I was glad to discover the Rose Stone Inn, a charming B&B in the heart of historic Dell Rapids. Built in 1909 to accommodate traveling salesmen, it might well have been a stopover for my grandfather, who moved his family there from Knoxville, IA. (The town does boast at least two funeral homes, right there on the main street, and he was a wholesale casket salesman, so...). It's not cheap, but it had the great advantage of being right in the middle of where I wanted to be, and as I was soon to discover, the delicious breakfasts I was given each morning were substantial enough to eliminate the need for seeking out lunch! I stayed in the Violet Room (aka "Violet's room"), which was perfectly sized for a single traveler and had a small, but well-appointed en suite bathroom. The decor was period correct and aided my mental time travel. Sharon, the host, was always friendly and welcoming, without being the least bit obtrusive (for those travelers who might avoid a B&B out of fear of too much familial feeling!). I also met the House Dog, Maggie, who invited me to give her a belly rub upon our first acquaintance, and I happily obliged.

The Good Immaculately clean hotel-- our room was very clean, modern and comfortable. Hotel bar--we received a BOGO drink coupon at check in. Nice touch. Comp breakfast-- hot and cold items. Eggs, sausage, pastries, whole fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, biscuits and gravy. Something for everyone. Very nice. Coffee with flavored creamers! The (few) Negatives Price--I travel for a living and the $155/night price tag is steep for a small town hotel. For full transparency, I did book the same day. Still, this price tag is high. But clearly they can have this price and people still book. Staffing-- the same young lady who checked us in also was the bartender who served our drink in the bar. There was a bell that you could ring to get her to both locations. She had to rely on the bell as you could not see either location from the other. I felt sorry for her. Would for sure stay here again in spite of these few negatives. Was a nice experience.

You can make your own waffles at the included breakfast bar- like beer and pizza, even bad waffles are pretty good. Not that these are bad waffles- crispy and light flavors were better than expected from the industrial dispenser. If you need to stay in Madison SD this is a good spot.

That being said- he has stayed at his fair share of hotels including being a Choice Member. So, he booked this one for a work trip. The price was ridiculous for a Comfort Inn- nearly 200 a night for the weekends and about 150 a night during the weekdays....for South Dakota!? (it's not Sturgis time). He always books a couple weeks out, and hotels have never had an issue ending the reservation early due to his job moving him to another state/city. Hotels work frequently with companies such as GE, Oil, etc in order to keep good relationships with these traveling workers. Go to checkout yesterday morning (Wed) and he tells the front desk girl he is checking out 2 days early due to having to go to Texas. She says there will be an early checkout fee of $356 in addition to paying the 2 nights that he wants to leave early. An early checkout fee of $356?!?! And still the nightly charge?!!? Never heard of this, and I myself also used to travel for work. So, he said- okay here's the key but I won't be checking out until Friday. Still had to pay the 2 nights but said (rightly so) will not pay the $356 early checkout fee. BTW there was no maid service during the nearly 2 week stay and the front desk lacked customer service....so what is that $356 early checkout fee?! Will be calling Choice Corporate about this!
