Chili, at Big Y World Class Market in Torrington, CT.
Tom D.

This review is for the Hot Soups & buffet section, as I do not do my standard grocery shopping at Big Y, I find their prices to be a bit higher than the other supermarkets in the area. Soups are decent, but I often don't get a chance to have their soups because they tend to be completely out when I take my mid-afternoon lunch break. I've been disappointed several times, had to make other selections from the Hot Bar, which I find is just OK (and expensive). Consequently, I don't enter the store much anymore. That's my "main beef" with Big Y.

Half cheese half meatball...sorta?

Will the store in Torrington, CT order Royal Lunch milk crackers?

Hi Rico. Thank you for reaching out. At this point in time we do not carry Royal Lunch products. We have milk crackers by Heritage Mills. Royal Lunch was previously Nabisco and was sold to another company. We are looking to add this product back in… Read more

The Torrington location is great. Stands out amid sadder versions of Stop and Shops and Big Y stores in the area. Service is terrific. Selection ample. Feels like I'm "getting something" for my investment. Just a cautionary tale: For all of the new shelving, floor tiles, paint, and displays, there comes a price. And just because it's merchandised expertly - it doesn't mean it's worth the value it's priced at. IE: Hellman's mayo, is Hellman's mayo at any store. I love the store. I love that they have an array of Central NY brands (Hoffman's, State Fair/Speedie, etc). But I always make two lists: what are the wants from Market 32 and what are center-store grocery needs that can be purchased for 20% less elsewhere.

I also appreciate that they carry a good variety of brands, like the Boar's Head meats and Cabot cheese I picked up. Checkout lines can get a bit busy at peak times but they move at a decent pace and the store is clean and organized. Prices are reasonable for the area and they often have good sales. Overall, a solid grocery store that makes weekly shopping pretty convenient.

Aldi recently had a makeover and I like it a lot better. You will see produce as you walk in now…read moreinstead of crackers and peanuts. This works better because it was very crowded where the produce was located before. The produce is usually fresh and most items are always available. The workers are always working hard to organize and restock the shelves, answer customers questions, and jumping on a register when the line starts to grow. The middle aisle which is called the aisle of shame has SO many different household and food items you never knew you needed. Each week they have new things. These items are only available for a limited time. Once they are gone, they are gone. You can find items for gifts, for your house, or for yourself! They have everything from candles to legos to ottomans. They have fresh meat and great frozen food. One of my favorite things is the different types of cheeses that are available. I also like that I am able to check myself out and bag my own groceries. The one thing that I think could use some improvement are the carts. A lot of them don't work and that means sometimes when it's busy they don't have any available. The prices at Aldi are affordable and cheaper than most grocery stores.

We're happy to update and upgrade our observations about Aldi in Torrington. The store is a bit…read moresmaller than a couple of other Aldi in this area, but it's got a pretty decent stock given its size and is kept very clean. The cashiers and staff seem to have gotten a bit more cheerful and involved than in recent years. But the big deal here remains the prices and the quality. Aldi prices are consistently lower than any other grocery we visit, whether for meat, produce, or drinks. We're fond of fresh fish, and the Norwegian and Atlantic salmon they sell here is seriously fresher and lower priced than anywhere else in our area. We frequently buy their cut fruit, potatoes and onions and paper products, all god quality and sold at a solid discount. They have added a lot of checkout stations for shoppers in a hurry.

Compared to other BJ's locations across the state, this one feels noticeably limited in both space and selection. It gets the job done for basic needs, but if you're used to the larger warehouse experience, this one might feel a bit underwhelming.

It was well stocked, but it took me some time to find everything I was looking for because the layout of this store is a bit different from the one in West Hartford. There was a very kind lady offering samples of corn and apple sauce, she was working at both stations simultaneously. Each time I passed by her she offered it to me again. I told her, I just had it, she said "that's ok, have another one!" I always thought the people who check for your BJ's membership card as you're walking in was the most ridiculous job, because you can't really do much without your card. On this occasion they didn't ask for my card. I was convinced it was in my purse. After my shopping cart was filled and I went to pay, I discovered I didn't have my card. Lucky it was in my car, so all time wasn't wasted. Their job to check for your card, actually has a purpose, holding you responsible that you know where your card is. BJ's is a Club Warehouse. Their membership is $55 annually. This is where I typically go to fill up my car with gas. Their gas prices are the best.
