Ghandi said that he thought he would like Christians but had yet to meet one. Big Valley Dry Goods seems to reflect this behavior. It offers Amish dry goods in a store that appears to be lit by natural light alone. It is run by plain people based on their clothing. While I greatly like many of their materials (cooking tools, games that the Amish play, including board games, toy guns (!), canning supplies, interesting books), their team was adamantly not wearing masks nor was the one customer. Not wearing a mask and pretending that the governor has not put up a mask mandate or that it does not apply to them because "they do not like the governor" is not being Christian as I practice it. To ignore science and to ignore government is not just irresponsible but unChristian, and it not following the Bible that presumably many working and shopping there profess to read and to follow. I'll be back post-pandemic, but I lost some respect for them and for the religion they represent through their clothing, materials, and the design of the store. It is a matter of respect. I don't care if you call me sir, but I do care that you will clog the hospitals with uncessarily sick folks, to the extent that other sick people can't get treated, and that we wear our health care system with a disease that is easily avoided through simple behavioral changes. read more

This store has a variety of kitchenware, glassware, gifts, plastic toys, sewing supplies and books. Much of the same made in China ware that you can find in any dollar store in the United States but in a cozier, down home electricity free environment. If your tastes are not too fancy you can get all your sewing and fabric supplies here. They have a nice little selection of books which includes books on backyard herbal medicines you can find in this area and other traditionally themed topics. I picked up a nice Pennsylvania Dutch dictionary here. read more

What we found was a scavenger hunt of a store that seemed to go on forever. This is one of those discount stores that has no set inventory with a wide variety of selection. It kind of reminds you of an old general store mixed with a very lowkey department store. Everything from food, bedding, makeup, toys, and housewares can be found under one roof. If you do intend on making a stop here make sure that you have some time to kill as it will take you a bit to make it through every item on the shelves. You will want to look them over to make sure it is what you intend to buy or to make sure it is not out of date. There are many different ways to go about this place as it is a bit of a maze. But do be sure to make your way to the other parts of the building as well. Don't think that it is just the one room where you walk in. I ended up getting a gigantic bottle of olive oil for the price of a tiny one at a regular store. One other thing to note, there is another location that you can check out that goes hand and hand with this place. However it is located elsewhere. We did not get a chance to check that out, but just so you know.

Every town deserves an independent bookseller like this, but sadly not every town is fortunate…read moreenough to have one. I am thankful that Lewistown (where I grew up and visit once or twice per year), is one of the lucky ones. The place is absolutely charming, occupying the bottom floor of a stately old house in the heart of downtown. They make excellent use of the space and offer something for everyone on beautiful wooden shelves. Bibliophiles of all ages and interests are covered here. The children's section gets its own room and the selection there is particularly strong. There are a few places to sit if you find yourself getting lost in a prospective purchase. Besides books, they carry puzzles, games, calendars, cards, and some decorative items. It takes passion and dedication to open a shop like this in today's retail landscape. I sincerely hope that they flourish! I will be sure to visit every time that I'm in town.
