Came to Big Y to pick up 2 pizza pies, one-half pep and cheese, and one mac & cheese which I've never seen before. With the pepperoni and cheese being very good, the mac and cheese had a wonderful flavor and was very tasty. They have a lot of variety to choose from for their pizza toppings along with other goodies. The other selections I saw were the cookies and cakes, with again, so many choices to offer. The grocery store is big in square feet providing a lot of groceries and other items and well cleaned throughout. It's great to see how kept up it is which I give a big applause for. I tried to order sandwiches a week in advance and they said I needed to call 3 days in advance instead. Then when we tried to pick up the sandwiches we watched them give the trays over to someone else and then claim we never ordered. They said we had to call the store manger who never showed up but after an hour wait they remade our sandwiches. my custom cake which I did order a week in advance looked totally insane. It was crooked and sloping down like a hill, scraped up white icing spray painted pink in splotches, instead of using actual pink icing. Cake showing through the icing, employee fingerprints on the sides, it was honestly horrifying that we paid for that cake but we had no choice right before the party. It is up to the Big Y management to enforce this. Especially since it has become mandatory: From Ct. Governor: Starting Monday, April 20, at 8 p.m., Connecticut residents will be required to wear face masks in public to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. On Tuesday 10/10/17 I went to the Big Y in Stratford to use my coupons for kitty litter that was on sale. I was not aware of your coupon limits and was fine when I was told I could only use 5 of any 1 coupon. The issue is that I had 2 separate coupons for 2 separate items and was told I could only use half of the coupons I had. Here is the example: The kitty litter was on sale for 4.99. I had 1 bogo manufacturers coupon and 1 3.00 off manufacturers coupon. So when I bought 2 items I would get 1 for free and 1 would be $3.00 off. I had 5 BOGO coupons and 5 3.00 off coupons. I had 10 things of kitty litter: 5 would be free and 5 would be 3.00 off meaning I would spend $10.00 on the 10 things of kitty litter. First at the checkout I was told I could only use 5 of any of the coupons - this is false. Then I was told I could use 2 BOGO and 2 3.00 off - again that is false. A front end person went to get the store manager - Travis - who I thought would be able to rectify the situation (I did have more than the allotted items for coupons but I told them that I would only do the up to 5 of each coupon). Travis treated me like a criminal, my daughter was in tears because we were brought to a counter and when I attempted to explain I was in my rights to use the coupons I was dismissed and Travis basically told me to go shop somewhere else - he was not going to honor the manufacturers coupons (he was wrong and violated your terms) and that I should just go to another store. I asked for the district managers number and decided to go to Shelton. Before I drove to Shelton I called and spoke with Ollie - the store manager in Shelton. He told me - he would accept the coupons and that I should come to his store. I did and when I got to the store I could hear Ollie being paged and that the Stratford store was calling Shelton to warn about a crazy coupon lady. When I went to check out with 8 litters (and a bunch of other things I needed) I again was told I could not use the coupons - that I could not use 8 because they are the same - they are not the same coupon. There are 2 separate coupons. In this transaction I was basically ridiculed and made to feel like I was stealing - again I had the right to use the coupons the way the manufacturer issued them and I was ridiculed when I was trying to follow all the rules. The next day I was waiting for Betti Boggis to call back and she did not so I called her and explained the situation. She agreed that I should have been able to use the coupons and when I asked if she would let the Stratford store know she said - why would I want to go there - I would not know what reception I would receive. So basically she told me I should not shop at the Big Y closest to me because I was going to be treated badly. WOW I asked for restitution since I could not use my coupons and she told me she would have someone else call. I asked if she had my number and she said - I called you didn't I - correction - I called her. This was my first time shopping at a Big Y - all the commercials talk about neighborhood and how shopping at Big Y is great; that is false advertising. I was made to feel like a criminal, my daughter was horrified, I had to drive to different locations for your stores to not honor your coupon policy. Not only that but I was told by a district manager not to shop at my neighborhood Big Y because I would not be treated well. This whole experience makes me sick and I promise I will share this with everyone I know - Don't go to Big Y - they don't treat their customers with respect and they don't honor their policies. . read more

Usually when we order the Family Fish fry it is good, but this time we tried the onion rings instead of fries and the box of onion rings were overdone some completely burnt. Very disappointed to pay for something and not be enjoyed because it was served burnt. read more

This is my local store that I frequent. I have always loved this Big Y. I give it only 4 stars because while I like the recent renovation in general, I hate the new overly bright lighting they have installed in the deli section. Big Y in general has a good selection and I think good meats. As we all know they are the highest priced store in the area. As one other reviewer stated, it is the closest store to me and that;s why I go there. You NEED to buy what's on sale otherwise you are paying way to much. They are not open 24 hours, not a really big problem, but when you are open, be full service. Why do people go to a grocery store at 7 AM. Most likely because they work and it's the only time they have to shop for groceries. So now you get there and the fish is not open and the meat department isn't set up either. Produce not much better. Here's an idea. Spend a little extra money on employees and get them in an hour before the store opens to set it up properly for customers that arrive at 7 AM. I was there yesterday and the fish was still not out at 8:20 AM. SALE ITEMS. This really burns me. Sale starts on Thursday. You have a certain fish on sale for $5.99 and I come in on Saturday and you are out of the sale item fish. Here's another idea!! If you are having a sale on a fish or meat item, stock enough for at least 5 days. You are out in 2 days! Not acceptable. That's a con job. If the managers on these departments can't do better than that, you need to replace them. On the other hand, it might not be their fault Big Y, it might be you restricting what they can do. Kathy R I would like to start out saying I shop at you store at least once a week Most of the time I have no problem with your store till last night. I walk in and went to the deli department where I wanted to pick up some cold cuts for my daughter school . I saw a young black girl with her gloves already on and she was cleaning the counter. I said I would like a half pound of turkey sliced thin. She proceeded to slice the turkey with out changing her gloves. Now maybe I missed her changing them so I did not say anything. She then threw the pack of turkey at me like she was having a bad day. I asked for roast beef She went in the back and came out a min later with the roast beef in her hand and while holding it the other lady in the deli asked if she could hand her the butler so she could sweep. she picked it up and handed it to the other lady without changing her gloves proceeded to slice the roast beef with the same hand she picked up the butler with. she then slammed that down in front of me . well the kind of person I am I should have said could you slice that over but I did not. So I then proceeded to the front where I left the cold cuts at the end of the register. I then approach a older lady on the front end because I did not want to leave the cold cuts at the register without telling someone what had happen. So I told the lady what had happen in the deli and why I left the cold cuts there and the only response was REALLY that it REALLY and walk away, nothing from her. Big Why is rated M for Mediocre. PROS It is the most convenient location to me, so I use it as I would a 7-11. Boring Head has not yet taken over the deli, so I can get Jarlesberg swiss there. It's the only store for miles that carries it. CONS If you're a comparison shopper, you'll recognize the highest prices anywhere. Signage is criminally misleading. Worst fish department in the land. An in-house bakery that does not sell bagels (What the...?). CONCLUSION If you're in the area, and you're short on time and you don't know prices, you'll be happy at Big Why. read more

I was shopping there yesterday at the deli. One person was wearing a mask below his nose and two others were wearing them around their necks. When the guy who was wearing it below him nose attempted to wait on me I told him the mask needed to cover his nose. He told me he couldn't breathe like that. I told him that if that was the case he should not be touching food. He stormed off the job. Two other women working in the deli but not waiting on people were wearing the masks around the neck. One saw me eyeballing her and put it on but then pulled it off when I walked away. I reported it to the manager. Maybe if counting is so difficult for you, you should pay with a debit card like everyone else. This way you don't have to worry about your inability to count. My choice for shopping will be on-line and small neighborhood shops after today. This morning, I went to the Trumbull Big Y to pick up some items for a family party. I stood by the bakery counter for 5 minutes (it was not busy in the store). The four staff ignored me, wanting to gossip among themselves and avoid customer eye contact (not just me but others were waiting). For the prices charged by Big Y, it would seem they would have better trained/paid staff than other local grocery stores. This wasn't the first time their employee "non service" was my experience. My wife and I were in town to visit my mother who resides in Trumbull. We looking for a birthday cake for my mother's 80th birthday. All my family members who resides in Bridgeport told us to stop by Big Y. We reside in Orlando Florida, and we have Publix, a very popular and high end grocery store in the Southwest part of the US. Big Y reminds us of our store and Whole Food. They had small outlets of restaurant from pastas, fish and a large selections in the deli department. The bakery was amazing with all kinds decorations of cakes and pastries. I picked out a cake that were cupcakes under the frosting. The lady behind the counter was extremely courteous and friendly. She assisted me in selecting the cake for a party of 20 people. The store was huge and clean. The workers were courteous and asked if we needed help. The birthday cakes was delicious and everyone in the party enjoyed it. The customer service is what impressed us. read more

Quality and the freshest meats, bakery, produce, seafood and prepared foods.... properly trained and attentive employees providing superior customer service, (especially Phyliss in Seafood and Marcus in meat Dept) the atmosphere immaculate and overall positive vibe. The food here is always fresh and I Like Big Y don't get me wrong. 2/23/17 Called at 7:35 tonight to order a family fish fry and was told that they were closed when xferred to the seafood department, I found that odd so when I called back customer service desk said they close at 8. I wasn't going to order at that point and have someone spit in my food for making them do something they don't want to do. Sometimes even the pizza shop gives you this attitude like it's going to be 20 minutes or some exorbinant time like to dissuade you from ordering what is it with people? I have been coming to this store since it opened and spend $1500 a month on groceries here for all my grandkids and family. Today I cannot begin to express my frustration with the cashier ANTHONY, I was 1 penny short (YES, 1 PENNY SHORT) and the nerve this cashier had to tell me sorry I can't help you. I ended up pulling out a dollar as the line was quite long and ANTHONY began to huff and puff when he had to ask his co-worker if she had a penny. I'm 80 years old and am a frequent shopper here--absolutely disgraceful. I was so mad walking out I peed my pants. Yes, I PEED MY PANTS at how angry I was. I still work in retail full time and I would never ever treat someone like this. Sad this is how this generation views seniors. The other thing I love the most is no self checkouts. As I appreciate our new world of automated services etc. I miss the human interaction. I absolutely love the European Layer Cake, so naturally - my mother thought it would be appropriate to order that particular cake (in strawberry) for my Bridal Shower a few weeks ago. Everybody was raving about this cake! They expected your typical dry yellow cake with an overwhelmingly sweet filling, but the European Layer Cake form Big Y is nothing like that! It's not too sweet, but just sweet enough and the layers are moist - I grew up in Poland so I'm used to eating cakes that are moist (soaked) and the cream isn't too sweet. This cake from Big Y truly reminds me of the cakes we used to bake in Poland. So many people asked me about this cake at my Bridal Shower and they thought I surely must have gotten it from one of those fancy over-priced bakeries! I like big y a lot for many reasons! It has no self check, and Always well staffed. My experience with this big Y is beyond reproach a while back. I haven't been back. A rather completely empty store probably around 8 -9 pm, two lanes opened. One had two people in the lane. So I went to the empty lane, unknowingly this is the express lane. The clerk asked how many items I had. I think I had few more than the express limit like may be three more items. Not much more it is late, I am not shopping for the week grocery this late. She advised me that she is reserved for express check out. She went back perusing her phone. I was redirected to the nonexpress lane to stand behind existing people there. The poor clerk in this lane ended checking out all the shoppers that brief period of time. While the express lane clerk continues to peruse her phone without the decency to help her coworker or few late evening shoppers. I have total respect for express lanes but a relatively empty store....come on...there got to be some flexibility to this rule. Also, It's kind of unfair to the girl assigned to the non express lane. She doesn't get to redirect shoppers to the express lane. But whatever, I haven't been back. I just shop across the street in target. They don't make too much fuss of items limit. read more

honestly, what I love about the Stratford Big Y is the welcoming wide open doors in the produce/flower area..........when those doors close for the season, it saddens me. I get that they are pricey, but I work very close & I guess I pay for the convenience. also, since they switched the circular from coming with the mail, to being delivered to homes ( or NOT delivered to MY home, in my case ) it is more difficult to see the sales, unless I remember to pick up the circular for the week. I have to call the front desk for the senior coupon subject, as I don't get it any longer. when I retire, I may continue shopping here, but remember, not everyone is a digital fan - I do miss the gold coins, which I took advantage of - I rarely remember to click those digital coupons now, which results in less sales prices. overall, I DO like this store, but wish they would iron out some things .............. read more
