Any other pub staging its own annual beer festival would probably have a few token international flags and two-for-one offers on domestically-brewed beers in bottles dressed up to look like continental pilsners. Not so here, this is the real ale, real deal - if the German market is Birmingham's big winter event, for me, no summer is complete without this one.
Broader reviews of the delightful pub itself can be found elsewhere on Yelp. That should give you the background to one of the city's most-charming venues, complete with its own dining room and magical garden. As for the festival, it's a yearly, two-day affair, always in July. (2012's is set for Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21 and coincides with the Eagle's status as CAMRA Pub of the Year).
Part of the appeal is just to spend an entire Saturday at the place (normally it shuts in the afternoon). As things stand normally, you'd get a range of changing guest ales from small breweries plus several permanent beers. The festival takes the regular concept and runs with it, even serving from a small tent in the garden; the outdoor area being an attraction in itself. If the weather is fine, the atmosphere is as intoxicating as the tipples.
Despite the real ale plaudits, it's not to say that lager is a dirty word. While you won't find a massive range, the paler stuff is well-kept. There's no snobbery here, even on festival days.
If you plan an all-dayer, do pace yourself. Things are made easier on that score thanks to the dining room, although bar meals are available. Like the beer, both are a cut above the rabble.
This is an occasion not to be missed. Don't end up crying in your not-as-nice beer because you forgot and have to wait a further 12 months. read more
