Ok. I was excited to see a Filipino food on Sawtelle. More variety on the street. So I got the combo plate, which is an entree and 2 sides and an order of lumpia. My entree was 1/2 and 1/2 of garlic rice and pancit. The 2 sides were sigsig and chicken adobo. Took them awhile to make because they have online orders to fill. I took it to go. When we got home to eat, they didn't give me the pancit. They gave me garlic rice and regular rice. The chicken adobo was ok. And they Didn't give me sigsig. They gave me some ground meat instead. So they got the order wrong. Ok. On to the lumpia. We had those right away in the car on the way home. They were bite sized. About 10 pieces. The lumpia filling lacked flavor. The lumpia wrapping was not crispy. I would expect it to have some crispness to it especially they just made it. But nope. This is why they got 3 .

I've been wanting to try Big Boi Filipino and their sister dessert spot, B Sweet, in Sawtelle Japantown for a while now. I had previously tried their Filipino-flavored butters back in 2020, and they were delicious. That experience made me excited to finally check out their full menu and see how their savory dishes stacked up. For my order, I went with the pork sisig ($12), garlic fried rice ($8), pancit noodles ($9), and their weekend-only fried chicken with gravy ($15). The sisig had a nice balance of flavors but was a bit on the oily side. This was what I expected though because of the pork belly. I loved that it was smothered in mayonnaise, making it a messy but delicious dish. The garlic fried rice was flavorful and aromatic, pairing well with everything else. The pancit had a good taste but was very simple, with not many ingredient. I felt the pancit was something that could easily be made at home, so it didn't stand out much. As for the fried chicken, the skin was slightly overcooked. The meat itself was still flavorful, and while I liked how the gravy complemented the chicken, I found it a bit too salty. A little less salt would have made a big difference. One thing I noticed was that many customers were ordering the combo meals, which seem like a much better deal than ordering à la carte. The Bigz Combo caught my eye--it includes two entrées, a choice of rice or pancit, and pandesal for just $18. If I come back, I'd probably go for that option instead. A cool bonus: if you save your receipt, you can get $1 off at B Sweet, which is a great incentive to check out their desserts after your meal. Stay tuned for my next Yelp review about B Sweet! Overall, Big Boi serves up solid Filipino flavors. The sisig and garlic rice were enjoyable, though the fried chicken needed some tweaks, and the pancit was a bit too simple. I'd still be open to coming back, especially to try the combo deals and see what else they have to offer.

Got the fried chicken and chicken adobo + longanisa combo. It was my first time trying Filipino food and this was such a great introduction to the cuisine as everything tasted amazing. My favorite was the longanisa, couldn't get enough of it! Can't wait to try again.

The chicken was perfectly crispy and flavorful with a unique breading. We loved the sides of garlic rice and noodles, and the chicken adobo was our favorite over the beef. We got so much food for our money and went home with many leftovers to enjoy. Bonus perk was a coupon for their dessert bar, B Sweet, home of the best bread pudding.

I came in on a friend's recommendation, so I had high expectations. I wanted to love it, but Big Boi was okay. Also, no indoor seating or restrooms available. I ordered filipino spaghetti and a pork sisig meal and calamansi juice- we thought this was the perfect amount for 2 people. The filipino spaghetti wasn't as sweet as I expected, but... my bf LOVED it! I thought it was okay at best. (6/10) The pork sisig meal was a nice size and came with pan de sal! It was also a (6/10) imo. Calamansi juice was probably my favorite thing we had. The cold, sweet juice rounded out our meal! (10/10)

Big Boi got me through some sad pandemic, lockdown times (kudos for them for figuring out the take out/online ordering + social distancing thing so quickly). Years later, I still think they have the best Filipino food I have ever tried. * The weekend fried chicken is the best and even better with the gravy included. * Garlic rice pairs with everything, goes well especially with the longanisa. * Pork Tocino is good and reminds me of Chinese sausage. I would order the longanisa over this, as it is more flavorful. * Lumpia has a nice amount of filling and perfectly fried.

I like Filipino food, but I don't eat pork - so I'm very excited to eat here! I loved the vegetarian lumpia! The sweet chili sauce is perfect! I can't wait to try the rest of the vegetarian options. Friends from Northern California can't wait to come down to LA just for this restaurant! Thank you for making delicious vegetarian Filipino choices!

Food is perfectly delicious! The vegan sisig tastes just like the sisig and the sinigang was on point! Even the rice must be mentioned as it may have been cooked with pandan or coconut. Brought home pan de sal and pandan butter, ftw! Service was fast and the place is tiny but got a table right away. Big Boi is a definite stopover when in L.A.

Food was plenty for our party of 11

Big Boi has been a family favorite for years and once again, they did not disappoint! Portions are large and we were able to fill up the bellies of our 11 family members for $167. Pancit and lumpia are always a favorite. We tried the fried chicken and gravy for the first time and we will definitely be adding to our regular orders. Sadly they were out of the Ube butter and the other butter flavors just don't compare. Though I am not an expert in Filipino cuisine, I will say that Big Boi holds its own when compared to the home cooked Filipino food I have eaten.

Been coming here since the day it opened and have always been happy that there's a convenient Filipino restaurant that opened in the West Los Angeles area neighborhood, at the time when I used to live nearby. It is also owned by Chef Barb, owner of the nearby popular Filipino desserts place called B Sweets. They used to have a tables inside but since they reopened post covid, they now just have patio : outside tables and majority of their business is mostly take outs and deliveries I believe. They still have the same consistent good and delicious Filipino foods and the stand out would be the crispy fried chicken. It is super casual and if you decide to eat there at their patio, everything will be served on a to go paper plates, cups and containers which was fine. The service was great and food was made to order quick. You either have to order online in a kiosk like machine available or order personally but I think they prefer for everyone to order online. Modern times lol! Parking is a bit challenging because the only place to park are the metered street parking.

    Steph M.

Decently priced for a lot of food! I typically get the combo with 1/2 rice and 1/2 noodles. For my meat I'll get the pork sisig and chicken adobo! The lumpia's are also a great choice! Everything was flavor and service was quick. You place an order on a tablet by the front door and seat yourself outside.

Do they serve halal or kosher meat?

    Really?

On google maps, your store says temporarily closed? Is this information correct? I wanted to try this place on Tuesday with my friend!

I was there in Sawtelle, yesterday, Tuesday and the store was closed during dinner hours. I am not sure if this is a temporary closure or if it is permanent.

Do they offer the ube pancake?

    Yes they do

What is the lumpia made from inside in this particular restaurant?

    I believe it's pork

    Is there anything vegetarian?

As you can guess from the restaurant name;), this is not a vegetarian heaven. There is one vegetarian option which is Sautéed Seasonal veggies. You can have it with Fried Rice, rice or Pancit Noodles which all are vegetarian. Pancit Noodles are… Read more

The place was somewhat small but wasn't really busy for a Saturday afternoon, and we noticed they had some spacious auxiliary seating areas specifically for Oakobing across the hall. At first glance, the prices seemed sort of high for shaved ice, so we opted for sharing 2 of the smallest personal sizes ($8.5 each). It turns out that this size was plenty. I'm not sure how big the regular bowls are, but I think especially after a meal the personal size is plenty for a satisfying dessert for 2 people. I'm assuming part of the large price difference in sizes comes down to the large amount of fresh fruit that comes on their regular bowls. Still, we very much enjoyed our bowls. The ice is shaved almost impossibly thin, and rather than melting into a pool of water almost turns into a sorbet/ice cream like texture, which is very satisfying to eat. I enjoyed how their condensed milk topping was diluted to form a lighter cream that was more sauce-like than think and drizzle-like. It all lended to making the dessert enjoyably light. I would definitely drop by again, especially if we could avoid the parking costs.

Every part of it was so yummy and refreshing, it didn't feel too difficult to share and finish between two people.
