We walked around and around, but because it was February, some restaurants were closed because it was not tourist season. After walking past Le Chaudron twice already, the third time I looked down and saw a light on, and realized, "Hey, that's a restaurant down there in that cave place!" Ok, I don't think it's LITERALLY in a cave, but maybe it is. It's set downstairs and the walls are made of old stone, and of course, it's in a very old building as is all of old Antibes. I ordered a fantastical pasta dish while my husband ordered a seafood dish. Not only was the food tasty, but what really put this place over the edge was the service. We are not fluent in French, but my husband speaks a little. The owner of the restaurant spoke very little English. She was just so gracious in trying to listen to my husband attempt French, and the three of us really tried hard to communicate which actually made for an interesting and enjoyable time. She understood our dietary needs and was trying really hard to make sure certain ingredients would be ok for us. We ate vegetarian on this trip, with my husband adding in seafood here and there, so it wasn't tough at all. I really loved how cozy this place was. While the menu (although all in French) was good with a nice variety, and the food quality and taste was excellent, the service really put this over the edge for both of us!

The restaurant has a humble exterior (largely blocked by gelato customers), but once you descend the stairs into the dining area you are in a sheek, romantic, cellar. Intimately small but comfortable. The walls are lined with stone and endless wine bottles. The starters were all quite good. We had the snails, squid, and cheese plait. As a bonus, my waitress recommended an excellent wine to pair with the squid. It was spot on. My group shared the beef and tartafelle (forgive my spelling). The beef was succulent, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I had no idea what to expect with the second dish but it was delicious and I would certainly order again. The prior night, I had the bakes camembert when eating solo. The dish is exactly as described. It's tasty, but I'd recommend it for a group since eating an entire block of melted cheese solo is challenging. Last but not least, the wait staff were wonderful! We really enjoyed chatting with our 2 waitresses, who went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed ourselves and our election of drinks. As a tourist, you really hope to stumble on a gem like this were the locals charm you and really guide your dining experience. If ever back in Nice, i'll certainly go again!

I had to come back and give them a stellar review, because it was absolutely delish and memorable. Of the restaurants that I visited in Cannes, this was for sure the best I had. Their degustation menu was slightly more, but had 6 or 7 courses on offer; with the wine option I think that came to EUR85 (no doubt, another great bargain). Overall the food, service and ambience were all great and we're happy to recommend this very attractive restaurant to any epicure / gourmand visiting Antibes. Reservations are required. We saw the hostess turn more than a few people away. The only disappointment was no dress code. I'm old fashioned. I wore white trousers, a button down shirt and a blue blazer and almost felt out of place. Most other patrons were dressed smart / casual but at least 2 guys showed up in beat up t- shirts, looking like they'd just finished a shift chipping barnacles or paint off of boat hulls; the kind of attire suitable for Burger King. In my humble opinion, Le Vauban should up their game and impose a reasonable dress code more aligned with their reputation, excellent service and gourmet cuisine.
