The staff are friendly and welcoming and the ambiance is cosy with real fires and is blissfully music-free. All the food is sourced locally, as are the cask ales. All the awards are well deserved and testament to a well run hostelry. A real gem.

The pub has two rooms with wood burning fires in each, the bar is in between and accessible from both. Inside it's cosy and traditional. This place has been here for centuries and the history seeps out of the walls. The four cask ales are mostly local. There were a couple of Mordue beers on when we were here - Workie Ticket being a favourite - and a couple from a bit further away, all nice. The star of the place is the food however. As this was a wedding reception the food was delivered in tasting bowls (there wasn't enough space to seat everyone for a traditional meal) one course at a time. So much great food! A winter salad with poached pear, caramelised walnut and blue cheese was a revelation. The mussels excellent and the rarebit appetiser so perfectly done. The mains were wonderful too. Winter veg mash with huge hunks of beef in rich gravy, aromatic and moist kedigree, spelt risotto and a unique game sauerkraut with bockwurst. Then came the desserts! Local creme brulee (Burnt Northumberian Cream on the menu) was stunning, as was the sponge, the mince pie inspired tart and the mountain of cheese. If you're a foodie you'll love this place. Just try and get a reservation first!
