Located in the courtyard of the Casa de las Artes, the beautiful outdoor seating and great food attract a nice crowd throughout the day, and the proprietor is visible and involved--making his dedication to delicious food and a great experience obvious. Cafes are VERY common in this area, and you will find that there is a 'typical' Mexican cafe menu: coffee drinks, juices, smoothies, sodas, breakfast, salads, and sandwiches. Cafe Haus isn't deviating from the classics, like the hipster-esque Besame Mucho and Mate Bistro, or staying tried and true, like Restaurant Plaza, but instead the menu has all the staples with a modern flair. Take elevated technique and attention to detail and you've got Cafe Haus. My favorite Mexican brunch-type-food is called a 'mollete', which is toasted bread smeared with beans and topped with cheese--it's very, very simple, so how is it you can really make them stand out amongst others? ask the owner because that dude's got the answer. Huevos Rancheros are everywhere. Everywhere. It's a fried egg with a savory tomato and onion sauce on top; but the sauce here was awesome--complex but balanced. The same could be said of the chilaquiles, which were not overly sour or acrid, as they can sometimes be; both those dishes were the best of their kind that I had. The meat is flavorful, cured and cooked; I thought it would be tough, but it was tender and juicy, and it's paired with a nice, soft, rich, fatty bread. The best thing I ate (in a restaurant) during my vacation. The drinks were also very good, especially the sodas. The coffee drinks, while not bad, aren't great, but the truth is we went elsewhere for coffee before/after coming here. The flavored lattes and cappuccinos tasted really good, but I prefer unflavored, so I stuck to the sodas, specifically the Italian Melon, which was freaking awesome. But in general, here too, the ubiquitous soda flavors were better than other places. I think the best way I can sum up the general attitude towards foods here is by mentioning the orange juice. When a few of us ordered orange juice, the owner informed us that (because of the season) the oranges weren't very sweet anymore, so he was adding a natural sweetener "to balance the flavor". That's it right there. None of us (two of which are residents of this city) had ever heard of someone sweetening fresh juice, but his reasoning made sense to us and the juice ended up being great--it was even clear that the juice had benefited from it. With delicious, thoughtfully made food, great drinks, and a relaxing and beautiful atmosphere, it's definitely a place to check out if you're in the area.

Located in the Plazoleta Miguel Hidalgo, this has definitely been one of my favorite…read morecafe/restaurants during my stay in Salamanca. Clean and comfortable, it's mostly a breakfast and brunch type place; and although they are open in the evenings, they do not have a dinner menu. Offering cafe staples--cappuccinos, espressos, lattes, etc.--which are all good, they also offer shakes and Italian sodas with unique flavors like lychee, which I have not seen in other place. With a large sign in front stating that they make food to order using fresh, high-quality ingredients, they also encourage you to let them know of your food preferences or any restrictions you might have--a very nice touch! I had a croissant sandwich that normally comes with meat, fresh veggies, and cheese, but I asked them to hold the meat....and they did! It may not sound like a big deal, but after a couple of errors at other places I'd like to give them credit for that. The croissant was definitely the best and most buttery that I've had here, and they added a nice tangy dressing that really rounded the whole thing out. Unfortunately I didn't have a chance to try any of their cakes or pastries, but I did have the Fresas Marqués, which used fresh, sweet strawberries, that good, complex, Mexican chocolate, and whipped cream--simple but VERY delicious. The drinks were very good--especially the Cafe Americano, which was the best I've had here--standing out in a place where cafes seem to be all over the place. The interior and the ambiance it provides were also very nice, making it one of those places you just want to sit and enjoy your food and drinks over a long period of time. The biggest standout here, though, has been the service, which was the absolute best, friendliest, and professional I've had during my stay here, and I came several times. I really liked this cafe, I really did, and I came here several times, but I started going…read moreelsewhere toward the end because sometimes this place kind of frustrated me--they always seemed to be out of something. I understand that things happen every now and again, but it seemed to be a pattern here as opposed to a fluke. I still have to go with four stars though, even though three--or even two--would be fair, because when everything is just right, it's really an awesome place. It's along the corridors of Jardin Constitucion, my favorite 'jardin' in this city--with its gorgeous trees, its church bells, and its liveliness--and it has outdoor seating. One night there were older couples all dressed in white, dancing to different kinds of music (apparently this is done every Thursday), and another night a couple come out and play awesome instrumental versions of mainly Frank Sinatra songs not fifty feet away from our table. The drinks and the food are both really good, and the is service too, I just wished it could run a little more consistently; one day, I $#!t you not, they were out of bread. Bread--when sandwiches are a huge part of the menu. They make our favorite cup of coffee, so we had cup and went somewhere else to get a sandwich, which is what we had all really wanted. Like most cafes around here, they serve breakfast and lunch type food, but are generally open pretty late. The breakfast was good, but their panini sandwiches were REALLY good--using great bread and fresh ingredients, and were my favorite thing on the menu. The breakfast, again, was good, but was better elsewhere, except the crepes--which were not good at all, strange even. They reminded a little of rice wafers, and they were not very flavorful despite the filings; the French toast, on the other hand, was simple and really good--soft, chewy, and custardy all at the same time. The coffee drinks were also good overall, if not the best. They do make a really good cafe Americano, and it was my dad's favorite place to get a coffee; I, on the other hand, like mine a little stronger and preferred the one at Santa Maria Cafe y Galeria--this was my runner-up. My favorite cafe drink is the cappuccino, and this one was good but not great, being a little thinner than I like, but at least it had a good, pronounced coffee flavor. The service was good, friendly and polite, and there's definitely a Mexican-hipster (which I didn't know existed until I encountered it) vibe--playful menu with playful names, servers with piercings and beanies, and a respect for ingredients--but the experience was inconsistent. The ambiance cannot be beat, so it must be factored into the rating, and I did have a couple of really great experiences here, so I would still highly recommend this place. I actually will now look forward to coming here when I consider the prospect of visiting again, and that's GOT to say something right there.

Located on Calle Benito Juarez, on the northern side of the Plazoleta Miguel Hidalgo, the Jazz Cafe…read moredidn't really distinguish itself much in a city absolutely infested with cafes. Although it wasn't a bad option, I only went once even though it was the closest cafe to my hotel--probably about 75 feet or so from the entrance--instead I usually traveled the extra 25 feet (or so) to go to a different one. It isn't as nice, or as comfortable, as other cafes and the drinks are actually subpar, being thinner and weaker than most, but the food was actually pretty good. The service, while not terrible, was not very good--kind of friendly but way too laid back and inattentive, and the sandwich I had ordered came with the meat I had asked them to hold. That said, my sandwich (which I actually decided to eat with the meat because it was actually really good) was delicious, and it was served with a side of a tasty, Italian-vinaigrette-type dressing that went perfectly with the cheese, tomatoes, and cucumbers in the sandwich. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a really good sandwich made with fresh ingredients on great bread, but I would also say that you could walk to the other side of the plaza for the best sandwiches I've had in this city (though admittedly I have more to explore). If it wasn't for the food I wouldn't recommend this place at all, given that you could find a nicer, more comfortable place with great service and great drinks just 25 feet away.
