Yesterday I played golf at the Kokkedal golf club in north Sealland. Sealland is the eastern most…read moreafar island on which the city of Copenhagen sits on the south east edge. Sealland is the most urbanized area of the 3 main islands of which make up the mainland of the country, Denmark. These north Sealland royal estate-extension suburbs have been known to be called the 'whiskey belt' of Scandinavia. To get there I took the coaster train and got off at the Kokkedal train stop. The course is located 15 mins walk from the train stop. The main entrance road quietly meanders through to the club house which is located to the north service entrance of the Kokkedal castle. There are numerous meadows with beautiful horses in the fields along the walk through this early 17th century danish castle estate. The castle is a spectacle to the period that I might call the early European royal enlightenment era. The castle's has a pure white facade and a neocolonial palladien classic greek style to it. It is a non fortified castle and as such it has sprawling open spaces with ponds, water lillies and large willow trees which mesmerizes you into the HC Anderson like fairytale land of that which I am coming to discover is Denmark. When I arrived the head golf professional welcomed me into the club like one of the members and ushered me around the facility. I warmed up, stretched out and hit some balls on the range before my tee time. The range was quite short at about 220 yards and ran alongside the first fairway. I joined and played in a 3some with a male and female member in the 4pm time slot. They spoke English with me and guided me like a tour caddie around the course. The members interacted with each other like old friends. They both had very positive and uplifting spirits. Their golf etiquette was meticulous. I'd say 'fit for a queen'. For scoring we played stableford with a max-out pick up system. I could tell that the greens had been lightly sanded quite recently and they were fast and true. It is my estimate that they were running at approximately 9 on the stimp meter. The greens contours were aggressively shapey and there were lots of subtle breaks and tiers in them. The course in general has a wonderful mixture of meadow like holes with some undulating hills. The 6300 meter length of the course is protected by large well positioned trees and risk/reward bunkers. The bunkers had new heavy sand mostly around the center. There are wonderful but penalizing errand-lining random cuts of long fescue grasses that can swallow your ball if you hit any shots astray. The long fescue grass shaping is artistically creative and adds an intriguing layered texture to the natural landscape of the course setting. The rough grass is a moist rye and is mostly quite thick. The fairways are cut tight and the grass has a healthy soft greenness to the touch with my brand new custom grind zero bounce Taylormade wedge irons. There are deliciously sweet wild deep pink berrie bushes that line the border of the holes in certain places. I highly recommend snacking on a few as you make your way around the course. They burst with freshnesses of flavor and aromas. We played 18 holes in under 4 hours and we had no one in front of us all the way around. For me the whole experience had all the essence of that I am coming to almost expect of my time here in Denmark. The members offered me a beer after the round and George Kopfler, the male member gave me a ride by car back to train station, which I greatly appreciated, since it had now just started to rain. As he dropped me off he gave me his card and invited me to play with him at one of his other clubs called the 'Scandinavian'. Until then when I may write again...
