It was my first time in Fashion District and I was so thrilled at the array of fabrics and trims available in the area! I had earlier emailed David asking for some pink elastic trims and he emailed me back saying he will look for it. A few days later I checked in with him and he told me he didn't carry anything like that in his store. I thought it strange, as it was not really a tall order.
Well as I was walking down 9th Street, I stumbled upon this store, not realizing it was Big Bargain Trims, I found a few nice pink elastic and was pretty happy about it. I only needed a yard of the colors I found because they were samples for a client. The attendant glared at me incredulously when I asked him to cut me a yard, like I had asked him to kiss my feet.
That left a briefly sour taste in my mouth, as I was being nice and polite and I started wondering if I should fib about being a famous designer coming back for thousands of yards!
I ignored it and proceeded to continue hunting for a few colors that I needed, and an old man came up to me and started yelling at me! He didn't speak very good English but I could discern that he was very bothered by me buying only a yard here and there and claimed that I was messing up his inventory. Now I had two spools in my hand, ready to head for the counter for a trim, and that was it!
I was absolutely appalled, shocked beyond words and wondered what I had done to anger him? The store said retail and wholesale and I've seen many tourists wondering about the area purchasing notions. A trim store I stopped by earlier had the nicest, most accommodating shopkeeper, so what was all this nonsense about?
I was in good mind to walk out, but was quite pleased with my finds, so I stomped up to the counter. I saw the boss sitting there (was he David?) and I started to ask him why his employee was yelling at me and if I was not allowed to by a few single yards. He blatantly ignored me, and reluctantly cut from the spools I had brought up to him.
I paid for it, and ran out. Beyond disappointed and dismayed for being treated so unkindly but not before seeing that it was the same Big Bargain Trims I had emailed David about, and of course he had pink elastic trims, plain in sight. I just bought it.
Did I need to be some hotshot fashion designer or be in the fashion industry for them to treat me like a customer?
I wouldn't be giving them a second chance. Nasty! read more
