There's really nothing English about this pub, beyond the St. George's Cross on the drink menus. I tried this place for the first time recently after living in Oldenburg for quite some time. I thought I'd have a nice pint of Murphy's, which they have on tap. The pint was fine, if carelessly drawn, but the atmosphere wasn't quite what I had hoped for--though in fairness little different from neighbouring bars.
My only really serious complaint concerns overzealous security staff at the door. After having my one and only beer in this pub, I had an unpleasant incident just after leaving, when some clumsily stacked tables across the street fell over (I was standing near them). I grabbed the tables and stood them up again, just trying to help. Two bouncers heard the noise and saw me handling the tables, and assumed I had made the mess. They then came to me and accused me of knocking them over myself. Then they told me to clean up the broken glass on the ground. I stood my ground and witnesses confirmed that I hadn't done anything wrong, so they finally left me alone. However, the experience was awful, and it left me with a really poor impression of the establishment. I had the feeling that the bouncers were just looking for trouble--and strangely, were willing to leave their posts at the door and cross the street to find it.
This of course might be an isolated incident...maybe I just had bad luck. I don't think so though. Overzealous bouncers can really sour an otherwise decent experience, and there are plenty of bars in the area that don't usually have any security staff at all. In any case, I will definitely avoid the place in the future, no matter how much I love a nice frothy pint of Murphy's stout. read more
