My husband and I would like to build a modest retirement home in northern Door County so I called…read moretoday to introduce myself and our project to this General Contractor. I did this in a few sentences. Then Tom Birmingham introduced himself and asked WHEN we were thinking of starting this project. I said "next year, but there are pieces of it which may be able to be started this year maybe". He then said, "I am completely booked for the rst of this year and through the winte so I am going to decline. Thank You" And he hung up the phone. I was dumbfounded and took several minutes to recover from this abrupt, shocking treatment. Then I gave him the benefit of the doubt and thought he couldn't be this rude and unprofessional and must have made a mistake. So I called back and he answered. I chuckled into the phone and said' "You didn't actually mean to hang up on me, did you Tom?" And without a word, he hung up again. Now I didn't get the chance to tell Tom this, but I have known him and this company for more than 30 years. I have worked with his wife several several years also. But I lived away from the area and have gotten married so he didn't recognize my new name. So this is how he treats a stranger who would like to do business with his company. Can you believe this? Can you imagine trying to build something as important as a house project with someone of this temperament? I certainly can't. And you can bet I will continue top relate this story to anyone interested in building a home in Door County for as long as I live there. And I know a LOT of people. Too bad for his partners and crews who have to work with this kind of personality everyday--my unending pity. Truly.

If I can prevent one person from making the same mistake as I did in hiring Paul Tangora as an…read morearchitect for your project, I will have succeeded. Paul owns Marquette Design Group. I wanted to hire someone who was familiar with the area, this often helps with building codes and permitting. I met with Paul in June of 2021 to begin the design process. He met me out at my building site and took some pictures. I gave him a detailed list of must haves and gave him some sketches of what I had in mind. I am designing my permanent residence and mind you, it is only 1500 sqft. He promised that he would take everything into consideration and assured me he would be around through the build process to prevent any issues of design vs build with the builder I choose. The first round of design went ok. Some of the requests I made did not make it into his design. I requested that the garage be connected to the house. In the first round there was no garage design at all. He then designed the garage separate and not connected. I made the mistake of paying him the second half of his fee at this time. There still was no site plan at this time because of some miscommunication between the surveyor and him at this time. Everything went downhill from here. I know that changes take time and time is money. I offered to pay more money than the agreed upon sum to compensate for this. We came to a mutually agreed upon sum. Now he refuses to make any changes and Paul got pretty nasty. Here are some quotes from the e-mailed responses I got from him: "[my name]....You have got to stop making changes. Last summer when we were designing the house, was the time for changes. And its (sic) not a question of money. It has to do with time...my time...the time I have committed to other clients months ago. I can't keep coming back and taking time away from my other projects. I don't want to sound curse (sic), but I can't commit to anymore changes. I don't have the time." "This would have met ALL!!! of my OBLIGATIONS!!!....before you started making changes" Paul failed to realize that, I too, am a paying customer. I found many of his correspondence unprofessional and downright rude. Do I want my house to be designed correctly? Absolutely. Was I willing to pay more? Absolutely. Paul has now gone completely dark and refuses to answer any e-mails or phone calls. I must now hire another architect to complete what I paid him to do. My family has built several custom homes over the years. I have also been responsible for the design and build of several multimillion dollar R&D facilities in my professional career. I have not seen anything like this before. Beware and avoid.

They estimated when they said they would. They did the work they said they would and I have to say it was a very pleasant experience. They honor their word. This summer I'm building a large pole garage at my place and guess who got the nod? That's right, Carey Contracting. Believe me, if I had not been satisfied with the fire rebuild then I would have chosen another contractor. No hesitation on my part; if you want honest work at a fair price, go with Carey!

My gf and I recently had Carey Contracting do an extensive bathroom/laundry room remodel. They were top notch - professional, offered good, clear communication, were quick, did good work, and were fair priced. They used (with necessary modification) our plans which required demolition, reframing, insulation, replacing and rerouting plumbing, electrical, window(s) installation, tiling, paneling and trim work. They also installed a non-standard door in our old log home. Some of this work required subcontractors, who despite one hiccup, performed well. I had previously contacted three smaller area contractors, none of who could even be bothered to return my calls and/or provide an estimate until a "week or so". One contractor even indicated he would not bid on the job if we pursued a competitive bidding process. One call to Carey and we had a walkthrough of the potential remodel area the next day, and a estimate the following week. Approximately six weeks after the start of the demolition we now have a brand new bathroom that is not only highly functional but beautiful.
