what was almost like a marshmallow ambrosia. I've never had anything like that before and it was amazing. I wish we'd ordered more than one as I'm certain we won't be seeing that again any time soon. There was also a craft market going on in the parking lot (looked like it might be regular on Saturdays) which was fun to browse. Even with that taking up the parking lot there was plenty of parking. We had wanted to eat in the restaurant but although we saw people eating no one ever came over to seat us so we wandered over to the packed bakery portion of the restaurant and I was glad we did! read more

We did takeout and must say quality has gone downhill. Short ribs were more like the meat you would put on a sandwich-which lead me to believe they ran out of short ribs and used the meat that is typically used on the short rib sandwich! The vegetables were overcooked, tasteless and colorless. The chicken pot pie was bland, chicken dry and potatoes were large chunks and underdone. And the presentation of the meals was not appetizing-looked like the meals were microwaved and slopped into the takeout containers. On a positive note, the Greek Salad was fresh and tasty. The apple pie looked beautiful but the flavor was bland and way too much cinnamon-all I tasted was cinnamon! Prices are high and freshness can be slightly under-regulated, not to the point of safety issues, just could be more perfect if they're gonna charge so much. But great selection of tasty, healthy options and delicious, quality desserts. Best coconut cake and lemon tarts around! Cookies really could be fresher, chewier. Hard to find, homemade-style foods using healthy ingredients. They've nailed that with their soups and variety of veggie salads! Maybe they just need to re-focus the menu a bit on what they're strong at.
