Fan of the chain and diner food. Service was excellent and there were so many genres of food on the menu it was kinda overwhelming as I didn't know what was going to be generic and good. I've been wanting to go here for awhile now and finally got the chance last week. I'm a big fan of mom-n-pop down-home-cookin style places. This place has that nice cozy feeling the moment you walk in. The food was very good. And at the prices they charge you for it...it's a steal! I had the breakfast ribeye steak and eggs. Eggs were cooked perfectly and the portion was very generous. Their hashbrowns were unique. A mix of crunchy and soft potatoes that left my mouth wanting more. I'd like to try their other menu items. I real do like black bear but when you get your food and it looks half eaten it hard to be pleased. I order the slow cooked pot roast with vegetables and a baked potato. I received 8 small pieces of meat, 10 different vegetables and mashed potatoes. Even better we ordered the cub macaroni and cheese for my kid. Our daughter loves the food here. But the service is hardly ever good. Just today we waited for 15 minutes to be seated. Once seated, we waited 20 minutes at the table and nobody ever said two words to us. No water, no greeting, nothing. After I asked the host for help, still nothing. Maybe it's because they were short handed due to Garlic Fest. Who knows? Either way, we got up and left, but not before I said something to another waiter and to other customers on my way out. I used to stop by and pick up Bear Claws for clients who never been there because they were delicious and the size of a Bears Claw, people could not believe them and had to go see for themselves. Now they're very petite, always seem stale and flavorless? Last Saturday around 1 PM we stopped by for eats, my wife got pancakes, bacon, egg and hasbrown breakfast and I ordered a Reuben. Finally, after a long ass wait (with not many customers in the place) the food arrives; the waiter had spilled the little syrup container all over her breakfast plate (why don't pancakes come on their own plate anymore?) so syrup on eggs, hash browns and bacon.... yuk! My Reuben was coldish and the fries were cold and soggy I asked for another order of fries but my wife did not want to bother, she ate the Pancakes and left everything else! Big Bad Bear.... This place kicks a fair amount of butt. They should be open later, hey Black Bear, you guys ever notice how busy the dang Dennys' are in this area late at night? Try staying open late, and advertise it. They play old hokey music which is kind of fun, and their corned beef breakfast is OUTSTANDING. Waitress gave herself a $40 tip. Usually i never check my receipts. The first ticket at the top showed my meal and the tip area blank.. the second receipt showed $40 were added. When i went to complain they promised they had reversed the transaction.. when i ask for the receipt back in case the charges still showed on my account , they told me that they threw away the receipt and couldnt find it. They denied me the right to have any of my receipts. How could you not find the receipt all the sudden? ALWAYS check your receipt and your bank account for the correct amount. Was convinced by my husband to give it "one more try" for breakfast.... showed up at 8:45 on a Saturday and waited 15 minutes for a table... not bad considering it's a weekend... BUT... waited 15 minutes for someone to take our order... AND now it's been 47 minutes and no sign of food..... this is ridiculous! I don't know how they stay in business ... but they won't be getting any more of my hard earned money! Black bear dinner is a great place to get food in gilroy, they have a wide selection of foods that are sure to meet anyones taste, the service is usually great with very attentive servers. I have tried many dishes here but by far my favorite are the burgers and onion rings. I usually get the California burger and add mushrooms. Although the burgers don't look huge (accept the big bob) they are very filling and have a great juicy/fresh/seasoned taste, best burger i've had in gilroy by far ( with the classic in and out running a close second best).
