I told the waitress about the first drink I had, she suggested the Kiss of Life drink which has seco, Johnnie Walker and said this would be better. I went to Guarita the first time while it was in soft opening, the kitchen was not in operation but the bar was fully operational. Jean Ponce, besides being the great bartender, is one of the most welcoming hosts - he really makes you feel at home and all of a sudden you are part of the family. The first time around I tried his signature 'Rabo de Galo' and the classic Negroni - both drinks are well prepared, with good ingredients and hand-crafted crystal clear huge ice cubes. One interesting thing that Jean told me is that he will used different types of glassware to serve the same drink - keeping it casual but at the same time the quality of the cocktail served should be consistent with their standards. The second time around, Guarita was fully operational and I decided to give the food menu a try. I orders the pork belly sandwich and trust me when I say this - it was one of the best sandwiches I have ever tasted - spiced pork belly with thin slices of cucumber and some coriander make it a gem in the menu. Since greed has no limits, I shared a pizza with my friend and once again the kitchen deserves full points - the food at Guarita is really spectacular. I tried a 3 lime lemon caipirinha with some good 'ol cachaça and Jean's caipirinha fame is well deserved. So if I had such a good time, why do I give Gurita 4 stars - the drinks are good but Boca de Ouro and Negroni (2 similar priced bars) are better..and there Guarita drops a star. We ordered the arancini, cheese plate, the fig salad, and the steak with frites. The cheese plate had all local cheeses (five different ones) and was served with walnuts and some jam; it was delicious. The fig salad was a little dry. The arancini were 4 to an order and a nice size. They were crispy on the outside and tasty in the inside. I liked the frites, maybe a little too much! I didn't try my friend's steak but she said it was good. The staff recommended a very good white wine. Tip: don't sit at the second table past the bar on the right after the wait station in the seat against the wall; there is a door that is frequently used by the staff and they will keep hitting your chair.

I was pleased to learn that it wasn't salads at all but instead, BURGERS. The cashier spoke very good English. I ordered a cheeseburger and truthfully it was top 5 burgers I've ever had. It was really good quality meat. To drink they offer a Welches style grape juice. Very good pairing to the food. You know, I think food might be more delicious, when restaurants remain humble like this. I'm happy to see they aren't branding it "best burger in the world" like I've seen elsewhere in this country, ahem, Maderos. I really don't like it when restaurants do that. Conclusion, this is a very good burger. Period.
